Getting a big sister

After listening to Max's side of the story, Kalina thinks that she could finish her report as she has found out about the battle step by step. She, however, wasn’t sure of what to do about Max.

“Max, can I ask you one last question?”

“Sure, Kalina.”

“Do you have a plan on what to do in the future?”

“What do you mean?”

Max asked Kalina in confusion as he wasn’t sure the direction of her question.

“When I made my report, the United Heroes association will find out that you have a superpower. Either you do not use your power again until the rest of your life, or you tried to get your own license.”

This time, Max is surprised at Kalina’s explanation.

“But you should understand that I don’t have any money to take the hero license’s test. It is also too late for me to enter the hero school.”

“I know very well that it is impossible for you to catch up on what the other students have been learning from the hero school. I doubt there’s any student that is able to defeat two B-rank villains on their own either while their power hasn’t even reached D-rank. What I’m trying to say is that you have the potential to become a great hero, and it is a shame to let your talent goes to waste.”

Max feels very happy since this is the first time someone actually praised him. Not to mention telling him that he has the potential to be a hero. Becoming a hero is something that Max has been dreaming of since he was a small child. Although he is now saying that he doesn’t want to be a hero, it will be a lie. He still wants to be a hero, only his circumstances that don’t seem to be possible.

“Even if you said all that, I won’t be able to get my papers done and pay for the hero license’s examination.”

Kalina is now going to do something that’s out of her way. She doesn’t know why but after hearing Max’s explanation and how he feels, she just couldn’t leave him alone.

“How about I become your sponsor?”

“Sponsor?”

“Don’t you know? Sponsoring for a hero is common nowadays. Just say it is more like I’m investing my money in you. When you’re making money in the future, I will get a cut from it. There’s a lot of company that is doing that nowadays. Rather than paying an expensive fee for a famous hero, they would rather sponsor potential hero candidates and raise them to stardom. That way, they could save money and even got a cut from them.”

“Are you sure? As you know, my power can barely be considered as D-rank right now. I am not sure whether you will make a profit in the future or not?”

“Then, how about I set some requirements for you?”

“Okay, I’m all ears.”

“Firstly, the profit split that we have will be 40-60, with me taking 60%.”

To be honest, Max didn’t know about it, but he would accept it even if it is 95-5. After all, he isn’t even sure if he will make any profit or not in the future. As for himself, as long as he is sleeping under a roof and three meals a day, he is already satisfied as his current life in the orphanage is already very thrifty. Seemingly agreeing with the first terms, Max nodded at Kalina.

“Secondly, I will have you undergo a specialized training course. For you to catch up to what the other student at the United Heroes academy has learned, you have no other way.”

This second terms didn’t even seem to be disadvantageous, so Max nodded again.

“Thirdly, our contract terms will be for 30 years with the details will be explained further on the contract.”

Max didn’t understand about it and not talking about 30 years. He isn’t even sure that he will live that long, so he agreed. For Kalina, the one who made him have another realization in life and untangled his regret, he is willing to sign a contract for life.

“Fourth, you need to listen to me from now on.”

The fourth term is a bit ambiguous, but Max doesn’t think much about it and agrees.

“Lastly, call me big sister from now on.”

“Big sister?”

“Yeah, I changed my mind. Although earlier I told you that you could call my name directly, given our age differences, I believe having you call me big sister is the best. I hope you can say it from the bottom of your heart.”

“Big sister.”

Although Kalina is in her twenties, she has gone through so much in her life. Not to mention recently, her mother passed away, and she tried to brush it off with working. When she met Max today, it was as if she is being reminded of her old self, where she keeps on blaming herself. She is lucky that she still has her mother at that time, and now as she has passed away in natural death, she is feeling a little bit lonely.

Maybe, getting a little brother won’t be so bad. Of course, she doesn’t have any other ulterior motives when she is offering her help to Max. The sponsor terms are only a disguise as she purely wants to help Max. When her mother passed away, she feels confused and got through life barely every day. Maybe, she will be able to find a reason in life again by taking care of Max.

“Good, that wasn’t too awkward. So, it has been decided, right? Just take a rest here for some days, and you can go back to the orphanage. I will contact you again after you are discharged, okay?”

“Yes Ka… big sister Kalina!”

She was leaving Max behind, and Kalina heads towards another floor of the building. She entered, and she made a complete report on the battle based on Max’s words. Of course, she hid some details about Max and told the higher-ups just enough.

“So, you have decided on what to do with Max?”

“Yes, sir. I will be making a contract with him and put him under my supervision. I believe it will be for the best if he could get a license in the future, but it will depend on his determination and talent. If it were only a fluke that he succeeds in killing Bonio and Yann, we wouldn’t lose much as it is only at the cost of one hero license examination. “

“Okay, you can do it as you deem fit. After all, we have gained valuable intel from the device that they used to make an alternate space. Since the device is still intact, we might be able to reverse engineer it or find flaws and use it to our advantage later. It is already good enough.”

“I will be taking my leave then, sir.”

As Kalina leaves the room, the chair where the man she reported to slowly turned around. Revealing a figure with broccoli-style hair that seemed to be lost in thoughts.

“I couldn’t believe that this incident is related to Vanya and Lindt. After ten years, they are showing up again after blowing up the memorial monument. What do you plan this time?”
