Adaline pov
I woke up at five in the morning and quickly got dressed, gathering all my work and the makeup work I completed for my classes and the other wolves who told me to, making sure I had Alpha Tate’s work as well, then rushed downstairs. I was dismayed to see that they destroyed everything again, so I still should have woken up at four after all. I rushed to get it clean along with cooking breakfast and somehow had it finished by the time my mother woke up. She walked into the kitchen and glared at me, staring at everything with her arms crossed, inspecting everything.
I stood by the door with my things hoping she’ll be nice and just let me go. She pointed at something on the counter just as I got a text message. “Who is that that it’s so important to be texting this early in the morning.” She growled at me in frustration. She hated Lyell and his mother, especially even more so now that she humiliated my parents in front of the other warriors when I was sick. She grabbed the phone out of my hand and read through my text, glaring down at it. “You are dismissed. Get this done immediately. I don’t want any more rumors about my family floating around because you were incompetent and got sick.” She snarled with a growl.
I felt Aria bristle and had to take a few deep breaths to calm her down. I didn’t understand her anger, she’s omega too she should lower her eyes and do what she’s told just as much as I should. ‘We are NOT Omega.’ She snarled in my head. I nodded at my mother and took my phone back, noticing it was from Beta Alarick and ran out the door.
‘What do you mean we’re not Omega? You can’t just change our title just because you don’t like it. Trust me I would have done that a long time ago If it was possible.’ I argued with her in frustration. She never replied, and I felt her emotions as if she was pouting. I giggled at her as I walked through the gate to Lyell’s backyard where he was once again training.
“I have to leave, I can’t train this morning. Beta Alarick is requesting I pick up a special coffee and breakfast he ordered at the café and then I have to pick up a lunch that is being delivered to the school for him.” I frowned, I loved training but I didn’t have a car and it would take a while to get to the cafe and then to school.
Lyell perked up, grinning at me. “No, it’s okay to train with me and mom can just stop by the cafe on the way to school. Then I can help you deliver it to him cause it’ll be oh so heavy for your delicate tiny Omega body!” He said with a giggle as he batted his eyelashes at me.
I laughed, dropping my stuff and getting into the training stance with him. “You are too much sometimes lover boy.” I told him as I followed his motions. He grinned at me, looking like a little kid, making me notice he cut his bangs to just above his eyes again.
“I know but you love me.” He yelled at me as he brought his knee up and thrust his leg out into a kick. I copied him, rolling my eyes. Of course, I love that dork. I could feel Aria laughing at him as well.
‘Not our mate, but I still love him. He’s adorable in his way. I will gladly take care of him.’ She whispered in my head. I laughed at her.
‘What are you talking about? We can’t take care of him he is much stronger than us! He’d be taking care of us.’ She didn’t answer, but I could feel the smile on her wolf muzzle all the same. I frowned, wishing she wasn’t so secretive. There seemed to be something she wasn’t telling me. ‘Soon little one. Soon you will know.’ I shook my head, pushing her back so I can concentrate on training.
We finished faster than usual and drove to the coffee shop. Lyell got coffees for me and him so we needed a tray to make it seem like he did need to help me.
We headed over to the conference room where Alarick told me to meet him and knocked on the door. “Come in,” Alarick muttered. “It’s just a conference room you don’t need to knock...” he started to complain to me, then stopped talking as he looked over at us. A blush formed on his cheeks and he coughed, looking down at his feet. I blushed as well, I wasn’t expecting this reaction from him when I walk in the door. I could feel Lyell’s anger coming off him in waves and I gasped, tears forming in my eyes. Suddenly I was angry also. How dare he look at me and blush, I wasn’t interested in him in the least and he certainly wasn’t allowed to be interested in me. His parents were just as strict as Alpha Titus, they’d never be okay with him liking an Omega. Lyell stormed past me and slammed the coffees down on the table. He refused to look at Alarick who was still studying his feet nervously. Lyell looked up at him and frowned and I could see tears starting to make his eyes shine. I felt heartbroken for him and swallowed my forming tears away. Lyell grabbed his coffee and bowed sharply at him.
“I was just helping out my best friend. Sorry to intrude, it won’t happen again.” He said with daggers in his eyes. He started to turn away and Alarick yanked his head up so fast it was as if his head was on a spring.
“No...” he said with a weakened voice, having to pause and clear his throat. “No, it doesn’t bother me, Lyell. You can help her out whenever you want to. Sometimes I might need to have her do heavy things and I’d be happy to know you’re helping her, so she doesn’t drop or break them of course.” He finished. The blush was gone and he was staring Lyell deeply in the eyes. Lyell on the other hand was blushing from the attention and trying to fight between heartbreak and happiness. Resigned he nodded towards him and turned around again. He stopped next to me and stared at me, his eyes shining again.
