Floods are the most frequent type of natural disaster and occur when an overflow of water submerges land that is usually dry. Floods are often caused by heavy rainfall, rapid snowmelt or a storm surge from a tropical cyclone or tsunami in coastal areas. What causes flood ? • Heavy rainfall resulting from tropical weather disturbances. • Deforestation. • Improper agricultural practices. • Inadequate design of drainage channels and structures. • Inadequate maintenance of drainage facilities, blockage by debris brought by flood waters. • Construction of settlements in flood plains. 1.Our pearl city tuticorin Thoothukudi is traditionally known for its pearl fishery and shipbuilding. It is one of the oldest seaports in the world. This seaport came under Pandyan Kingdom then followed by Karkoi, Portuguese, Dutch and at last in the hands of British Government in the year 1825. Thoothukudi became the centre of Indian Independence movement in the early 20th century. The lighthouse built in the year 1842 marked the beginning the history of Thoothukudi harbour development. 2. Natural disaster flood destroyed my pearl city While the Thoothukudi district Collectorate sustained a lot of damage due to the water that flowed inside the premises, many government offices in rural areas that were operating out of buildings in low-lying areas lost all the records that they had maintained and stored. Farmers say the compensation was not commensurate with their loss. The damage to the infrastructure was very severe. 3.Heavy rainfall in Thoothukudi causes severe damage to salt stock worth ₹100 crore Nearly 6 lakh tonnes of salt ₹100 crore worth has been washed away in the coastal district of Thoothukudi due to the unprecedent rainfall witnessed on December 17 and 18. The salt were ready to be despatched to various clients in India and abroad. The natural calamity had horrific damage to lives and properties right from Kanyakumari to Vaalinokkam in southern Tamil Nadu. Such a devastation had not happened in the last century, said salt manufacturers. 4. Flood came into my street Before flood came into my street at around midnight me , my husband ,my children, my mother -in -law & my father -in -law are sleeping but before we go to sleep we kept safe our ornaments, certificate, and other important things but we all are thought that flood not came to our street may be flows through other sea side areas. But we have little fear in mind , if flood will come to our street what will we do ; where will we go ; before flood my mother and my sister -in-law said, please came to our home but we thought flood will not come , we saw nextday , how the situation is ! Then we will decide. But Thoughts are different but what happened is different. When me and my husband sleeping in our room at around 3 ‘o’ clock my husband phone was ringing I thought who call this time I wake up my husband and give his phone to him . call is cuted but again my husband call and spoke with him. My husband aunt ‘s son said , flood came near our street so please come fast to stay in our house loft. Then my husband wake up my father -in -law, my mother -in-law and my husband said, aunt ‘s son is calling me and told flood came across our street so please come fast we all stay in his house loft. Then my husband said to me switch on the light then he saw flood water come to house veranda , we also saw it our street is fully surrounded by flood water we all are so much confused and worried how to go outside house. 5. People died by the flood Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena said seven people died in the Tirunelveli district and three in the Thoothukudi district. Three of these people died due to wall collapse, four died due to drowning, two due to electrocution, and one is likely to be a natural death. when we walked into flood water at midnight we see many people are drowned in flood infront of our eyes we are unable to rescue them. Two people died in rain-related incidents on Wednesday in the Thoothukudi district, which is one of the four southern districts of Tamil Nadu that have been hit by the heavy rain in the past three days. "Two people died during floods in Navalakshmipuram village of Thoothukudi district. According to data given by the disaster management department, over 7,417 houses have been damaged, 1.07 lakh cattle killed, and 2.24 lakh acres of crops devastated due to the floods on December 17 and 18. The enumeration of damages to life and material is ongoing. More than 22 people have been declared dead due to the floods and five more bodies have been recovered in a decomposed state. farmers are keeping their fingers crossed as they lost the crops just a few weeks before the harvest of paddy and minor millet crops. The banana plantation, which is a cash crop, has been extensively damaged owing to the heavy downpour.Though we are looking for poramboke lands to accommodating people who have lost their houses, it is difficult to implement it as damaged houses are scattered and in different pockets. They cannot be forced to live far from their settlement," he added. 6. Our compound wall is drowned into the flood Then we go outside the house we walked into flood water . First my husband and my father -in -law go outside from the house. my husband carrying our baby on his back; he also carrying a college bag in his shoulder , then he struggle to walk in flood water. After few seconds, Me and my mother -in -law close the house main door and walk into flood water. It ‘s raining , time is early morning 4:30 temple bell is ringing. Me and my mother -in -law feel so struggled to walk in flood water , my husband and my father -in -law go front of us everywhere flood water finally we reached main road petrol bulk but we do not have shelter to go ; we are so much worried where to go at that time by the god grace my husband uncle call me and said go to my office that look like home it has sufficient rooms ; then my father -in -law said ok we will go to my husband ‘s uncle home. We decide how to go but there is no auto but my husband student ‘s father help me. Then, we will reach my husband ‘s uncle office it look like small home there is one hall, one study room , one kitchen , one living room that’s it . We never forget his help we will be always grateful to him till our eternal life. Next day our neighbour call my husband and said your house compound wall is drowning . 7.Money is there but unable to bought any thing My husband’s bike is drowning in the flood so he take my father -in -law bicycle to brought breakfast for us. But no shops will be opened everywhere flood water my husband searching for every shop to bought breakfast no shop will open then he ride the bicycle and then he came to 8th street and bought idly for us .No shop is opened my husband and my father -in-law struggle to brought a food . 8.water scarcity I return to my husband house after mother's house . Flood water is completely drained but plumber said he cannot repair the motor . He said next week he will surely went to house and fit the motor. Without motor , we are so much suffer we can go to our neighbour house and take water for our necessity . After 2 weeks , plumber came and fit the motor then will be we feel everything alright now.·
