Konrad wanted to dispense with the pretence, and openly announce that he (and the inspector) were investigating a pair of murders and proceed at all possible speed. He wanted to recruit everyone who was willing to assist and launch a hunt for a way into the secret cellars beneath the house; a hunt that would not cease until access was gained and the cellars were searched, and forced to reveal their secrets. He wanted to employ all possible means to find the murderer and dispose of him or her, before anybody else fell victim to the house’s dark mysteries.