“No matter what, you’ll always be my best friend and I’ll always love you girlfriend.” He whispered, leaning down and kissing my cheek. I whimpered, trying to hold back tears once more.
We both jumped when Alarick growled, his eyes flashing daggers. “Girlfriend?” He managed to choke out at us.
“Just friends Beta Alarick. Nothing to worry about. Just best friends.” Lyell said with resignation, knowing Alarick was wanting to know because of his obvious feelings for me.
“Good. It better stay just friends.” He growled out again. I looked at him under my eyelashes, noticing the blush was back and he was looking mildly happy to know we weren’t together. We both nodded and Lyell ran out of the room. I heard a sob forming as he shut the door and I had to hold back my own as I faced Alarick. I still had to be his omega I wasn’t allowed to be upset.
He looked back and forth from me to the door rapidly with a growing frown on his face and opened his mouth, ready to say something when the door opened and Gamma Kurt came in. He sighed, shaking his head and taking the bag of breakfast from me.
“What’s up, little brother? Oooh, you got breakfast? I should have also. I didn’t think about it. Give me your extra coffee.” He said with a smile as he grabbed it and started to drink it. Alarick went to stop him and then shrugged, not seeming to care that it was in fact for me. He shrugged, handing me five dollar bill for the coffee.
“I didn’t pay for it Beta Alarick, Lyell did.” I whispered. He still shoved the money into my hand insisting I give it to him. I frowned but accepted it.
“Did you know that Tate left last night? He won’t be back for another week, something about how he had to go look at the wreckage of the dead pack and help them gather what they can. Took a bunch of warriors and elite with him. Guess it makes sense they need the materials for all the new houses they have to build now.” Kurt said with a shrug.
Alarick nodded at him, clearly not caring. “You’re dismissed.” He muttered to me. I nodded and left, noticing the bell had rung five minutes ago and I was now late.
The first teacher I had wasn’t a wolf but the teachers must have been informed that I was now Alarick’s omega, or they’d tell the humans I was his family’s servant, so I was expected some leeway regarding my need to come and go based off of what he needed from me. They considered Tate, Alarick, and Kurt to be from the richest families in the town next door, the one we live in, and they accept that they are in charge of the students that come from our town. It might have seemed strange If it wasn’t the way it has been handled all our lives from before Alpha Titus was alive even. Our pack has been living here for a very long time, many generations down the line.
Still, the teacher glared at me as I came in quietly and sat down at a desk in the back. She hammered me with question after question, then became bored of me when I knew all the answers and moved on to bully someone else. I looked through my papers and gathered everything for her class along with the work that belonged to Tate that I had finished and turned it into her at the end of class. She frowned at it, clearly noticing my handwriting on his papers, but shook her head and shrugged. She was not allowed to question anything regarding the three boys, none of them were, or the principal would have them fired and replaced with a wolf in a matter of a day.
Throughout the rest of the day, I turned in Tate’s papers along with the other wolves who had me do their work. Once it was lunchtime I greeted the service Alarick used to get his lunch and stood outside the conference room with the girl who is now Kurt’s omega and waited. I didn’t see Lindsey anywhere, either Tate gave her a break since he was gone currently or he made her skip classes as well and come with him.
The doors were opened and we walked inside slowly. Kurt was busying himself with a game on his phone and Alarick was craning his head to look at us, but trying hard not to let Kurt notice. I blushed, trying to keep my eyes down. Kurt’s omega glanced back and forth between me and Alarick with a frown, causing him to stop trying to look at us and stare down at his feet with a glare.
“It’s just you two then?” He asked with a sigh. I frowned, not understanding what he was asking.
“Yes Beta Alarick, Lindsey has gone with Alpha Tate, she told me last night when she was packing.” Kurt’s omega answered him with a little flirty huff to her voice.
Kurt looked up and glared at her. “Know you’re place Omega. Don’t even think to try and flirt with one of us.” She blushed, opening her mouth but decided to shut it and stare at her feet instead. Alarick opened his mouth as if to say something else but thought better of it and shook his head with a sigh.
“The food, please, Adaline.” Alarick said softly to me with a smile. I blushed again and nodded, trying to ignore the look of anger from Kurt’s omega and the puzzled expression Kurt was giving me. Quickly we opened their food and set it up for them, then backed away waiting for further instructions.
“You’re both dismissed. Brother, a word?” Kurt said, looking back and forth from me to Alarick. He nodded, sighing, and waved his hands at me towards the door.
We both left the room and shut the door behind us. Before I could do anything else, Kurt’s omega slammed me against the wall next to the closed door. I flinched, feeling Aria bristling in annoyance. “What is it with you? You’re not that pretty you know! I’ve been in love with him since he picked me as his omega in middle school! But you come out of nowhere and spill Gamma Kurt’s drink and now I’m stuck with his abusive ways while you get MY Beta! And on top of it, he’s never looked at me or talked to me like that! Are you secretly a witch?” She yelled out in frustration in my face.
