Chapter 11: A Second Mate

1623 Words
-Hunter- I noticed the sun slowly setting as I sat in my office chair, watching it dip below the horizon. I had a few tasks to take care of, but it was hard to concentrate knowing Angela was in my room—where she belonged, no doubt. I turned my wrist slightly, making small circular motions, then did the same with the other hand before stretching my legs. I groaned at the stiffness, feeling sweat break out across my skin as I tried to get my body moving again. It had all been too much—everything that had happened, especially Chris’s attack. I was still hurting and feared he had done more damage than I wanted to admit. I sighed. There was a time when a simple attack like that wouldn’t have affected me. Now it did, reminding me that I needed to get things moving quickly. I couldn’t wait for Elijah to arrive. He needed to see her. I knew it. A stupid smile crept onto my lips as I thought of Angela—her in my arms, on my lap. Just the memory of how she had wiggled around had me hard. I shifted in my seat, doing my best to control my instincts. I wanted to claim her right away, but I couldn’t. Not only because she wasn’t ready, but I also needed to hear Elijah agree. I knew he would. He wouldn’t be able to stop himself. I tapped my finger against my desk before slowly getting up, but suddenly, the world filled with dark spots dancing before my eyes. That was when a violent migraine hit me, sending me down to my knees. I pressed one hand to the side of my head as it felt like a thousand needles were poking into my brain. I knew that in less than ten seconds, I would pass out, and it was better to do so on the couch—less than a foot away—than on the cold floor. I summoned every ounce of strength I had, but the moment my foot hit the floor, everything turned dark. The world spun around, and I heard a loud thud before everything faded to black. -Angela- I had been awake the whole night, clutching a fire poker in my hand, sitting on the couch and watching the door. No one came. Hunter hadn’t returned, and I was thankful for that. As dawn approached, exhaustion started to creep in. I hadn’t slept for two days and was desperate for rest, but I couldn’t stay here. When I noticed the sun had risen, I quickly shook my head, forcing myself to stand and walk closer to the door. Maybe I could escape. Perhaps he had fallen asleep somewhere or left the house for some reason. I had no idea what he occupied his time with, nor did I think I wanted to know. Hunter Dayton is dangerous. There is no doubt about it. And I was foolish for coming here. I was foolish to believe he might protect me. I opened the door just a crack, peering into the dark hallway before pushing it wider and poking my head outside. No one… Strange. Or maybe they didn’t think I would be brave enough to try to run away. They clearly didn’t know me. When I saw the coast was clear, I lowered my weapon but held it tightly. I began to run down the path I had been carried along and down the many stairs, not bothering to be quiet. The house—or castle—was dead silent, and I hoped that if I hurried, I’d be out of here in no time. My heart raced with happiness as I spotted the doors leading outside. I ran down the last set of stairs and through the grand entrance hall, freedom just within reach, and then… I froze. The door swung open, and I dug my heels into the floorboards to avoid crashing into a tall male who had entered, carrying a suitcase in one hand and a bag in the other. There was a loud thud as he dropped the bag. His striking two-colored eyes locked onto mine, and it felt as if time stood still as we stared at each other. Mate! Oh no! No! That couldn’t be true. Wolves didn’t have two mates! I had been told clearly that those with more than one mate were simply whores. Now my wolf was claiming another as hers. This couldn’t be true, but I couldn’t ignore the shock wave of heat that surged through me just from his intense gaze. One eye was blue, the other green. His short, dark brown hair looked a bit messy, as if he had been running his hands through it, and he wore a tight white t-shirt that clung to his strong body, paired with blue jeans. He looked like something out of a magazine, and I tried my best to push aside the feelings he stirred within me. -Elijah- Sh*t… My breath caught in my throat as I stared at the beautiful woman in front of me. She had nearly run into me and was now standing there, looking up at me with wide blue eyes that revealed her shock at seeing me. Goddess, she was simply out of this world. I couldn’t explain it. My heart raced in my chest, and I felt an overwhelming urge to go to her and… Mate! Oh, f*ck. That explained it. I wanted to claim her right here in this hallway. This wasn’t the plan. This wasn’t how it was supposed to be. Yet I couldn’t tear my eyes away from her. She was perfection—something I had never realized I wanted until now. With her standing in front of me, I yearned for her to be mine immediately. She seemed as stunned as I was, staring into my eyes while breathing rapidly, as if she had just been running. The wrinkled white shirt she wore shifted with each breath, and I noticed she looked a little sweaty… That’s when I spotted the fire poker in her hand. Interesting, I thought. Why was she running with a fire poker? I knew Hunter could be intimidating, but no female he brought here ever ran away as if something were chasing her. They usually wanted to stay. It was him pushing them out the door that made them leave. But this one—she didn’t seem like someone who wanted to stick around. I glanced over my shoulder and then back at her. It looked like she was heading for the exit. “Going somewhere, little one?” I asked. I saw her retreat slightly, confirming my suspicion. She was definitely running from something, but why? Who was she? She was born a luna, no doubt. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be able to look me in the eye. The way she carried herself was just like all the women from my world. So why hadn’t I seen her? Maybe it is because I rarely attended those boring parties, I told myself. And it was obvious this little wolf was quite young. Sh*t, I thought. I probably shouldn’t move any closer, but she stirred something in me—a familiar darkness that wanted to emerge. As I stepped closer, she took a step back. A smile spread across my lips. I couldn’t help it. The scent of her fear, mixed with the undeniable arousal she would likely deny, only fueled my need to play with her even more. Goddess, I was cruel. “Running, perhaps?” I taunted. I took another step closer, and she retreated, glancing briefly down at her weapon. I did the same. She wouldn’t really try to… “Ah!” I caught the fire poker just before it hit the side of my head. Irritation spread through me as I pulled the iron from her grasp, forcing her a little closer. I wrapped my arm around her waist before she could escape. “That wasn’t very nice,” I said. “Let me go!” she exclaimed, pushing against me with all her strength. “No,” I replied, a smile playing on my lips as I leaned closer to her neck and inhaled deeply. The sweetest scent filled my nostrils, and a possessive growl escaped me. The aroma of jasmine overwhelmed my senses, and I wanted nothing more than to bury my nose against her skin, marking her and claiming her as mine. “I see you two have met,” a powerful voice said. I moved back, and the sweet female in my arms went still, turning her head. We both looked at Hunter, who stood at the top of the stairs, cane in hand, smiling at us. “Let me introduce you two,” he said. “Angela, meet Elijah. Elijah, meet Angela… my mate.” I stared in shock at the little female in my arms—Angela. She was his mate? What the hell was going on? I quickly released her, and she stumbled a few steps back. But before she could escape, Hunter had already descended the stairs and grabbed her arm. She struggled against him, even hissing slightly. “Isn’t she something?” he inquired, looking at her instead of me. Confusion washed over me as I looked between them, but then Hunter turned, pulling Angela with him. “Come on, Elijah, I need to talk to you,” he said. I knew I was going to regret this, but what the hell—I was already here. I grabbed my belongings, still holding Angela’s weapon, and followed my oldest friend up the stairs.
