6 The open grounds of the school soon gave way to the crowded streets of the bustling city. Torches and oil lamps illuminated the many people who walked the stone sidewalks before the stone-and-clapboard buildings. Delicious smells poured out of open windows and wafted over us like pea-soup fog. Ladies of the Night stood outside some establishments showing off their wares and advertising the best drinks in the house. Several of them waved to our carriage as we passed or blew kisses at us, beckoning us to a night of pleasures. “You appear to be popular in this district, as well,” Tristan mused as he looked to our guide.
