Tate pov
It was a fairly uneventful event, to say the least. I was made to have my black hair slicked back and a black suit with a light blue shirt made to have my hazel eyes pop out. I was already exhausted and the event just started. Of course, I’d be the only one who wasn’t excited, there were multiples of women congregating around me hoping for a chance to make the mate bond activate.
Father was walking around with his enormous stature glaring at everyone in the way he always did. It was made to make him look intimidating but I knew that was just how his face always looked.
I was getting annoyed by the women rubbing up against me and trying my best to calm my wolf from trying to come out and snap at people. ‘Why must these ugly women be so frustrating?’ Dameon, my wolf, whined in my head.
I chuckled to myself. ‘Now don’t be rude Dameon. They aren’t ugly, they just aren’t important to me.’ I shoved off a particularly determined girl who tried to kiss my face and growled at her, making her whimper and run away.
‘Of course. Only our mate will be important, whenever we find her.’ I rolled my eyes at him.
‘I’m tired of your constant mate this and mate that. You know what my father wants. I will be marrying Sevra and just her whether I find my mate or not. If I do I’ll just reject her.’ I said.
I felt him bristle. ‘Then you will make us weak! Just because your mother was double-crossed and killed didn’t mean she was weak. And that certainly doesn’t mean our mate will be weak even if they are an omega or even a human for that matter! We are meant for someone and they are meant for us. If we reject them just to please your father we will become weakened.’
‘Then what would you have me do?’ I yelled In my head in frustration, slamming my fist into a table and making a few girls run away startled. ‘Father approves of the marriage. I have to marry Sevra. And I haven’t found my mate yet after two years of being of age, I’m probably not going to find her. It’s pointless! And I will not allow myself to bring down the pack because of a foolish mate and my foolish heart. I won’t be blindsided like father was. And that’s final Dameon!’ I roared at him.
I looked around and realized whilst I was having an internal argument with my wolf I was radiating immensely bad energy and the girls were surrounding me with an uneasy look on their face, too scared to approach but still wanting to see if they were my mate. How stupid, if they were I would have known just being in the same room as them. Touching and rubbing up against me wasn’t even needed. I growled at them and glared under my eyelashes making them scatter.
“Just a real lady killer, huh alpha.” I turned around to see Kurt chuckling at me. He had a lady on each arm and one behind him with her hand on his back. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at his womanizing ways.
“Says the one who is engaged and it will be announced in an hour or so.” I whispered, making him widen his eyes. He quickly excused himself, pushing the ladies into a back room, probably to have one last time with them before the announcement.
“Don’t mind him. You know how he is.” I turned away from Kurt’s retreating and stared into Alarick’s fierce glare. He had a fairly stunning woman in the crook of his arm but she looked bored, and I could see she was straining to see Kurt before he finished retreating away. “You can go to him after the party, I just need a date to keep my mother happy.” He growled at her. She whimpered, straightening up, and nodded her head.
I chuckled at him, patting him on the back. “One day you’ll find the one who keeps your attention.” I whispered. I noticed he was looking off to the side, at a lone figure who just walked into the room, with a look of pain and frustration etched on his face. “Unless you already have and that’s why none other will do. Just because it seems off-limits to some, doesn’t make it true. In the end, I’m your alpha, and I swear to you whatever you want is acceptable. I don’t care what your parents think. You’ll always be my beta, and you’ll always be my best friend.”
Alarick looked over at me, staring me down as he searched my eyes for any lies. Finally, he nodded, straightening up and walking away, half dragging the poor girl behind him. I sighed, watching as he retreated to his mother’s side. Maybe one day he will step up as be his own person.
‘Maybe you will too. Instead of following in your father's footprints to accept a woman who isn’t your mate stupidly just because you’re afraid of the past happening again.’ I growled, cutting off the mind link with Dameon at once.
How dare he question me, how dare he think of me as a fool. I had the whole pack to look after, especially now that the dead pack merged with us. Most of the ones who got away from the attack were my age, and because of it my pack practically doubled overnight. Even now some of them weren’t able to be here for the announcement because they had to build new houses.
I spent the rest of the next two hours glaring at stupid girls and trying to avoid Sevra’s calculating gaze. The more time I spent with her the more I disliked her, but I couldn’t deny her beauty. She had her short red hair braided back elegantly and a long ball gown backless dress hugging her curves nicely. Every time she felt me looking she gave me a hungry smile making me shiver inside. It strangely made me feel like she wanted to eat me alive and become sole alpha herself as if that could ever happen.
Finally, my father stepped forward, clicking his spoon on his glass and clearing his throat. Swiftly I made my way to the top of the stairs with him, looking down on all of our pack as they quieted down and waited for the speech.
“First things first. We are all so very excited to celebrate alpha Tate’s twentieth birthday together. Thank you all for attending.” He boomed. Everyone clapped politely and I had to hide a snicker. As if they had a choice, unless they were dismissed for working on the new houses, or the rare few guarding the property lines, then everyone was forced to be here unless they were sick or too old and unable. “I have an announcement to make as well.” He paused dramatically.
