Samantha POV
Tears filled my eyes as I rounded the bend coming up near the river. I had to park the truck about a quarter mile away from the river damn because the city decided a few years back to put a barrier to prevent people from getting stuck in the river while being foolish and playing. I hopped out of the truck putting my keys in my pocket and leaving my Phone in the center console because I really didn't care if anybody was trying to get ahold of me right now. I felt heartache, shame and the unknowing feeling of if I would be rejected or accepted for once. Mother had always told me that a mate is your other half, the one who is supposed to support you, and the one who would love you unconditionally for who you are no matter what. But I was a mere human and he was a royal Alpha. I knew for a fact that the Royal courts would never let a human be queen.
The river was low with barely a trickle running over the dam. It was still cold with no leaves on the trees yet, but little buds could be seen trying to come through. Looking across the river on the banks was a deer drinking water and I noticed another deer, a buck, slowly walking towards her. He nuzzled his head against her neck as they stood there and drank together. I wondered is this what it truly felt like to have a mate. Or is it just a fairy tale for us humans. I saw the way Cody and Whitney looked at each other, you could see the love and affection in their eyes. But maybe that was because they were both Wolves. And maybe the only reason Eli looked at Kat the way he did was because she was a witch, she was at the very least some sort of supernatural creature not a human.
I slowly began to cry as memories of mom flood my mind. All I wanted was to ask her questions, to understand what these strong feelings were. To understand why everybody hated me the way they do. Maybe if the pack had not lost their Luna I would be accepted, maybe if I had shifted and was able to protect mom nobody would blame me. I know I'm strong for being a human, And I don't let anybody see me cry, but still I feel as if I'm missing something and it makes the anxiety even worse.
I turn around when I hear the rustling of brush behind me. I see a mangy Gray Wolf staring at me snarling with deep red eyes. My years of training kicked in and I knew exactly what he was. He was a rogue. I took off across the dam running as fast as I could while not slipping. As I get midway through the damn another rogue about the same size but a dirty brown color, jumps on the other side of the dam. I'm trapped with nowhere to go. I have 2 options, fight which I knew I was good at, or jump into the deep end of the River and tried to swim to safety without the current taking me and pushing me against the dam. I decide to try and fight my way out of this.
As I take my stance the first Wolf charges from my right, I duck as he jumps over and slides down the front of the dam and lands in the River below. He automatically jumps up and glares at me while growling and snapping. The second Wolf is a little harder to take than I would have imagined. He slowly stocks towards me waiting for an opening, as he is about to lunge at me and me about to attack back another silver-grey Wolf launch is over my back taking the rogue down the front of the dam with him. I turned to see an extremely large midnight black Wolf standing on the lower River fighting the first rogue. I automatically realized that it is my father. I stand there not knowing exactly what to do as I see both rogues and Warriors filling either side of the banks. I also see other wolves that I do not recognize and realize they must be from the Royal pack. Suddenly, I am hit with the scent of pomegranates and dark chocolate again and I know that it's Alpha Asher.
About the time I look around to try and find where he is as the anxiety in my chest builds, I am blind sighted buy a small Brown Wolf that launches me into the deep end of the River. I try to come up for air just to realize that I am being stopped by the current, even though the river is low, it's too strong for me to fight. I'm pushed up against the dam of the River by the current unable to resurface.
‘This cannot be how I go out’ I think as I struggle and fight against the current. I must get out of here, I have a mate waiting for me. Whether he will accept me or not I do not know however even if he rejects me, I’m not ready to die yet. Not until I can prove myself that I am not a worthless human, or useless Omega in a pack. I want to prove that I can be better than what they say. However, as my vision slowly begins to have black spots in it and I struggle for air, I began to think maybe this is the end. Maybe I will finally be able to be with mom, maybe I'll finally be able to put the past behind me and I won't be a burden to anyone anymore. As the last tunnel of my vision closes, I feel the undeniable Sparks of my mate grabbing my arm. As I'm pulled to the surface trying to gasp for air all I can hear is someone saying my name. It sounds so sweet like a lullaby calling me to go into the darkness. As I fade though I begin to hear a more frantic voice, one dripping with sadness, longing and the fear of losing me.
“Don't do this to me Samantha, please I beg you stay with me.”
“Come on baby girl breathe don't leave me I just found you I can't lose you already.”
Those are the last words I hear before I slip into a darkness that feels like a deep and unescapable sea.
Asher POV
It took us longer to get to the dam than I had hoped. Due to it being the middle of the day we had to take the long way around the city. As we get closer, I can hear the roars of Warriors fighting. Panic begins to set in and what I feel is not my own, I realize it is Samantha’s. As I come towards the opening of the River, I make the clearing just in time to see Reece’s silvery Gray Wolf jump over Samantha in land on a brown rogue tumbling down the front of the dam.
I see Samantha taking a deep breath and search around for me realizing that she is caught my sent. She is busy watching her father fight the first rogue below her and does not see the small Brown rogue breakaway from the pack Warriors and run towards her. Their bodies collide and she is thrown into the deep end of the river on the other side of the dam. I take off running as fast as I can to get to her however my path is blocked by multiple rogues. This thought alone infuriates both Xander and I and we easily tear through them in no time at all. I turned towards the dam in time to feel the anxiety and suffocation of Sam setting in. I shift to my human form as I climb on Top of the dam and dive in to find Samantha. She was slowly fading sliding, down the backside of the dam while she was suffocating from the lack of air. The current was strong even for me but the fear of losing her was enough strength for me to be able to pull her to the surface.
