CHAPTER 1 - Stupid Old Woman
I turn on the light of my phone to check my inboxes. Sadly, there's no message from my boyfriend, Mike. Neither did he reply my texts, I feel like something is wrong and maybe he is busy.
Getting off my bed, I walk towards the door with my ruffled red hair scattered on my shoulder as I tug on my flip-flops to walk down the stairs, only to hear my dad laughing with a shameless woman as they both walk in. Totally ignorant of my presence.
If he wants to cheat, he shouldn't bring them home. My mom is always in-door, drunk from drinking too much and it’s still all because of him. Walking into the kitchen. I ignore them and take a cup, filling it with hot water before dropping a tea bag in it.
"Damn my f****d up life." I murmur as I raise the cup to my lips without blowing on it, causing it to burn me.
[Jane]
You've got to be kidding me, Mel.
I read my best friend's message and roll my eyes as I pick up my phone.
[Mel]
I can't sleep right now, how about we talk about our plans that is almost successful?
[Jane]
A successful plan means our girly times are gone, but it's the best way to get your life together. You can't keep on living with your parents who seem not to care about you when you've got a cool granny.
[Mel]
Right, I gotta go. I need to sleep a bit. After causing trouble, I should have enough energy to listen to the lunatic bark tomorrow.
[Jane]
You are a badass.
[Mel]
Says the bad girl. Good morning/night.
[Jane]
Good night, although it's already morning.
[Mel]
Sleep too, stop sexting that hot guy.
[Jane]
I do not remember telling you about any guy I'm sexting, why are you so sure?
She replies way too fast and I roll my eyes.
[Mel]
Should that even be a question? I know you like the back of my hands. Am I wrong?
[Jane]
No, you aren't. I hate you so much.
I read her text and smile a bit.
[Mel]
More like you love me so much.
[Jane]
Just picture me rolling my eyes as I read that.
[Mel]
I knew you rolled your eyes, Good night.
I send the last text and tap on Mike's chats to see if he has replied, but there's still no message from him.
Leaving the cup on the sink, I ruffle my hair as I walk up the stairs. I open my Mom's room to find her asleep with an empty glass next to her and a bottle of whatever strong liquor she must have ordered newly.
"I might as well just do this a few more times." I mumble to myself and push the door open further.
Walking towards her bed, I take the clean duvet from the sofa to cover her quietly before taking the empty cup off her bed. I take the empty bottle too and turn off the lights, leaving just her bedside lamps on.
Moving my free hand over my mouth as I yawn, I walk down the stairs to dump the liquor bottle in the refuse bin only to find out that I forgot my phone on the kitchen's island. Picking it up, I place the cup on the sink and walk up the stairs but this time towards my room.
***
"Melanie Ava Brown!" I hear my Mom's shrieking voice and tighten my grip on my pillow.
No, no, no.
"Don't pretend!" She adds and I open my eyes only to be blinded by the bright lights from the window.
I can't believe it's morning already. Did I even get to sleep for three hours?
"Mel!" She shouts and I turn to look at her.
Her deity nostrils are flaring in anger as she widens her green eyes at me, causing me to have just one question in my mind.
'Does she not have a hangover this morning?'
"The sub-dean called me, you must have caused trouble again. Get dressed in less than thirty minutes and meet me downstairs." She says and walk out of my room without waiting for my reply.
I look at my nightstand to check the time, but it hits me right that I had thrown it against the wall when it tried waking me up two weeks ago.
Pushing the duvet off my body, I stand up and walk towards the bathroom to do the usual.
"Is that you, dressed in just a tank top and a denim jeans? You aren't following me like this, that's never going to happen! Go back and change into the new red bandage dress your dad's mom sent to you." She shouts and I want to roll my eyes but I hold myself back
I just don’t understand why I have to dress like I am going for a date night when I am about to get transferred in the name of expulsion… actually, that’s wrong. I am really getting my last expulsion today.
I take off the tank top and change in to a red shirt, before returning downstairs to find my mom extremely pissed.
“I said you should change into a red bandage dress, you can’t afford to ruin your dad’s political position.” She says and I sigh.
“If that’s the case, I really want to ruin it. He made you into something else and besides mom, this is a red shirt. I am still dressed in red.” I say and take her bag off the center table.
I walk out of the house with her bag and she walks out after me.
“You aren’t going to sit shot gun?” She asks.
“Are we going to fight over that too?” I ask and she rolls her eyes.
“Sit wherever you want, but pray that you aren’t going to get expelled today because this would be the last one for you. You are way too intelligent to waste your life. It’s all thanks to your dad’s money, you wouldn’t have been able to transfer schools easily.” She says and I shut my eyes close to sleep, making the rest of her rants go to waste.
