Max's way of doing mission

Getting out from the United Heroes headquarters with a heavy step, Max is about to call Kalina to complain, but she beats him one step as Kalina is calling Max’s phone before he pressed the call button.

Max is surprised, but he still picks up the call nevertheless.

“Good evening Air Hero. Have you finished your work for the day? How about we celebrate your first day of work with a great dinner? Don’t forget, after dinner; you’re still going to have your evening training as usual. Even if you have become a hero, it doesn’t mean that you could slack off from your training or else you won’t improve further.”

Hearing Kalina’s bright and cheerful voice, Max now realizes that she might doesn’t have any intention to fool Max with the mission. It might be really his fault for not recognizing the actual task that a hero should take from volunteering works.

“Alright then. Where will we eat?”

“Let’s just go to the usual place near the beauty gym. But, although it’s the usual place, we’ll order more food than usual.”

“Okay. I’ll be there in fifteen minutes.”

Arriving at the familiar restaurant, Max found Kalina sitting at the usual spot. There’re already dishes ready to be eaten on the table, and it’s all Max’s favorite food. Max sits down and converses with Kalina.

“Big sis, can you guess what happened today?”

“What? Did you manage to complete a lot of mission today?”

Hearing Kalina’s innocent question, Max couldn’t help but sigh before explaining to her about what happened today.

“Hahaha. I couldn’t believe that it happened. The receptionist must be feeling very awkward when talking to you.”

“Ugh, I rather not talk about it again. To put it in simple terms, my first day of work as a hero net me zero income.”

“Hahaha. Don’t worry about that. This one is my treat again.”

“I know that you’ll be the one paying for this one, big sis. I’m just confused about what to do. Should I find a mission from the mission board tomorrow?”

“You know, Max, the thing that you’re doing wrong today is by asking every person that you see on the street whether there’s something that you could help or not. Even if it were me, I would be accepting help from you if you ask me on the street. After all, there’s a lot of job like changing the light bulb or moving drawers and organizing my furniture.”

“If you need my help, just call me, big sis. It is something I would be glad to help, and it is not Air Hero that will be helping you but Max Air.”

“Haha. If I need your help, I will call you for sure. What you should do is something that is called ‘patrolling’ in hero’s terms. Just like the police doing their patrol, you will do the same. That way, if a disaster or an emergency happened nearby, you could be the first person to help as a hero. Or, when you’re walking around, noticing your costume, there will be people who come up to you and ask you to help them with more serious things, unlike picking up trash in the park. I didn’t say that picking up trash is a bad job. At least, what you did today could help boost your popularity with the people.”

“So, what should I do is just roaming the streets or doing patrol until someone asked for my help?”

“Yes. That is correct. Or you could still ask around for anyone that needed your help. Although what you’re doing today might seem useless, it is good to start building your reputation early. If not, you will end up like me, an A-rank hero that remains obscure and unpopular.”

Max knows that the real reason that Kalina isn’t popular or well known even though she has an A-rank hero license is that she doesn’t even want to become famous. If not, she wouldn’t take the post as a teacher at the United Heroes school.

“Alright, let’s stop talking about that for now. Let’s eat before the food starting to get cold.”

Eating all the good food that Kalina has prepared for him, Max can feel his sour mood turned for the better.

“You know, Max. Whether you are patrolling the streets, finding a mission from the mission board, or just like today volunteering to help people, nobody can stop what you wanted to do. Just do what makes you happy. As for earning money, you don’t have to think about that. You won’t be able to earn a lot from commercials and others since you’re only a newcomer hero. Unless an advertisement contract comes, usually D-rank hero earns their money from clearing mission but once again, a good mission that pays a lot is very rare.”

Max also asked around about the mission that is available on the mission board when he is in the United Heroes headquarters, and surprisingly although the mission pays a lot, ranging from $1,000 to $10,000, he doubted that he could get rich as the $10,000 rewards mission is a hot item that usually gone a few second after it was posted.

For C-rank, each mission reward increased to a minimum of $30,000 until $100,000 at the top. It is scary to imagine that starting from B-rank, this number further improved, and at A-rank, a mission can easily net millions to the heroes.

Of course, it is to say that the difficulty and risk also increased the higher you go, but that was to be expected. Not to mention that Max’s dream of becoming a hero is not to become a millionaire or a billionaire.

“Okay, since we’re done eating, let’s go to the gym and practice as usual. Even though you have gotten your license, you’re still far from the top of becoming an A-rank or even S-rank. You should never skimp on training since hard work won’t betray you.”

“Big sis, thank you for the treat. Moreover, I have made my decision. Tomorrow, I will be patrolling the street plus volunteering to help people. Although the association couldn’t recognize it as a mission, the smile on the people’s faces that I saw today is real, and that is also why I want to become a hero.
