4. Spineless cowards

SCARLETT POV He must have noticed the soup in his kitchen if he’s calling me now. Only one missed call. He probably isn’t sure if I saw them or not. Let him keep wondering. Phoebe was kind enough to call the wedding planner to tell her the wedding was off. They teamed up and cancelled everything that was already booked. The harder part will be telling my father. Luckily, I have a few days since he’s out of town right now. My phone started ringing and, at first, I suspected it would be Michael again. Well look at that, it’s actually his bed buddy. Looking at the time, I noticed it was six. We were supposed to meet for dinner at five. The fact that she showed up tells me that this is definitely not the first time they screwed each other. The calls went to voicemail and Phoebe’s phone started to ring. “It’s her.” She whispered cautiously. “You can answer. Just because she’s no longer in my life doesn’t mean you have to stop being friends with her.” I was the one she betrayed, not Phoebe. “No! The fact that she could do that to either of us tells me she was never a good friend. She a slut.” She scowls in disgust. As much as I want to agree and bash her, I know it’s wrong. Kelly has always been very friendly with the boys. There isn’t anything wrong with that, as long as she didn’t hurt anyone. Just because I wanted to save myself for marriage doesn’t mean everyone else should. Or that because she doesn’t, she’s a bad person. She’s a bad person because she slept with her best friend's fiancé. Because she’s probably been sleeping with him for months, if not longer. But especially because she remained friends with said friend and looked her in the face and called her friend without any guilt or remorse. I’m tired of the word friend. “Don’t say that, Phoebe. I’m ending my friendship with her because she didn’t respect me or my relationship with Michael. She didn’t do that because she’s a slut, she did that because she’s an asshole.” I corrected her. We both looked at each other for a few seconds before doubling over in laughter. Phoebe and I had always been much closer to each other than Kelly. We tried not to be bad friends and talk about her behind her back, but she made it very hard. Especially since she constantly tried to bad mouth each of us to the other one. That should have been a big sign that she wasn’t a true friend. We always wrote it off to her insecurity. She was always seeing what others had, being envious. Now that I think about it, it shouldn’t surprise me that she was okay with sleeping with Michael. After all of the calls were made and the wedding planner confirmed she would be sending out a formal retraction to the invitation, we had dinner brought up to my room. Half way through our meal, my door burst open and the last person I expected to see walked in. “What the hell! I sat there waiting for an hour. You guys couldn’t answer your phones?” Kelly screeched at us. I couldn't help replaying the words she moaned at Michael just hours earlier with that shrieking voice. I completely forgot to tell the guard at the main gate that she was no longer welcome when I told him Michael was no longer allowed on the premises. Maybe I subconsciously wanted her to walk right in. I narrowed my eyes at her and the anger on her face started to fade. Now she looked confused. “Tell me Kelly, why couldn’t you make it to my dress fitting again?” I asked, raising an eyebrow at her. Her eyes darted around nervously. Quickly she composed herself and squared her shoulders. “Is that why you ditched me? You guys are so childish. I had important things to do. Just because you’re getting married doesn’t mean the world revolves around you.” She snapped at me. I quickly rose to my feet and got in her face, causing her to cower back. “You want to hear something interesting Kelly.” I took a step closer, she took a step back. “I went to Michaels today.” I took another step, her eyes widened at my words. “I have a key to his place, did you know that?” I wasn’t really asking, so I didn’t wait for her answer. “Tell me Kelly, how long have you been f*****g Michael?” I asked, tired of playing games. Her back had long hit the wall. I invaded her space like she invaded my relationship. Her mouth hung open, unsure of what to say. “Answer me!” I yelled in her face. She flinched and then a victorious smirk appeared on her face. “What was I to do, Scarlett? He was so disappointed when you didn’t give it up at prom. Not even a week later he came on to me, I felt so bad for him. He just kept coming back after that.” She chuckled. I laughed so hard it almost hurt. If she thinks I’m going to feel bad that I didn’t give myself to someone who would cheat on me, she’s stupider than I thought. Her little smirk disappeared and a scowl replaced it. “I don’t care why he slept with you. The only thing I wanted to know is for how long both of you have been spineless cowards with no integrity. You can have Michael. Don’t show your face in my home ever again. Whatever doors my father opened for you when we became friends are closed.” I backed away and pointed at the door. Her once hard face was now full of regret. I knew the last part was the one that hurt the most. There are many advantages to being on my father’s list of acquaintances. Kelly takes full advantage of them and so does her mother. The exclusive clubs and restaurants along with many more perks. Before she could embarrass herself by backtracking, I opened the door and shoved her out. Quickly, I made a call to the guards so they could escort her out and see that she was never allowed in again. “Wow.” Phoebe's eyes were wide and her jaw on the floor. We both knew Kelly was no saint. We just never thought she was so heartless. Her envy would be her downfall. In the end, I think one day I will see it in me to thank her. She saved me from marrying the wrong man. I may still love him, it’s hard to remove such a strong feeling from your heart so quickly. That doesn’t mean I could ever trust him or build a life with him. I will cherish the good memories we once had. Even though he tainted many of the ones from the past year while he was being unfaithful. Time heals all.
