CHAPTER 2 The Challenge 

Samantha’s POV

We live in the southeast part of Kansas with only about a 2-hour car ride from Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma so in the early month of March, it can be a bit cold. As I begin my warm-ups with everyone else, I hear the various sounds of the woods waking up. The cows and the horses near the house and the sound of the highway even though it can’t be seen. As I said I have good hearing, and all of this is calming. Until would you know it miss Macy Gold shows up and ruins it all.

“Hey OMEGA” she snaps at me with enough venom to kill a cow.

“Don’t you ever think you will have a chance with any of the males in this pack or town for that matter you filthy low life”, she snickers at the end while her gang of ‘want-to-be’ badasses follows her around like a pup to their mothers Tet.

“And believe me when I say when I take over the role of Luna my first thing is to kick you out of this territory for good”. She says while glaring at me.

 You see Macy seems to think that even though she is 19 that her mate will be Cody. We all know that you sense your mate at the time you shift and the fact that she always tries to rub up on him at school I can almost guarantee that she is not. That and we already know who his mate is, but they are trying to wait till he turns 16 dues to the fact that she is 17. 

“You know I really get tired of hearing that same old s**t story come out of your mouth every time you come around. The whole pack knows that you are the pack slut and will sleep with anyone who will have you.” I say calmly as I am finishing up my routine.

By this time, I had started to gain a peanut gallery of people trying to see what’s going on.  

As I get up for sparring partners to be named off, little old Macy decides to be bold and challenge’s me to a fight. At first, my father gives me a hesitant look, but I give him a grin and agree to it.

“Sure, let see what you got”. I say calmly which believe me is hard and pisses her off even more. My father comes over to set the rules.

“Fine no shifting and nothing underhanded do I make myself clear?” 

“Oh, let her shift daddy I know what I’m getting myself into, trust me.”

“Okay Sam if you say so” he sighs. “BEGIN” he yells in his Alpha tone.

As we move around each other I bounce on the balls of my feet, she sees this and decides to take the first strike which I easily block. Why is it that even though I’m human people seem to forget I do still have my dad and both brothers who are wolves that I train with, as well as our current beta Blaine, who has trained all three of us kids and pushes me the hardest of all because I am human. I return her strike as I jump to the side and hit the top of her spine where her head meets her neck. She screaks in a high pitch whale and I kick a leg out from under her in one swift motion. 

“Are you done yet”. I ask as she lays on her face, blood dripping from her nose from the impact. To this, she jumps up and shifts letting her wolf take over and by the look of it she is out for blood. I see dad and the boys start to move towards me, but I stop them with one look. I strike before she even gets an opening to. I volley myself over her back and land behind her kicking her hind legs out from under her, snapping it in the process and pin her down after she turns back with my arm across her neck.

“GIVE! UP! NOW!” I yell at her. She nods in submission. As her little crew helps her up to take her to the pack hospital, I get up and walk over to my family.

“Don’t make me tell you again you will never be my Luna or mate get over yourself” Cody spat at her looking like he wanted to rip her apart as it was. Everyone shrinks as he uses his alpha tone, even at 15 he is rippling with power.

“yes alpha” she reply’s in a small voice.

“Okay that’s enough for today you kids need to get home and get ready for school,” father says.

As everyone disappears into the wood’s dad looks at me.

“I think you will be going with us this July to the challenges, I think it’s time we show you off.”

I stare at him wide-eyed, not once has he ever offered to take me and this year both Cody and Eli are being presented as the future of this pack as well. 

“Okay, I would love to go,” I say, “Can we all run home together we still have time”.

“That sounds amazing,” says Blaine as he walks up with Whitney.

Cody blushes as he sees her. Oh yea, I forgot to say Whit is the beta’s daughter along with Cody’s mate. It’s so funny to think of my best friend being the future Luna.

“Of course, that means Whit and I will be coming as well, where are they being held this year, has Alpha Royal Denmark made his choice of what region we will have it in?” Blaine asks dad.

“Yes, he has, I just heard from him last night and it will be here in the mid-west, more importantly, our pack will play host to them. I look on wide eyes as he said that. Great on top of enhancing my training so I do not put our pack to shame I am also going to have a load added to my omega chores as well. 

