CHAPTER 8

Eleanor POV A week had passed in a blur, and I’d never felt this lonely before in my entire life. Mr. Castro was always busy with his job and only talked to me occasionally. I never saw Luciano after that night. It seems like he always came back late. I wonder the real reason for him bringing me into this house. If only I were still working in The W, I wouldn’t be miserable like this. All of a sudden, arguing with my stupid brother seemed more interesting than staying in this house the whole day doing nothing. I am done with this. I am going to ask Mr. Castro if I could go back to work. I softly knocked on the door. God, I hoped I didn’t disturb him while he was working. I am going to make this quick. “Come in” I could hear his deep voice from inside the room. I took a deep breath. You can do this, Eleanor. I came in, and to my surprise, Luciano was also there. They both turned their attention toward me. Now that I see them side by side, I can clearly see the resemblance between them. They shared the same dark brown hair and piercing green eyes. Now I suddenly forgot what I was going to say to him. “I’m sorry, Mr. Castro… I’ll be back again later,” I said. “No, Eleanor… Please come in.” Mr. Castro said, motioning to the empty chair next to Luciano. “How about your feet?” he then asked. “I’m as good as new… I could even dance right now.” I replied, making him laugh. “You’re funny, but I won’t allow you to do that. What is it that you need from me?” Mr. Castro then asked. I gulped nervously. “Ummm…Actually, I felt a bit bored.” I said, fumbling with the end of my dress. “You’re still recovering. I don’t want you to do anything that could harm your health.” He was weighing his decision for a while. “You can watch TV inside your room.” To be honest, I was sick of watching TV. I even finished watching many dramas on TV, which I’d never gotten a chance to follow before. “Can I still be working in my dad’s company?” I finally got the courage to ask. “I am afraid that’s out of the question, Eleanor. You won’t leave this house.” Mr. Castro said sternly. I got up from the chair. “Then I am sorry for wasting your time. Have a nice day, Mr. Castro.” I turn around, leaving the room with eyes full of tears. I was fully aware that he bought me from my stepfather, but I didn’t want to be kept here like a bird in a cage. ****************** Luciano POV I’ve been keeping my distance from her. But that’s not because I am a coward, no. Just as I told you before. I wanted her to make the first move. Today, to my surprise, she came to my father’s office while I was there. Her expression changed as she saw me, but I pretended as if nothing had happened. She looked beautiful with her hair braided to one side. After seeing her for the third time, I decided that I liked her bare face more, without makeup. She asked dad whether she could go back to work. Dad had told me about Eleanor. She was abused by her stepfather. And dad was somehow impressed by her. He only told me that much. It’s quite funny how she asked to be back in that hell hole. Our house is a hundred times better than working there. Women are hard to understand. Dad’s getting tense until she finally relented and walked out, sulking. I hate to see the disappointment on her face. She’s like a kid who just got her candy stolen. “There’s no way I am going to let her get beaten again,” Dad said, and I laid back in my chair. “She looked a bit sad,” I said to dad with an amused tone. “Son, there’s nothing I could do to protect her there.” He replied, lighting his cigarette. He’s always smoking every time he’s depressed. “I could go to work with her, you know.” I offered. His forehead creased in confusion. “What’s that supposed to mean?” he asked me back. “Well, basically… You own a big part of the share in that company. What if you asked your friends to make me a new CEO there?” I explained to him. He looked deep in thought. He’s weighing this crazy yet awesome idea. It would be fun to work with Eleanor. “Since when did you into office work?” Dad is starting to get suspicious of me. I didn’t want him to know yet that I had a crush on Eleanor. “You know I always liked a challenge,” I pretended to be oblivious. ***************** Eleanor POV My seven o clock alarm was ringing. I groaned and then stretched out my hand to put them off. “I have to go to work,” I said to myself. Last night, during dinner, Mr. Castro suddenly changed his mind and told me that I could go to work. I was ecstatic. My job is my life. No matter how many times my stepdad belittled me, I knew I was good at what I was doing. I put on the blazer, and I was done. I wished dad still welcomed me in his company. I did no wrong. Mr. Castro is actually a kind person. After I had my quick breakfast, a car was already waiting for me outside. And yes, I have my own personal driver s***h bodyguard now. Guess who? Curtis. I am not that surprised. He was smiling at me as soon as I stopped by the car. “Good morning, Ms. Wright.” “Good morning, Curtis,” I replied before I got into the car. As I stepped my foot into the office, I could feel a lot of eyes on me. They must be wondering where I was because I went missing for a week. I overheard some of them gossiping about the new CEO. I was surprised. I only left this place for a week, and yet dad already made such a big changes. I hoped it was not Everett. Dad would be a fool to pick him to be the company CEO. I aimed for that position my entire life. I went to dad’s office to confirm with him myself. What if I was worried for nothing? I didn’t bother to knock before I came in. Dad’s not there, and I got surprised to see Everett there instead. “Eleanor?” Certainly, he wasn’t expecting me to be showing up in this company today. I snorted mockingly at him before I went to him and then slapped him right on his cheek. “How dare you play dirty with me to get the position?” he looked taken aback. “What the hell are you talking about? What CEO? Why did you hit me?” he raised his voice at me, totally confused. I took a deep breath before I explained it to him. “I heard dad was giving his position to another person.” He frowned hard. “What? That’s not possible. I told dad that I’m not ready yet for that position.” “If it wasn’t you… then who?” The door behind me went opened, and then I saw dad. His expression was hard to read. “It’s true what they said.” Dad stepped to the side, and then Luciano strode in confidently. I couldn’t believe my own eyes. “Kids, this is the new CEO…. Mr. Luciano Castro.” Dad introduced him to us. My jaw nearly dropped to the floor. Is this some kind of joke?