I was glad the conference room was soundproof, or else they’d be able to hear us. I didn’t want her to get in trouble for this, it’s not her fault she loves someone who doesn’t love her. I just couldn’t understand why Alarick was showing me so much attention. He never seemed to notice me before. It was only recently when Lyell started to share a locker with me that I started seeing him stare at me.
I clenched my mouth shut, trying my best to keep calm. Aria was howling in my head. I wasn’t able to transform into her until the first full moon after my birthday, but she was determined to hurt this girl. I felt my nails lengthen and the girl shrieked. “You cut me!”
“Get off of me I can’t control my wolf I’m new to having one and she’s so angry with you.” I growled out at her. She flinched, backing away slowly.
“I didn’t know you were eighteen.” She said with wide eyes.
“I turned eighteen yesterday. But that still shouldn’t be a reason to attack an innocent person. I’m sorry he seems to have feelings for me, I don’t know how or why, and I certainly never flirted with him or tried anything in the least. My best friend is in love with Alarick too and I’ve already got to deal with his heartbreak, I’m sorry if I hurt you but it wasn’t my intention.” I groaned out through clenched teeth. My wolf was banging around in my head, calling me weak for apologizing to the girl who attacked me.
“I understand. I’m sorry I was mean. It’s just so frustrating, loving someone who will never love you. I won’t accept you with him, I don’t care if he is the one pursuing you. It’s just not fair.” She said with a glare. She stomped away, leaving me standing there against the wall breathing heavily trying to calm my wolf. I sighed, heading over to the library to finish my free period before lunch.
Right before the bell rang Lyell walked into the library. I could see his puffy red eyes and I felt heartbroken all over again for him. “Lyell, I don’t know what’s going on, I’ve never looked at him with any interest I have no idea why he’d look at me like that, please, believe me, I would never even consider him for me, not with how much you love him.” I whimpered out, tears forming in my eyes.
He sighed, smiling at me in that sad way that let me know it was forced. He shuffled his feet and ruffled his hair. “It’s not your fault Adaline. You’re gorgeous, any straight man would fall in love with you. I always thought maybe I had a chance cause he never seemed to like any of the girls he dated, it made it seem like he only had them to keep his strict parents happy, and I secretly started to fantasize that it was because he was secretly gay and I could make him love me. But that’d never happen. He’s straight. And I knew it, he said he wasn’t gay right next to us the other day. But I still stupidly had my hopes up. It’s my fault I’m feeling this way, not your fault. And if you wanted to be with him, if you wanted to feel about him that way, I’d understand. You’d always be my best friend, no matter what.”
Tears flooded my eyes, made more intense by Aria’s tears as well. I fell to my knees from the onslaught of emotions. “Aria, calm down it’s overwhelming me.” I whimpered. Lyell chuckled and got down on his knees as well, pulling me into his arms. We rocked each other until the tears were gone. Finally, we stood up and chuckled at the ridiculous splotchy red look on our faces.
‘Tell him I said we're not interested in Alarick anyway because he’s not our mate.’ Aria sniffed into the air. I relayed her message with a laugh.
“Ma’am, you can’t just snuff out Beta Alarick that easily. His birthday is the same day as mine, a month from now. You won’t know he’s not your mate until he’s eighteen as well.” He said in exasperation.
‘I don’t care. If he is I reject him. The moon goddess will bless us with another.’ She huffed in annoyance. I laughed, telling him what she said.
“Aria loves you too, she says she’ll reject our mate if he is our mate, Lyell. All she ever talks about is who our mate is. She was so disappointed we didn’t smell anyone when we came to school this morning. She’s been trying to tempt me to go over to the college and then to the warrior grounds to see if any of the older ones are our mate.” I said, trying unsuccessfully to hold back a laugh. Aria stuck her nose up in the air and I giggled at her.
Lyell hugged me tightly. “I love you too Aria. Both of my girls. Very much so.” I grinned, feeling Aria smiling brightly as well.
“Mom gave me this. She wants you to eat her lunches from now on.” He said once he finished hugging me. I beamed at him, I loved his mom so much.
“If neither of us finds a mate by the time we’re thirty can I marry you so your mom will be my mom?” I begged him not for the first time. He chuckled, rubbing my head like I was a little kid even though I was older than him.
“We already had this talk. That would be very awkward since I’m not attracted to your body parts and you’d have to be forced with me bringing over all my many male lovers.” I chuckled, shaking my head in exasperation at him. The bell rang and he handed me the lunch, kissing my cheek and waving goodbye.