“Does that mean Alpha Denmark’s son Asher will be there as well?” Eli asks purely out of curiosity. For some reason, the name Asher sends a shiver down my spine that I can’t hide from dad or Cody.

“Hey, are you okay baby doll”? dad says looking concerned

“Yea just a little cold, let’s get home we have school to get to,” I say with a fake smile on my face

“Also, I forgot to tell you guys that Alpha Asher will be here starting today and since he is 17, he will be in your classes, Samantha and Whitney!”

Well, this will be one hell of a last school year!

CODY’S POV

           Why is it that stupid she-wolves who will hump anything that move don’t seem to understand that I am not interested in them? I look at Samantha as she is going head to head with the one and only pack w***e Macy. She had been trying to get into my bed for a year now since she heard I was going to be the next alpha. But little does she know I already know who my mate is. I look over to Sammy’s best friend and our current betas daughter Whitney. She is indeed the love of my life. I may only be 15 but the minute she stepped into my birthday party with Sam last year I and my wolf Zen knew she was our mate. Of course, me being young and stupid I freaked out. I didn’t know that you could find your mate so young and with the fact that she was 16 about to be 17 in a few months didn’t help either.

FLASHBACK

How did this even happen? The minute I locked eyes with her Zen howled making my ears ring. I had only just shifted for the first time the night before and was still getting used to the new senses. I mind-linked dad.

‘Alpha we have a problem’

‘Son why are you being so formal you will start training as my equal soon’

‘not the problem DAD I just found my mate and she is Blaine’s Daughter’

Dad locks eyes with me from across the table.

‘Oh, s**t that does indeed change things’

“Blaine, Cody, Samantha, and Whitney I need you four in my office now, please. If you will excuse us, we will be back shortly” Alpha Mark states with both a pleasant and stern tone. Blaine and Samantha look really confused but Whitney and I both knew what was going on. I followed behind beta Blaine with Whitney right behind me making it so hard not to turn around and crush my lips to hers right here and now. As we near the office she grabs my hand and I feel the sparks dad and mom always used to talk about. Goddess help me keep my cool.

‘Mark her as ours now.’ My wolf Zen says.

‘NO dumb ass I don’t want her to freak out plus I want her to want this as I do.’

‘I’m not the dumb ass here you are she’s reacting to your hold as it is can you not smell her’

‘Yes, I can and I’m going to need a dam cold shower as it is after this’ I say as I block him out so I can focus on what is going on in front of me.

“May I ask what the problem is Alpha?” Blaine askes, not yet turning around to see us holding hands and her holding on to my arm as if she thinks I am going to run away or something. She looks so cute as she bites her lower lip making me want to be the one doing it and having to hide my raging hard-on in my pants in front of my sister and our fathers.

 “Now Blaine, I want you to have an open mind on this and do not do something you will regret like hurting your daughter,” Father says using a little stronger tone than he normally does but not going full alpha on him.

“Why and how would I hurt my daughter she-” he stops mid-sentence as he turns around and sees her hold on me. At first, I see confusion and rage flash across his face and Zen is waiting for him to snap so he can protect his mate.

‘If he tries to take her so help me, goddess, I will tear him to shreds’

‘No, you won’t that will hurt her, and you know it, that is her father’

 ‘Still, I don’t like the looks he is giving us’. ‘Same here don’t worry though I got this.’

“Beta Blaine please listen to me; I will treat your daughter with the utmost respect and love. I will take a silver bullet for her if there Is a need for that but, she is my mate and the future Luna of this pack. She is everything I need and would won't, and you know I would never do anything to hurt her.”

He looks at me as his eye slowly fades from the black rage to his soft brown.

“Is that what you want as well Whitney?” He asks looking at her with sadness and love. Whitney is his only child and he loves her as much as he loves her mother.

“Yes, daddy this is what I want I cannot believe that he is my mate but it’s true he really is, and I don’t want him to go anywhere or reject me.” She says almost in tears as I take her into my arms and burying my nose in her neck smelling fresh lavender and rain.

“Okay but there are a few things we need to sort out. First, it is too early to announce her as both your mate and future Luna, you have had no training and cannot protect her properly.”

‘dam mutt who does he think he is’ Zen says in my head angrily.

“However, you each can stay in each other’s rooms in both houses I see no problem with that but please I don’t want to be a grandpa anytime soon,” Blaine says with a smile and a tear in his eyes.

