Chapter 5I climbed the steps to the boarding house, still trembling from what had happened on the road. Annie sat on the porch, reading her Bible. “Everything go ok at the funeral service?” she asked, without looking up. “Nah, none at all,” Jeff said, as he kissed her on the cheek. “Everybody behaved himself.” “There’s some fried onions and pork chops still warm on the stove, and the biscuits are in the warmer,” she said. We sat down to dinner and discussed the events of the day. Jeff gave me more background on some of the participants in the funeral, and added some anecdotes, or perhaps gossip, on others who attended.
