12 The inevitable day-two slowdown had well and truly kicked in, but Caroline was more than used to that by now. When she was in the Met, this was the point at which they’d open up the investigation further and spend time speaking to wider circles of friends, work colleagues and acquaintances of the victim. With such a small team in Rutland, though, they had to prioritise. That wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Reduced numbers meant everyone knew the details, and a laser-tight focus enabled them to get into the nuts and bolts of the investigation. She’d never been the sort of person to take her work home with her — most police officers weren’t — but she’d found it occupying more of her headspace since she’d begun heading up murder investigations here. She felt the burden of responsibility
