Chapter One:
A new life that she did not see coming.
Fate Pierce’s Point of View.
Soft, synchronized hums from my Granny’s voice chimed around the house like a lullaby, cradling me back to sleep.
That had caused a smile to appear on my lips almost instantly, letting it rock me back into a comfortable sleep and enjoy the serenity that the place had gathered. I have never really realized that I would love the weather and the place that my grandparents have bought in this place. Never did I see that being cold would be beneficial for me.
But here I am, loving the way that the cold breeze and the comfort of seeing nothing but a thick view of the forest to calm myself down.
Despite my extensive crying on the plane and having a panic breakdown, I entered the country with the intent of not loving the place but seeing it as a place that I needed to be trapped in until I graduated and was finally allowed to come back home.
I did not see myself being in awe and positively in love with the house.
The house, to my surprise, was sort of modern.
I was aware that the palace had always been very engaged in the old customs. Hence, I thought that I would be living in a historical place as I would back in our home, but this place was modern. Glass walls were surrounding the house, giving me a complete view of the forest and the beauty that it had covered.
“Fate, dear.” I heard Granny’s voice through the door before she softly parts it open, letting her adorable motherly smile flash through mine. “It’s already eight in the morning. Breakfast is ready. You must be hungry from the long trip.”
I grinned, kicking myself up in the bed. “Granny, I am famished.”
“I’m sure you are, dear. Although, I have to warn you that your mother’s cooking skill is very different to mine.” She teased.
I smiled, shaking my head. “You know that I love your cooking, Granny.”
“Good, as I am the only chef in this house and nobody else.” She smiled before pressing a soft kiss on my forehead. “Now, come along.”
Granny’s house was nowhere near humbling, but I was sure that it was because they wanted to have some free space through their vacation in this place. I was not sure that this was considered their vacation when they stayed here until I graduated. They seemed banished from the pack as I was.
I was told that my profile in my new school would be a human who wanted to have an education overseas because she wanted to spend more of her time with her grandparents. Despite that being sweet, it had made me think that my profile was f*****g rich. Granny had the first plan of purchasing a house that was not grand and would not catch more attention. However, despite him not needing to, my father had bought a place behind her back.
Not that we are surprised.
The man will always spoil his daughter.
“Ah, so she is finally awake and off of that forsaken blanket.” Granpapi mocked, laying his newspaper on the table before flashing a smile at me. “How are you holding up with the cold, sugar pop?”
I chuckled before flopping a kiss on his cheeks. “I am holding up just fine, Granpapi. I came to understand why you all wanted to be away from the city close to humans and those vicious honking horns.”
“Stupid f*****g horns,” Granpapi added.
“Larry Alfred Pierce!” Granny gasped, faking a disappointment in her eyes as she looked at her husband, wanting to appear like it was the first time that the man had cursed. “I’m appalled at you. Using those hurtful words. Where are your manners, dear?”
Granpapi grinned at her, already making me frown at this. “They were out in the windows since you bent in that table—”
“Oh dear heavens. I do not need to hear this.” I screaked, holding my hands on my ears as the strawberry fell from my mouth in surprise, “There’s a young lady in your presence, old people!”
They both chuckled, letting me follow our extended laughter as our happiness vibrated through. I do adore how they never really lose the same excitement that they had when they first met each other. From their very adventurous nature that was deprived of the second that they become one of the members in the triad, they had been very crazy and would do things that would surprise even a young kid who is my age.
From what my mother had told me, Granny was pregnant a week after she had met my father. From what I was aware, they are both not keen on wasting time even when they were young.
“Have you called Laurence from the second that you have arrived?” my eyes perked up to my Granny as she mentioned her son —my dad’s— name. I blinked, feeling my eyes blur at the thought of my father. “Calm down, dear. You know he loves you so.”
“I hurt them. Disappoint them.” I replied softly.
“Oh no, no, no.” Granny hushed me before offering me a smile. “You didn’t do anything related to that, my dear. They both know that it was hard to suppress all of those inside you, and your mother did know better as she suffered in the same fate.”
I sighed. “I guess… but I still can not believe that I would do something like that.”
