Chapter 10: A new family

Lilly had spent Saturday night staying over at her friend's Sarah's house as she usually did once a month when Jason had been away for several nights and Lilly assumed he was on one of his week-long benders and took a gamble he would be away for a few extra nights.

She loved it at Sarah's house, it wasn't a grande mansion and her parents weren't anyone exciting like movie stars or famous musicians but compared to her dirty house and her messed-up family it felt that way.  Sarah's house was an average three-bedroom council house with a small garden but it was warm, clean and safe and with family pictures hung on every wall and Sarah's family's laughter echoing throughout the house it was something Lilly had craved ever since her mum died - it was a home.

Sarah's parents didn't know Lilly's exact circumstances but she could tell they knew she was unhappy and although they never pried they were always kind towards her. Sarah's mum had talked to Lilly a few times privately and told her if Lilly ever needed to talk she was always here and would listen, Lilly often wished she was brave enough to speak out and ask Sarah's kind mum for help but she never was so just smiled at her kindly after their talks and thanked her. 

Sarah's dad was what Lilly always imaged a dad should be, he may come across as tough on first glance but whenever he was around Sarah or his wife he turned into a devoted and loving father and husband and everyone could see that his wife and daughter meant the world to him. Sarah's parents were everything Lilly wished she had in a family and Lilly felt incredibly guilty that sometimes she was jealous of her friend for having everything she didn't.

Lilly spent Saturday night having an epic girly sleepover and on Sunday afternoon just before Sarah's mum drove her home Lilly finally plucked up the courage to tell her friend that she wasn't coming to school on Monday.

" But why Lilly? I don't understand I thought you wanted to be a vet and were going to stay on to get your highers to go to Veterinarian school? " Sarah asked in shock.

" I do .. I mean I did want that but you know it's just me and my brother Sarah and my brother... works a lot to provide for us and now I am an adult I need to get a job to help out," Lilly replied trying to keep the emotion out of her voice and pretend she was doing this out of her own free will.

" I know that Lilly and I respect that but you're really smart you can be anything you want to be a lawyer, doctor or the one thing i know you really want to be a vet easily.. if it's about the money you could get a scholarship your grades are good enough and in the meantime, you could move in with us so it's less of an expense for your brother at home.. you know my mum and dad won't mind ." Sarah pleaded to try to look out for her friend.

Lilly sighed, she really wished she could tell her friend everything and accept her help but she couldn't risk it. There was no telling how her brother would react if she refused to accept one of the jobs he had chosen, his past actions had proven he could be violent when he was angry and if he found out Sarah had encouraged Lilly to say no and provided her away out of his control Lilly honestly didn't know if her brother fuelled by alcohol would hurt her friend so she did the only thing she could- pretended she was happy and it was her choice so her friend wouldn't try and save her and possibly get hurt in the process.

" That's really kind of you Sarah but .. I really want to work, I want a sense of independence and right now we need the money more than education but later on I can always go to night school or something ... but right now this is the right decision for me and it's my choice ." Lilly tried her best to sound convincing and sincere and it must have worked because after studying her for a while Sarah grabbed her in a tight embrace and told Lilly she was happy for her if it was what she wanted and she promised she would come by Lilly's work next weekend and they would hang out after work. Lilly managed to hold back the tears and put on a fake happy face and returned the hug before saying her goodbyes and going outside to the car where Sarah's mum was waiting to drive her home.

The drive home went quicker than Lilly would have liked and soon after saying goodbye and gratefully accepting the mountain of food Sarah's mum had cooked for Lilly to take home and freeze, Lilly was standing outside her house dreading going in,  as the sooner she went in the sooner tomorrow would come and Lilly would start her new life. Eventually, it started to rain heavily and Lilly was forced to go inside.

Monday morning came quickly and Lilly was woken by her alarm going off at 5.30 am, she quickly showered and dressed in a pair of black trousers a white shirt and the black apron provided and then made her way downstairs to catch the bus with the money Jason said he would give her for the first week then after that she would need to pay her own way.

Lilly arrived at the restaurant at 7 am and as she stood outside the address her brother had told her to go to she looked around confused,  her brother must have given her the wrong address as the posh-looking restaurant with its white marble walls and a large gold sign reading ' Sinclair's' was a complete opposite of what Lilly was expecting from the sleazy description her brother gave of its owner.

 As Lilly stood outside looking lost a girl slightly older than Lilly came out of the restaurant's front door carrying a daily special board. " Are you okay there? You look lost ." The girl asked smiling warmly at Lilly.