“As you can tell, there are members here that you don’t recognize. I hope you introduce yourself and become friends because these are our newest pack members. The dark wood pack we had an alliance with was taken down by the rouges, and we allowed them to join us. All of them have sworn fealty to me and are now a part of our pack. I expect them to be welcome.” There was applause, and a few members howled. A woman yelled out how gracious alpha Titus was and he smiled widely, accepting the praise. He lowered his arms for silence so he could continue.
“Because of this, arrangements were made for the beta and gamma of those packs. So here are our new additions. We decided to pair them up with each other in marriage. Betas, gammas, step forward. Slowly the crowd applauded as my father's betas and gammas stepped forward with their newly engaged. Introductions were made and they stepped back into the crowd. Then Alarick stepped forward alone and Kurt came forward with Lily on his arm, making many girls gasp.
I stepped forward to explain. “Kurt will be marrying Lilian when she comes of age, not right now. But she was one of the gammas of the dead pack and we had to honor their decision.” I heard the confusion as members muttered “one of” over and over again. I sighed, placing out my hand as Sevra stepped into my space, taking my hand and gripping it. “Sevra was the second chosen gamma. It’s unusual and I don’t know why there were two, but because of it she is to become my betrothed, your future Luna.” The cheers were mixed, some were happy and some were filled with women’s crying at me choosing someone other than them. I heard a few remarks with curiosity about the beta.
“Unfortunately their beta was a male and Alarick wasn’t able to be married to him.” I said as Ulric came forward on his own accord. He glared down at everyone, taking his furry out on them. “ he has decided to stay the beta of the dead pack and be welcomed as our guest until he either submits to me and father and becomes an elite or until he decides to move on and join a different pack.” Most people took this in strides, only the members of the dead pack made any sort of objection. Though it was clear it was Ulric’s decision so they had no choice but to accept it.
After the speech happened I stepped down and was glad to see the women stopped trying to muzzle against me. Sevra stayed by my side the rest of the evening, which was probably why they stayed away. My wolf Damion was growling at her and I had to rein him in.
“I heard you were wanting to speak with me, alpha Tate?” I turned around and was surprised to see Lyell.
He bowed down to me, his black hair was slicked back as well except for two strands that kept trying to shift into his chocolate brown eyes. I could tell it was bothering him, but he was trying to ignore it. He chose a white suit this evening with a dark blue shirt underneath, creating quite a striking appearance that I couldn’t help but notice he was getting attention from some of the women who were giving up on me. Especially since he was standing near me, it made him seem all the more important.
“You’re the warrior apprentice Lyell, correct? The one who hangs out with that Omega that belongs to beta Alarick now?” Lyell nodded, though I could see the flash of confusion in his eyes. “Don’t be confused. I know she is sick along with four other omegas, she probably didn’t tell you yet. She was selected to be his omega yesterday after an incident. But that’s not why I wanted to speak with you. I have been looking over the notes of all the upcoming warrior apprentices and the elite apprentices. Of course, all elite apprentices will become as their fathers, unless they are so awful or do something so drastic to lose the title. There just so happens to be three that I will not name that is going to be made into regular warriors instead, once they become of age. That frees up a few spots on my upcoming elite team. I have noticed you have exceptional scores, even better than a lot of the elite apprentices. I make no promises, I just wanted to let you know to keep doing as well as you are and when you turn eighteen there’s a high possibility I will be making you an elite. So congratulations, you’ve earned it.”
I could tell Lyell was excited, and he squealed slightly when Beta Alarick came up beside him with his date.
“Alpha Tate, Sevra. Lyell.” He nodded to each, pausing before saying Lyell as if he was trying to remember his name, but I smirked all the same. “Your father requests your presence. I believe he’s grown tired and is wanting to wrap up the party.” I nodded at him and watched as he dragged his boring date away from the group.
“Thank you for your time Lyell, don’t forget what I said.” He bowed to me and walked off, leaving me with Sevra. I stifled a sigh and smiled at her, trying to see past her calculated cold eyes and see her beauty. She truly was beautiful. “Come Sevra, let us go to father and help wrap up the party, and then maybe if you’re not too tired we could go for a stroll in the gardens and get to know each other more.” She giggles in a flirty manner and placed her hand on my arm.
“Why my future husband, instead of the garden why not go to your bedroom and get more acquainted there? Surely we will be married soon enough, my birthday is in another month.” I paused, then blushed. Surely she didn’t mean that. My wolf gagged, muttering about how gross that thought would be. I shoved him away with a growl.
“Of course, I mean I’d like to get to know you a little bit more first,” I paused, unable to think of anything else to say.
She giggled at me. “Oh, you’re a virgin! How adorable. I’ll have fun with that.” Still, at a loss for words, I quickly sped her forward to my father, hoping it would take all night to do whatever it was he was requiring. Something about her made my skin crawl and I wasn’t feeling like I could even kiss her let alone anything else.
