Kayla's Point Of View
"Oh come on," I screamed as I tried to move the heavy metaled thing from the yard. I kept losing my grip on the object and when I had a grip on it and began to pull I was lucky to move it a few inches before my hands slipped. I was making zero progress.
"Some would say your crazy for talking to inadmate objects," I heard a male voice say from behind me.
I quickly turned around and saw council member Dravin standing behind me.
"Council member. I was not expecting you," I said as I looked down and gasped. My clothes were a mess and I could not imagine what my hair looked like. I had fallen into the dirt several times throughout the morning and I had dirt stains all over me and God knew what else.
"I do like to show up unannounced at times," he said. I quickly glanced up and he smiled on his face and just as quickly as I looked up, I looked down.
"What do I owe the pleasure?"
"I have come to check on your progress but I see that you have hardly made any. The house is still falling apart and the yard is a mess."
"I have been trying," I said as I looked at the yard and felt my heart drop. I have been trying for days to clear it but I've hardly made any progress on the larger items. The smaller ones have been cleared but the bigger items I could not move on my own.
"Have you not asked for help?" He asked with a flat tone.
"I have but no one will help me."
"And why not?"
"They see me as cursed. None of the builders will come and fix the house up or help me clear the yard. The stores in town will not sell to me and when my family asks for help on behalf of me they are given given flat no. The town has even shunned them if they associate with me."
"I see," he said but I doubt he did. My brother and mother had not come in days and the little food I had ran out yesterday. I was hungry and my body was starting to feel weak but I could not let him see that.
"I am doing my best," I whispered.
"You must understand the council gave you this land to farm and if you can not produce you will be made an example of."
I knew what he meant and my heart fell. Those who did not contribute to the dragon dens would be killed and I did not want to die in the center of town by the hands of dragons. It was rare but the last time they made an example of someone was an elderly man when I was ten. His lands were not producing and because of that he was burnt to a crisp infront of everyone. I did not want that to happen.
"I understand. Is there anyways the council would allow me one season to get things in order and in the mean time I work at the dragons den as a maid?" I asked. Perhaps if I offered my services else where they would prolong my death. Council member Dravin did not say anything for several moments and I looked up at him. His eyes had gone cloudy and suddenly they were back to the golden slits. He smiled as I looked away.
"The council has agreed to this. You have one year to clear the land and start your crop. You will report tomorrow morning to the dragon den. I will meet you at the human entrance and go over your duties. Kayla I expect results and if I do not have them you will die at my hands," he said with a serious tone.
"Thank you councilman and will try my best."
Just then my stomach began to growl and I felt my face heat up. "Do not forget to eat."
"I will not."
"See you tomorrow." I looked up and he was walking away while whistling. Suddenly he transformed into a giant black dragon and took to the skies.
"Must be nice," I whispered into the air.
My stomach began to growl more and I place my hand on it. Hopefully my mom would show up today because the forest hardly had any editable food in it around me. Ignoring the loud sounds of my belly began to work on removing this metal thing.
No one else showed that day and as the sun set I let the tears fall. I was exhausted and hungry. I had never gone to bed without food or felt this way before but this was my new life. Hopefully on the way to the den I could pick some food for the day without being caught. As I laid my head down on the make shift bed I had I closed my eyes and ignored my stomach.
I slept like crap and when the sun started to rise I decided to go to the stream nearby and wash up. My body was disgusting because the moment it hit the water it began to turn black. I wish had soap to help clean me but that was now a luxury. After my morning wash down I got dressed and began to make my way to the den. I passed several fruit trees and grabbed several fruits. I began to eat them as I walked and smiled when my stomach stopped reminding me it was hungry.
As I walked people avoided me but I kept a smile on my face because I had one year to try and live and even if I failed I would die trying.
Council member Dravin was standing at the human entrance with an annoyed look on his face as he waited for me.
"Good morning," I said as I approached.
"We must hurry," he said.
"Okay."
He led me into the den and down a long dark hallway. He was walking fast and tried to keep up but ended up having to jog. He opened a door and ushered me into it.
"This is the head maid of the den. You will report to her each morning for your assignment."
"Thank you council member Dravin."
He grunted and walked away.
"My name is Grace and you will be assisting me with the princes chambers. This will become your permanent placement if you pass all the testing."
"Testing?" I asked
"You must clean his chambers the way he liked and your scent must not bother him. So far none of my girls have been able to please the prince. He hates humans.hopefully your scent is not pungent."
I nodded and she began to walk.
We entered the princes chambers and I gasped. The room was larger then my tiny home and so beautiful. I felt unworthy of being in the room but I could not stop looking around.
Grace began to talk about my duties and I carefully listened and when she was done she walked away. I began to make the princes bed when I heard a man talk from behind me.
"Who the hell are you?"
I turned around and there was a gorgeous man standing behind me. "I am Kayla," I whispered. His eyes turned from gold to purple and I quickly looked away. He walked towards me and grabbed my chin forcing me to look at him.
"Intresting," he said as he smiled and then quickly let me go. "You may continue."
