She was in Ren Amatapa’s car! What the hell.
Okafu breathed deep trying to calm her nerves.
It was just a ride. What was the worst that could happen? She was just being paranoid for no reason.
Okafu wiped at the rainwater that clung to her hair and skin. She stared out the window, trying very hard to ignore the man sitting next to her. She could feel him, his overwhelming and dominant presence at her side, even though he kept to his side of the car, giving her space. She shivered as an uncomfortable feeling settled in her stomach.
mmmm, Okafu stared ahead wishing they were almost there.
Silence rained between them adding to tension.
“You know who I am,” he said his words sounding more like a statement than a question.
“Yes.” Okafu bit her lips. Of course she did, everybody knew who he was. What did he expect? She turned to him wondering what he getting at.
He laughed as her eyes collided with his. The sound deep and reach. He seemed so normal in that moment, so far close from the stories she’s heard about him. He was rather kind.
“I was wondering if you’re going to keep staring out the window until you got home.”
Okafu felt a bit stupid and guilty for being rude. “I’m…”
“I understand…its overwhelming I know. But there’s nothing to fear,” Ren said, his voice calm and smooth.
Okafu nodded, relaxing a bit. Ren smiled at her.
“You study at the university?” he asked.
“Yes, medicine.” Okafu said not sure why he was asking her. He didn’t seem like he would be interested in her or what she studied. This whole thing was strange.
“Oh, that’s amazing. Beautiful and clever,” he mused as if he was deep in thought. Okafu blushed and the butterflies increased in her stomach. She quickly stared out the window again not wanting him to see how his words turned her inside out.
“I’m…”
“We’re here, boss.” the driver said from the front. Okafu stared in shock as they came to a stop outside her small house. The rain was still coming down like crazy.
How did he know where I live?
She turned to Ren Amatapa not understanding.
“How?” she asked but Ren was opening the door and getting out. The driver handed him an umbrella. Ren opened the umbrella and walked around the car to open her door. Okafu got out of the car. Ren shielded her from the rain. They walked to the front door in silence, with Okafu feeling like she was in dream.
What was going on?
How did he know where she lived? What did he want from her?
Okafu reached for the door as soon as they reach it. She so ready to be get away from him that when he touched her arm to stall her, Okafu almost jumped out of her skin. His touch was like brand on her skin – so hot.
Or maybe she was just cold from the rain.
“Thank you for the ride,” she said masking her reaction to him.
“It was my pleasure.” Ren bowed slightly, a smile gracing his lips. “I’ll see you soon.” He said and then turned around and returned to his car.
Okafu stared after him flabbergasted.
What the hell?
Okafu felt uneasy. Why did it feel like made the biggest mistake of her life by getting into his car?
