ODETTE’s POV.
By the time I open my eyes again, I am on a soft bed in a semi dark room with rain splattering on the window. Letting out a sigh, I gently pull my body to a sitting position as the thoughts of what happened a while ago becomes fresh in my head again. Not only did Zach and that lady inject me with wolfsbane to weaken my wolf, he forcefully took my blood but he couldn’t take the venom because I couldn't transform, he also forced me to sign the divorce papers.
Now thinking about it, tears well up in my eyes. This must be how mother felt when dad served her divorce papers. I mean, I loved him and gave him everything he ever wanted, how could he betray me like this and all for what?
The more I think about it, the more I find it hard to believe that he would do that to me. That is Zach, my mate, my husband. How could he look me in the eyes and treat me the way he did.
Leaning forward, I switch on the bedside lamp and I almost have a heartache when I see the man seated on the couch opposite me.
“Why are you seated in the dark?” I can’t help but ask him.
“What happened?” Malachi asks me, “what happened to you? Why were you tied up?”
I can easily lie to him but this man knows how to get in my head, something I am still trying to process. I don’t know how that is even possible.
“I asked you a question, Odette” he leans forward on his
chair, “do you know how worried I was?”
“It was Zach” I finally drop the bombshell and I see how his eyes darken almost immediately.
“He did what?”
I narrate everything that happened to him and by the time I am done, all the veins on his neck are standing out and he looks really upset.
“That bastard” Malachi mutters under his breath as he pulls his body from the chair, “I am going to teach him a lesson”
“Just let it be” I stop him, “I’m fine”
“Fine?” He scoffs as his eyes travel over me, “have you seen you in a mirror? It will take at least three weeks for your wolf to recover from the amount of wolfsbane that was pumped into your body. Only the moon goddess knows what else was in that”
I don’t say anything, I am not about to tell a stranger about my healing abilities.
“The healer says you need all the rest you can get”
“Thank you for coming to help me”
“I knew that man was no good”
“How did you get us out though?”
“It was easy” he shrugs, “but that doesn’t mean I am not going to hurt that man and break all of his bones”
I don’t say anything, I don’t even have the energy to talk about what Zach did to me because I still feel overwhelmed by it. I mean, he could look me in the eyes and just…
“Thank you for helping me” i finally find my voice, “I will make sure to leave very early in the morning”
“You do not have to go anywhere” he says, “you can stay as long as you want”
“I don’t want to cause a rift between you and your mate…. My voice trails off as he comes to sit on the bed beside me, his eyes peering deep into mine.
“You can stay as long as you want, Odette” his voice is low and I can see him clenching his jaw together, “until I can see that you are fine, I am not letting you take a step out of this house”
“You don’t have to….
“I have every right to” he says, his voice in my head, “and believe me when I saw the urge to send that scoundrel back to the moon goddess is so intense and I want to rip every essence out of his body and make him a corpse. I want to crush every fiber of his being and watch his wolf beg for mercy, Odette. How dare he hurt my property”
“Your property?”
“Yes, my property” his voice hit the room and he doesn’t even sound apologetic about it.
“How am I even your property? My husband…
“Ex husband” he takes the words right out of my mouth, “he hurt you and I am going to make him pay for it no matter what”
Tears blur my vision as I can’t help but think about him, I am still in shock as to how he planned this and executed it.. I just don’t even know how to explain it to myself right now.
“I made you soup, so come..” he stands up and stretch out his hand, “you will feel better after taking it”
“You really do not have to do anything for me, Malachi”
He doesn’t bother to wait for my response and grabs a gentle hold of my hand, leading me out of the room. As soon as we make for the stairs, I realize this is not his house back in New York.
“Where are we?”
“Virginia” he responds, “I figured you wouldn’t want to stay in North Carolina so I brought you here and had my pack healer come from Texas to come check on you. When you are fine, we can go home”
My jaw drop, he asked his pack healer to come all the way from Texas? That’s more than a fifteen hour flight.
“How long have I been asleep?” I can’t help but ask.
“A day” Malachi answers with a shrug, “you were out when I took you from that place”
I don’t say anything again and follow him to the dining table. The house is big and beautiful but not like the one back in New York, I wonder how rich this man is.
“Sit”
He holds out a chair for me and I lower myself on it. Rolling up the sleeves of his shirt, he starts to dish the soup for me. His jaw is still tense and I can swear he is having an internal battle with himself but what could be the reason?
“Tel…” my voice trails off when his mobile buzzes and seeing how he clenches his jaw even more, I can sense it’s his woman on the line.
“She is not my woman” he grits before answering the call.
“Hello…” he says into the receiver, “I am not in town, Bryer. I am in Virginia and won’t be back until when I am done with what I came to do. I will talk to you when I get back” and like that he ends the call and continues with what he is doing.
“You don’t seem very fond of your mate” the words are out of my mouth before I can even stop myself, “I didn’t…
“Do you want me to feed you?” He cuts me off.
“I can do that on my own”
“Hmm”
He sits down in front of me, his gaze on me and I can’t lie, I feel a little uneasy.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
“If I had been one minute late…. I can’t help but imagine what that bastard would have done to you…” his voice trails off. Why is he concerned about me? Why is he acting like he cares about me?
“I am not acting Odette” he says after a while, “I also don’t know why I jumped on the f*****g plane when you called for me, it’s overwhelming but exciting at the same time“
I open my mouth to speak but no words come out, I don’t even know what to say to him at this point.
Luckily his phone chose that time to ring and he immediately hands it to me.
“It’s your brother,” he tells me.
“Did you tell Jayden?”
“I didn’t”
Clearing my throat, I click on the receive button before pressing the phone against my ear.
“Hello”
“Are you okay?” He asks from the other end as soon as he recognizes my voice , “I have been calling you and your phone was not connecting”
“I kinda lost my phone” I tell him, Zach collected it and I guess we weren’t able to retrieve it.
“How did you lose it?”
I look at Malachi whose gaze is still on me like if he stops looking I might disappear.
“I don’t even know how I lost it”
“By the way, why are you with Malachi? He came to the office yesterday to look at you. I called Zach too and he didn’t respond”
At the mention of Zach, my blood begins to boil.
“We had some work, Malachi and I. That's why I am with him. Zach is a bit busy and that’s why he didn’t return your calls. How about we talk when I get back?”
“Sure”
“Okay, I will hang up now..
“Odette” his protective voice takes over, “you are fine, aren’t you?”
“Of course” tears well up in my eyes as I say those lies, “I am…” my voice trails off before another tear falls. How can I tell my brother that the man I was mated to and got married to, the man I made it possible for him to get eight hundred million dollars from my family not only cheated on me but has a child coming on the way, he forced me to give him my blood and made me sign divorce papers? How can I tell him that it seems like history is about to repeat itself because my mum went through the same thing?
I move the phone away from my ear and let out a sniff.
“I am fine, Jayden” I lie again, “just feeling a little woozy from the flight”
“Fine, take some rest and we will talk tomorrow”
As soon as I end the call, my emotions take the best of me and I start to cry, hard bitter tears.
Even as Malachi pulls me into his embrace and I bury my head on his chest, I don’t stop crying. The pain of betrayal is too much for me and the only thing keeping me sane right now is this man holding me in his arms.
