Chapter Five“I have finished it!” Bettine cried. Nolita crossed the schoolroom and looked over her shoulder. Bettine had been busy on the table after breakfast and she saw that the birthday card she had done for her grandmother was prettily painted and quite well drawn. “That is very clever!” Nolita said approvingly, “especially for a first attempt.” “Do you think Grandmama will like it?” Bettine asked. “I am sure she will be delighted,” Nolita assured her, “because this is the first card you have drawn for her.” “I bought her one at Christmas.” “That is not really the same thing,” Nolita answered. “My mother always thought that anything I made or drew myself was far more interesting and far more valuable than anything I could have bought with money.” Bettine considered this for a