" I think I maybe ..is this 21 York place? " Lilly asked feeling foolish.

" Yes it is, I can I help you.. are you looking for someone? " The girl asked.

" Erm please, I am looking for a .. Tommy, I am meant to be starting work at his restaurant today at 8 am but I think I may have the wrong place. " Lilly said peaking past the girl and seeing the grande interior inside and staring opened mouth in awe.

The girl giggled before reaching out a hand " Ah you must be Lilly, I am Abby I have been expecting you. Yes this is Tommy's place and I know why you were confused .. you don't expect a guy like Tommy to own a place as classy as this.. truth be told he inherited it so didn't have a say in the decor or there would be zebra and leopard print everywhere and plastic cutlery no doubt ." Abby giggled again and Lilly smiled at her warmly she was so friendly it was so easy to like her.

" Tommy can be ... rough just keep your head down and don't give him a reason to notice you especially with you being young and so pretty and you should get on okay. We have a good staff here and all look out for each other .. come on let me introduce you to everyone before we set up for the opening. " 

Lilly blushed all her friends at school had told her she was exceptionally pretty but she was too shy to believe them. " Thank you that would be great ." Lilly managed to reply shyly before Abby grabbed her hand and dragged her into the restaurant excitedly.

" Everyone this is the new waitress Lilly, she'shy so be nice! " Abby introduced her to the twenty or so staff who were gathered.

" She's probably not shy Abby, you just most likely haven't shut up long enough to let the poor girl get a word in ! " a good looking boy in his early twenties teased as he winked at Lilly making her blush deepen.

" Lilly that cheeky sod is Matt he's the assistant chef here- it's rare to have an assistant chef so young but he's very talented, unfortunately however his accomplishment seems to have gone to his head and he has an ego as big as his mouth ." Abby teased in return as Matt's expression turned to one of mock hurt before he grinned sexily. He was over six feet, tanned with blonde curly hair, baby blue eyes and he looked to have a well-muscled body Lilly was embarrassed to admit she had noticed, he could have been a male model or boy band member he was so good looking.

" Ignore her Lilly my ego and mouth aren't that big. It's a pleasure to meet you.. if you need anything I am at your service ." Matt said huskily as she took her hand and kissed the back of it making Lilly's legs womble slightly before he bowed dramatically and went back to the kitchen.

" Oh and he's a terrible flirt and likes to think of himself as a ladies man so don't fall for his charm! " Abby giggled as noticed Lilly's flustered reaction.

" This is Hugo the head chef, Marie, Claire, Izzy, Regina, Sophia, Becky, Emma, Aria and Hanna they are all waitresses here, Tommy doesn't hire waiters only waitresses as he believes putting pretty girls in short uniforms brings in more customers.. he's a sexist pig but sadly he's right. " Lilly looked at the waitresses uniforms they were wearing skirts well above the knee and she noticed the shirts were tight and clung to the waitress breasts and tiny waist, she didn't feel comfortable wearing something so exposing but she knew she would have no choice.

" This is Richard, Martin, and Carlos they are the bartenders and Marcel is the general manager. "  Abby introduced Lilly to them and they all smiled warmly at her.

" And finally we have Phil, Calum, Alistair, John, and Kain, who are prep chefs and there's about ten more staff in the back who are pot washers who are really busy right now but I will introduce you later. Now that you've met everyone though welcome to the Sinclair family !! " Abby squealed excitedly as she hugged Lilly tightly and the rest of the staff joined in the hug or shook her hand and smiled again. 

" Now Lilly you're early for your shift, let me show you around the restaurant and give you your uniform then Abby can take you to the staff room and you can have tea and some breakfast before you start your first shift. Since you hit it off so well with Abby I will pair you with her to do your training will that be okay Lilly ?"  Marcel asked in an Italian accent in a friendly tone.

" Yes,  thank you so much mr.. " Lilly asked trying to find out the correct title to call him since he was the manager. 

" Marcel is fine Lilly like Abby said we are a family here Lilly. Just watch out for Tommy.. the owner he is known to be handy's with the girls, the boys and I try and watch out for you but do not give him a reason to give you any attention.. just keep your head down and we will try and protect you .. okay ." 

Lilly swallowed at the thought of her handy's boss she hadn't yet met, it admittedly put her off a little bit but she knew she only had two choices here or the strip club and this was by far the lesser of two evils.

Besides everyone at the restaurant seemed really lovely so surely she could handle Tommy, right?
