When Cassy so suddenly left to find them “drinks”, Amy felt a moment of fear, bile rising in her throat, quickly replaced by relief when she saw Emily, another university friend.
“Hey! Wow! This is barely the type of place I thought to see you!”
“You know Cassy. When she puts her mind to something, there’s just no stopping her.”
Smiling and chatting the girls made their way over to a table with some barstools in the middle of the floor. “And typically Cassy, she disappeared as soon as you came in, right?”
“You guessed it! Hmmm, but she has been gone for some time now. I wonder where she went?”
“You know Cassy. If she meets someone she ‘kinda knows’ along the way, she could be gone for HOURS!”
“Lol, don’t I know it! But I love her despite her absentmindedness. She keeps me grounded you know?”
“Listen, Amy, why don’t you have a seat and I’ll be right back with some drinks? O and would you mind if I asked my boyfriend to join us? I don’t think you’ve met Zac before.”
“Sure. I’m not going anywhere, at least not at the moment.”
Alone once more, Amelia let her mind wonder. She was worried about her mum. The last bout of chemo hadn’t gone to well, and she was up for another round in just a few days. It was their absolute last resort. Her doctor had tried every other known method, but surgery had failed, and her body just didn’t seem to react well to the other types of treatments they had tried. Even the previous chemo treatments had been a failure, so they had to use something stronger this time. But she was sick, and her frail body couldn’t handle much more, unless off course Amy could win a million bucks and take her overseas for some specialized treatment. Apparently there was a doctor in America that worked with cases like her mum’s.
Lost in thought, a sigh escaped her. She jerked upright when a shadow suddenly filled her view and a greasy hand travelled down her back, too low for comfort.
“Now what is a sweet, thing like ya, doing all alone without even a drink! What say ya, having myself buy ya one instead a las?”
Cringing away from the touch and breath so close to her face, Amy stammered “Erm, no, no thanks. I’m not alone actually, my friend will be back soon.”
“Ya sure? Ya sure are gorgeous ya know? Shouldn’t wear such short dresses if ya don’t like company? Shouldn’t be alone too ya know.”
“I believe that the lady said no!” The voice was low, almost feral, but it felt so load to Amelia that she had to double check that no one else had heard and the security wasn’t storming towards them yet.
“And who are you?!”
“Someone taking care of her. Now go.”
“She said nothing about no boyfriend. So who are you to tell me to go?”
“Erm, Amy, is there a problem?”
Amy had rarely in her life been so relieved to see someone. Jumping of the bar stool, she almost ran to where not only Emily, but Cassy and two other unknown men stood.
“As you can see, the lady is spoken for. Now Miss, I hope you enjoy your evening, and in the meantime, I will escort our friend here for some fresh air.” With an old time, gentlemen like head bob to her, the gentleman took a strong hold on the greasy one’s arm, before forcefully removing him from his unwanted seat.
“What in the world happened?!” Both Cassy and Emily’s faces where filled with shock while Amy described first the scary situation with the greasy stranger and then the even stranger encounter with the other unknown gentleman.
Cassy lead the group off to a small, more obscured, nook with seats, where the girls fell too introducing the men. In typical Cassy fashion however, she downed her drink in one go before grabbing her newfound partner’s hand to lead him to the dance floor.
A strange feeling of being watched crept over Amy, but not wanting to spoil the fun, when a concerned Emily asked if she was okay, Amelia encouraged her to go dance. Thus leaving her alone once again. Watching Cassy twerking and grinding against the new partner (apparently his name was Anthony?), had her shaking her head. Typical Cassy, not a care in the world of what others might think. When Cassy however, dropped him like a bomb in the middle of the floor, to suddenly grab another boy in for a kiss, Amy could only laugh and shake her head. Cassy certainly knew no bounds!
This time when a strange voice sounded in her ear, it didn’t bring that same feeling of fear, but rather one of excitement and even a thrill of something more, running up her spine.
“Of all the places to meet you again! After all these years. Amelia?”
Turning her head to look at the newcomer, Amy found herself at a loss for words. Staring at the blue-est blue eyes that she had ever seen, eyes that could only belong to one person, combined with a shock wave of dark black hair. She KNEW those eyes, even if the facial features had changed over the years. Struggling to find her tongue and voice, she stumbled over the word, “E...E... Ethan?”