I look down at Whitney who is bright red in the face as I lean down and give her a sweet small but so powerful first kiss on her lips. The sparks are undeniable at this point. “Mate” I whisper. “Mate” she whispers back. 

As Sam clears her throat looking at us with a huge smile on her face and says, “Okay love birds I know your teenage raging hormones are going crazy and Cody needs a cold shower now but let’s get back to the party.”

We all laugh and exit the room as if it was just a normal conversation however Whitney’s mom Alison comes running up to me and throwing me into a hug. She whispers in my ear.

“I am so glad you are my daughters’ mate and as Blaine said please do not make me a grandma yet.”

END FLASHBACK

Sam has Macy on her back in no time like she has done to me many times however she snaps her hind leg like it was nothing at all.

‘She’s getting stronger dad. A lot stronger’ I mind-link him.

‘yes, she is I’m thinking it time we take her with us this year to the competition. What do you think Blaine is she ready?’ 

‘yes, alpha she is she will do us proud there is no doubt to that’

‘why and how has she gotten so powerful here lately, it’s like the closer to her 17th birthday she gets the stronger she gets, hell she helped a kid change a tire at school and almost went overboard and broke the wheel hub on it’

‘I’m not for sure Cody but we will wait, and watch remember with your mother gone we don’t know her whole past and who Samantha’s real father is.’

That alone worries me. She is my sister and will always be no matter who her real dad is however she isn’t just human, there is something else that I can’t tell what it is. We all smell it she’s changing but to what we don’t know.

After father says that Alpha Asher will be joining our pack till the competitions, we all run back to the house to get around. We send the girls in ahead of us while we meet the Royal pack convoy coming into the drive. The four of us are waiting outside the house as they pull up. The driver of the middle SUV stepped out and opened the back door and out stepped Reece the next-in-line for the royal beta position then stepped out Alpha Asher. He was taller than me but not by much he had black hair that was slicked back by his hand and green eyes just like mine. 

See, green eye’s only run in families that are descendants of the first royal family of wolves that the moon Goddess Selene blessed the world with. Our bloodline split off from the main roughly 500 years ago, but we still carry the blood in us thus some of us are blessed with the green eyes like father and me. However, we have never figured out how Sam has green eyes as well. If the pack didn’t know any better, they would think she was Alpha Mark’s real daughter.

“We welcome you to the Rider pack your highness” father says as we all bow to him.

“Mark, my friend you know you are like a second father to me you do not have to bow your head to me, please. I will be staying here for 4 months or more so please treat me as another son.” Asher says with a smile on his face and nothing but admiration for my father.

“Please meet my Beta Reece Mathews.”

“Welcome to you Reece, and this is my Beta Blaine Night and to the left is my Oldest sons Cody who is in training to become Alpha and his Brother Eli who will be his beta as well.”

“OH, so this is the infamous brothers I have heard so much about. It’s a big feat to be 15, shifted only 7months ago and Is known for his fighting skills. Almost as if you have something to protect. Or should I say, someone.” Asher gives me a wink and my mind went blank. How the hell did he know I found my mate only us in the family and 3 others know.

“Don’t worry I only know because I saw how you guys were running together on your way here. Also is this the young man who is known for being an early shifter?”

“Yes, Eli shifted on his 14th birthday a little over a month after his brother did, it was quite a surprise to all of us when it happened but here we are now.” My father says.

“However, I do not see the other young women who was leading the pack in the run here. Who is she and how come she is not here?” he asks

I look at my father wondering how he plans on telling him about Samantha but before he can get the chance worrier Jake comes running form the dungeons outback.

“Alphas we have a problem the rogue we caught this morning says there will be an attack in the south border. He says they know the Royal Alpha will be here and wants him dead since he won’t be under the palaces guards.”

“How stupid can they be. Forgive me, Asher, I had no clue of this.”

“It is fine to let us deal with this while the kids get to school, I am new, so I’ll just show up later and have you introduce me to the rest of them there,” Asher says

“NO dad I’m coming with you”

“No, I need you to protect Eli, Samantha, and Whitney on the way to school, you have to pass the southeast lands to get there and with them so close to the south I want you with them. Trust me son we four can handle this just fine there is only about 20 or so of them we will be fine I promise.”

“Yes, sir I understand let’s go get them out of the house then you can join up with the others”. I say.
