Max's real ability

“Yes, I don’t mind talking about the incident.”

“Then, what do you want to do if you meet the villain that is causing the incident?”

“Do you mean if I meet with Lindt and Vanya?”

“How do you know about them?”

“Eh?”

Max realized that he said something that the public shouldn't know. However, he thinks quickly about it.

“I heard about it from my big sister.”

“Big sister?”

“Ah, she is more like my adoptive sister, and she acted as my guardian now. Her name is Kalina.”

“Thorn Queen Kalina?”

“Thorn Queen?”

“Yes, she is one of the candidates to be the new S-rank.”

“What? Is big sis going to be S-rank? Why she didn’t tell me anything about it?”

 “*cough* anyway, continuing on, what will you do if you meet the villain?”

“Ah, I’ve told you earlier that I don’t want to exact revenge. However, I will still try my best to defeat them and catch them. I hope that they could be punished by the law according to the bad things that they have done.”

“Don’t you hate them? Don’t you want to kill them?”

“Thinking about it, I hate them at first. However, after meeting big sis, I realized that revenge isn’t everything.”

“I’m glad that you could think about it that way. I wonder if she thinks the same about her revenge, though.”

However, the last part of Master Tenshi’s sentence is too small for Max to hear as he is mumbling to himself.

“So, why are we talking about this, Master?”

Hearing Max’s question, Master Tenshi remember that there is a more important thing to talk about.

“Max, to be honest. I think I quite understand what is this grey world that you’re talking about.”

“Really, Master Tenshi?”

“yes, but I want you to promise me one thing.”

“What is it?”

“No matter what you do, please remember that you are a hero. never use your power for anything that is harmful to people.”

“What do you mean, Master Tenshi?”

“You have an extraordinary talent that, if you use wrongly, could be a disaster. I want you to promise that you will always become a hero and help other people.”

“Of course, I can promise you that.”

Seeing the determination and sincere look on Max’s face, Master Tenshi then decided to tell Max about his ability.

“Maybe, he will be different from Lindt.” While thinking about it in his heart, Master Tenshi then starts to explain things to Max.

“Max, can you tell me. What do you think is that grey world is? And, is the white particle is the only thing that you could control?”

Hearing Master Tenshi’s question, Max starts to think.

“Honestly, I don't know what is that grey world is. But, when I saw the grey world, time suddenly went very slow. So, maybe it has something to do with concentration? I think when someone is fully focused, time could go really slow. Or, is it time-stopping ability? But if it’s time stopping, then it doesn't make sense to control the white particle.”

“How about a simpler question? What do you think your ability is?”

“That’s easy to answer. It’s wind element.”

“Are you really sure?”

“Eh? Why are you asking as if my ability isn’t wind elements? After all, you’ve seen for yourself that I am using a wind-related ability.”

“If you say so. Then, what do you think my ability is?”

“Of course, it is a water element. Eh, wait. Is it a fire element? Can you possibly use water and fire? But I never heard of something like that before.”

When Master Tenshi asked Max to guess his ability, Max feels confused. As in principle, two conflicting elements can't exist at the same time. However, when Max thinks about it closely, he has shown this sign too. When he cancels out Iki’s fire and Elica’s ice, does it mean he could use those elements too?

“My ability isn’t fire or water. This is also why I'm not too fond of the United Heroes association appraisal system. It wasn’t entirely accurate. I don’t know how many talents are lost because of it. Let me tell you something. Before we’re using an appraisal orb just like how we do it nowadays, finding out someone’s talents is more challenging, but on the other hand, there’s no one telling you that you don’t have the talent or something like that. You just haven’t found your talent yet. I think this is true. Everyone has their own unique ability, yet they lost them when they believed the association when the appraisal result say that someone doesn’t have any talent.”

If it was said previously, Max might have difficulty understanding it. However, after seeing how Kieran struggle and Master Tenshi said that the limitation comes from his mentality, Max could understand what Master Tenshi just said.

“For example, if someone has the ability to turn a leaf into a burger, well, that sounds like a useless ability for combat, but they could solve the starvation problem. More importantly, what I want to say is, that kind of ability couldn’t be detected by the appraisal orb. The moment they went to the association and got appraised, there is a 99.99% chance that they will return with an appraisal saying they don’t have any talent. When they read it and believe in it, their ability will disappear for good without even coming into existence even once in the world. Sure, finding out if someone can turn a leaf into a burger will need a long time and various trial and error. Still, I rather the person itself give up in the process of finding the power rather than from the association verdict.”

Hearing what Master Tenshi explained, Max can feel the emotion in his word. After a few moments of silence and a sigh from the older man, he continues.

“Now, can you tell me what you experienced when you get your ability appraised?”

“Ah, now that you’re talking about it, the appraisal that I got from the association is saying that I don’t have any power.”

Max isn’t answering enthusiastically since it is related to the incident where he lost his parents. Nevertheless, he could see the connection that Master Tenshi is trying to pinpoint.
