I felt suffocated by how tight mom was hugging me as she sobbed in my small arms.
"They killed him." She said, her voice was hoarse from crying.
"Your younger brother... they killed him because he was an Omega too . They took him! They took him when I was unconscious. I just gave birth to him..."
I was confused and did not know what to do at the time. I hate it every time mom cries but I did not know what to say or do to make her feel okay. I only stayed inside her arms and wished that all those people who hurt mom would disappear.
I blinked my eyes open and the rays of the morning sun hit my eyes making me blink for a while. The woman, who was my mother, in my dreams called me with my name for the first time. The name that I had forgotten.
"Zombies..."
It was the first word that I heard upon waking up. Tilden was holding the radio tight as he threw commands to the person on the other side of the radio.
"Evacuate the non-infected and shoot all who got bitten. We will be there at five." Tilden said before putting the radio down and looked at Garrett who sped up the car.
My heart was pounding.
There were zombies in the dorm?
How?
The dorm was secure. It has tall walls and a gate. Fences with spiked were also built at the entrance and Tilden's squad was also there.
Unless the outbreak came from inside.
"Take one of the buses." Tilden checked his watch. "They will pick up the zombies this noon after we depart but we have to depart five hours early as planned."
Garrett nodded and stepped on the gas. I could feel my back pressing on the seat as if something was pushing me with the increase in speed. I mentally tried to count the people in the dorms. Maybe more than a hundred and I couldn't imagine if everyone were to get infected.
As I recall, the infected could run fast and they smelled like spoiled meat. I looked at Tilden and felt worried about his injury. His wound was still fresh, how could he run in that condition?
But I just shut my mouth because I did not know what to do also.
I closed my eyes and felt my body. I checked if I wasn't in my heat phrase. I was surrounded by alphas so there would be a possibility for my heat to start at any time. I couldn't afford to be a burden again. Maybe I was only unwell at that time because of my nerves. Facing those hungry zombies got into my system, but not now.
"Are you okay?" I heard Tilden asked and our eyes met in the mirror.
He looked worried.
"Yes."
"Stay here and wait for Marie. She will drive this car."
"No, I'll help with the evacuation." I said. " Will your wound be okay? "
Tilden smiled. "Baby's worried about me?"
The car wobbled and it hit another car that was idle in the middle of the road. Garrett tried to focus on driving again.
I frowned and somehow, this stupid man really knows how to piss me off.
"Who do you think took care of you last night? Don't expect me to take care of you again."
The car was filled with Tilden's gentle laughter despite the heavy and tense mood.
"Yes, thank you." Tilden said.
I rolled my eyes to the window but the grim scenery didn't process in my mind because it was filled with last night's 'taking care of Tilden'. I had to wipe the man every time his body would flare up and I also dressed his wound again but something bizarre happened during that process that I did not want to remember again.
Despite being wounded and unconscious with a fever, how could he still have the strength to be so energetic below?
My face heated up and I cleared his throat after remembering the size. It was given since Tilden was a dominant alpha.
While we were nearing the dorms, I was surprised to see a horde of zombies running in the dorms' direction. It so happened that the dorm was near a place where ships were built. All infected employees from the factory rushed in the direction of the sound of repeated gunshots from the dorm.
I felt lost seeing the number of zombies that were running like crazy and non-stop. They looked hundreds or thousands and they never stopped even if they were bumping into each other or running into big rocks and trees.
My heart was hammering inside my chest and thought how could something like this happen?
"Godammit!" Tilden cursed and fumbled on the radio. "Start the bus!"
Garrett accelerated even more and stopped abruptly in front of the dorm gates. The first and second bus just departed and the third was still there. The people inside were anxious and terrified.
"Leave that b***h!" Someone from the bus shouted.
The infected were trapped inside the dorm while the ones who got out were shot dead but one person was still trapped in her room. She couldn't get out because zombies were already banging their bodies on the door.
Marie ran when she saw us arrive and Tilden got out of the armored car.
"Someone's still inside." I heard her said and Tilden nodded. "Tell Garrett to start the bus."
I watched as Tilden walked to the dorm without hesitation after Marie told him the location.
"I'll go also." I said and walked after Tilden while holding the sword but Garrett held my arm before I took a step.
"Let's go." He said.
"Garrett, he's going in alone." I said.
"I saw." Garrett said.
"But—"
"Leander, it'll be okay. Trust him." Garrett said with all seriousness, looking as if he trusted Tilden to be back safely.
“But Marie…”
I did not want to underestimate her just because she was a woman, well, she was an alpha too, but I was worried. I knew what I saw, those zombies were beyond measure.
“Leander, you don’t have to worry. That woman, she’s sick. She’s more likely to survive in this apocalyptic time than me, believe me.” He said. He pat my shoulder. “Let’s go. The people are waiting.”
I bit on my lower lip and gripped the hilt of the sword tight making the sword shake as I nodded.
Garrett lead me to the last bus.
Due to people wanting to get inside the bus first, the automatic door broke and it couldn't be closed. I stood near the door as Garrett turned around and took the driver's seat and the bus departed with me looking at the dorm and at Marie who was preparing her huge guns.
Marie would face thousands of zombies that were coming that way.
I prayed for them to make it.

I was to cover Tilden and wait for him to rescue the trapped woman. My heart was beating fast, not from fear but from the excitement. I could feel my blood rushing in a frenzy and the loud beating of my heart felt like pure ecstasy.
It has always been my dream to join a death squad before and being in the zombie squad was just the same.
Seeing those thousands of undead rushing towards me made me feel so ecstatic.
"Come and taste my babies." I licked my lips as I carried machine guns both with my hands and started firing, hitting those approaching zombies with no single bullet wasted.
The zombies turned towards me from the gunfire sound as I fired non-stop until I ran out of ammo. The zombies who were shot in their heads were starting to pile up making the zombies behind stumbled with the mound of dead bodies buying me some time.
I threw the guns down and grabbed the knives that were strapped on my legs, flipping them with my hand and playfully spinning them as I took a run to the zombies who were witty enough to walk around the pile of corpses and charge at me with their dirty mouths wide open.
