Officer Parsons arrived five minutes after the landlord called him to Joel and Sam’s apartment. He stood on the bed, gazing up at the hole with a flashlight. “I can’t see any light up there,” he said. “But you’re probably right that it goes through to the apartment above.” “I’ve got a pass key, but I didn’t want to go up there and confront the tenant without some sort of protection,” the landlord said. “Who lives up there?” Parsons asked, as he walked out the door and headed toward the stairs with the other three in his wake. “Let me see,” the landlord said. “When the apartment came up for rent a couple of months ago, I received an application and two months’ rent in cash.
