The atmosphere in the Lawson household was frosty that evening, and Alex felt thankful his wife didn’t know about the Megan situation, too. Far from merely frosty, the release of that bombshell would send temperatures plummeting to subzero levels.
‘Is that what you actually said?’ Sophie asked, looking at her husband in disbelief. ‘You told them Charlie did it?’
‘No, I told them he’s the one they want to be harassing and interviewing, not me. The guy’s got a criminal record longer than my arm, for Christ’s sake. Why the hell did they come after me instead?’
‘Good question,’ Sophie replied, her voice a little quieter. ‘Did they tell you why?’
Alex felt momentarily floored. ‘Oh, some bullshit about a witness saying they’d spotted someone who looked a bit like me near the scene.’
