I froze in my tracks.
My heart skipped a beat and I turned abruptly toward the girls. I stared at them with wide eyes as my chest began to rise and fall heavily.
"Did you hear that?" I asked.
They stared back at me with confusion on their faces. "Hear what?" Nala asked.
I blinked multiple times. Had I imagined it? I exhaled sharply. "Never mind," I muttered.
Then I turned back to face the road. The mission was to get to the exit. I needed to stop getting distracted. I was probably overthinking it too much.