As she lays gasping in my arms, I realized that her airway is still blocked with water. I bend my head down placing my lips to hers and the undeniable spark that she is indeed my mate is there the minute our lips meet. As her airway's clear she still begins to fade blacking out from the tiredness and lack of strength.
“Don't do this to me Samantha, please I beg you stay with me.” I yell. “Come on baby girl breathe don't leave me I just found you I can't lose you already.” I am frantic at this point.
‘Asher, we need to get her to the pack hospital now’ Mark links me.
I grab hold of her and take off running in the direction of the pack house which is only 7miles from the river. Rushing her into the hospital wing I am met by 2 human doctors.
“Alpha we will take it from here” the female doctor says looking sad and concerned for the child laying in my arms. She was so cold even as she was held tight against my body.
“DO NOT TOUCH HER” I barked at the male doctor who tried to take her from my arms.
“Alpha please, I assure you my husband and I will do no harm to your mate, she is like a daughter to us but we need to get her set up and stabilized to insure she will make it. We also need to stop the bleeding from her head.” She says
As I look down, I had not even realized she was bleeding all over my arm. My wolf and I whimpered at the site.
“I will take care of Sam will you please let my husband take care of you. You have some deep wounds of your own that will need stitches even with your healing powers.” The woman says to me.
“No, I will not get mine taken care of until I know she is fine” I protest.
“Okay, Mike get the I V line set up.” “Right away Cheyenne.” The man who I now know is named Mike says.
I wince at the site of the needle going into her arm and as doctor Cheyenne stitches the long gash on the back of our mate’s neck shut. After Mike is done and Cheyenne as agreed to let me stay in the same room as Sam, I let them work on my deeper wounds on my arms and legs.
“So, I see little Sammy has finally found her mate!” Cheyenne says with a smile on her face as she raps my arm in gauze.
“Yes, and I wouldn’t trade her for the world,” I say still looking at my gorgeous love laying in the hospital bed now changed into a blue hospital gown.
“So, you won’t reject her then?” Mike asks coming back into the room to hang a bag of fluids for me.
“Why would I ever think of rejecting her?” Why are there so many people in this pack, including my own mate, who think I will reject her just because she is human.
“It has been one of her biggest fears for a few years now, that if she had a mate, they would reject her on the spot for being human. She is like this because of the way some of the pack treats her. As I am sure you know they blame her for what happened to Maria. She at first was depressed but as she came around, those of us who are close to her, we reminded her that she has a mate and that there was something to live for and she should not think so little of herself. But that made it worse, she began to say she didn’t deserve a mate or want one. She even made the statement one time that she hoped the moon goddess would spare her the hurt and pain of rejection and not give her a mate at all.” Cheyenne explained to me.
I had tears in my eyes as she told me this. If only I had met her sooner or even approached her differently. She was laying in that bed because I was not able to protect her.
‘We were not able to’ Xander wined in my head. As I focused on her bed, I could see him with his head down at her feet.
‘She will pull through this and we will prove to her that she deserves a mate and that we can be the mate we are supposed to be.’ I told him as he purred in content.
“I promise both of you I will never reject her she is everything I had hoped for and more.”
“Thank you.” They both say at the same time.
“We will leave you two alone. Let us know when she wakes up.” Mike says as he leaves the room.
I sit down in the chair next to her bed and grab her hand. The same sparks are there, only stronger this time and I can tell she has changed her mind about mates. Maybe she will except us just as we do her. I move a single strand of hair behind her ear. As I lay my hand on her cheek, she nuzzles into it making me hum in content. Now only if she would open those beautiful green eyes of hers, I miss them so much.
A few minutes later her family comes walking in as I have my head rested against her hand that is still in mine.
“What have you found out from the few rogues we did not kill?” I ask Mark without even looking at him as I stay focused on Sam.
“Unfortunately, they all had wolfs bane hidden in a tooth and as we started to interrogate them, they broke it open and took it.” He says with a sigh.
“That’s some high-class spy s**t you would see in the movies.” Eli says in a confused tone.
“No not really, we have our elite worriers use the same technique when we go into any highly classified missions especially if it is behind enemy lines.” Reece adds.
“Yea but that’s the royal pack not a bunch of rogues, right?” Cody asks.
He has a point though. That is only taught to the top brass in our ranks so how is it that this group of rogues know how to do it? Is it just a Coincidence?
“I'm going to have to call my father and find out if in any of our records we've had any of our members go rogue that were in the elite group. For some reason this feels more personal than just for power. The first rogue had said that they were after me because my guards weren't around right?”
“Yeah he did.” Mark said
“So, are you thinking somehow they found out about her being your mate and decided to go after her to get to you?” Cody asks.
“They very well could but that means there is a leak somewhere because no one outside of who all was in that office at the school knows that she is my mate.” I will kill whoever dares to harm her I swear by it.
