The third time was apparently the charm. Right before Myrtle was about to give up, Sloan suddenly answered the phone, sounding panicky. “Miss Myrtle? Has something happened? What’s going on? What time is it?” Myrtle said, “It’s nearly six o’clock, Sloan. You’ve clearly overslept. I’m sure you’re relieved that I woke you up.” Sloan, however, didn’t sound relieved. In fact, he sounded exhausted. “Oh. Well, I was up late last night, you see.” He yawned, a loud noise which made Myrtle pull the phone away from her ear. “Yes, I heard about your party. I was very sad that I didn’t merit an invitation.