“Listen to me. You’re just different, sugar pop.” Granpapi pinch my cheeks as he lifts my chin, making my eyes meet his. “While you are terrified and disappointed with what you’ve done, there are always reasons as to why we are here. Your father has always strived to make his family—or, to say, your lives better than it is now. He doesn’t understand you yet, but he will. He always will.”
“Thank you, Granny…” I push up a shaking smile. “Granpapi…”
“Always welcome, sugar pop.”
“Now, as far as I hate to break the drama.” Granny grinned at me, placing a folder on my table. It has the palace logo, marking it as the property owned by the King. “You need to fill the school requirements as soon as you can, dear.”
“Of course,” I nodded.
My eyes lingered on the folder in my hands, quite troubled on the awaiting problems that would stir in my new school. While a human could enter, I was just aware that the very reason that I would be entering this time was that there would be no humans by this year. Being the proclaimed human in a school filled with nothing but paranormal isn’t pleasing at all.
It was a piece of information from one of my aunts, someone who has a close connection with someone inside the palace.
Then again, I always see it hard to act nicely and dumb enough to not think that the people in my school were paranormals. I don’t blend with people well as my sibling does, as I have a nasty personality.
“Do not fret, dear.” Granny’s voice pushes me out of my trance. “The council evaluates everyone in here. They could not enter the school if they did not pass those credentials.”
I frowned at the words, as my credits were flawed. “Then how did I pass as a human?”
“Silvester fixed that one for you.” Granpapi smiled.
From the mention of my other grandfather, I smiled. He is one of my favorites, and by the sacrifices he made for my mom and me, I can never do anything but love him to the bottom of my heart.
“You should fix that so we could pass it as soon as we could,” Granny muttered.
I nodded. “Yes, Granny.”
.
.
They were off before I even knew it.
It was around one in the afternoon when both of my grandparents hollered that they were going somewhere, although I already knew that they would be meeting some people for my entrance into the school. My mouth did nothing but respond in a tease, to which they responded with nothing but chuckle. I will always be the witness in that powerful love that they both have, that unbreakable bond that they cherish so much.
My feet brought me into the living room, drape in my cow skin-designed comforter. It wasn’t cold, at least not much that I am used to, but somehow, the wind from the forest was enough to make me shiver, and a part of me wanted to cover my flesh as if by not doing so, I will not let my scent go and into the forest.
Sighing, I let my hands grab the remote and turn the television on. This must be all the effect of not having a phone, laptop, and wifi in my hands. I push a smile, but then again… I could accept all of these abnormalities if it would make the feeling of comfort back.
“Having fun in here, dear?”
It was a couple of episodes of Phineas and Ferb when my Grandparents entered their home. My hands were wrapped around my legs as the comforter was draped around me, giving me a sense of comfort. I was at ease, smiling like the five-year-old kid that I missed so much.
“Granny, you will applaud at what I have done.” I grinned, pushing myself out of the couch.
“Did you clean up, dear?” She guessed as she put her purse down.
“That, I did do.” I smiled before walking towards the kitchen and grinning as I saw her smile in awe. In a royal attendant voice, I then exclaimed, “And I have cooked your favorite meal, dear noble ones!”
Granpapi chuckled before messing my neat bun hair, “You didn’t need to do that, sugar pop. We are here to provide you with what you need and not the other way around.”
“I know about that,” I nodded before pressing a kiss on his cheeks, “But I know how you both love that, and well, I wanted you two to have something from me.”
“We love you, dear,” Granny voiced out, and I felt my eyes water from the emotions rolling through me. She saw through me. Walking towards me, she caresses my face before kissing my forehead, letting my eyes flutter close, “We will always love you, no matter what you choose.”
“I know, Granny. I love you both too.”
“This is to die for, honey.” Granpapi teased his wife as he grabbed a spoonful of the cheesecake, mocking my Granny, who gasped at him, seemingly affronted as her husband’s actions, “Don’t gasp at me. You’re the one who is all so emotional while this is served.”
“You are so sleeping on the couch tonight, Alfred.” Granny pushed.
Granpapi winced, “Such cold heart, Jane.”
The day ended with comfort, laughter, and serenity from the three of us, something that I did not know would be enough to drive me away from the loneliness that I have for not having my brothers around and about. I always see their useless facts as something that I enjoy hearing from time to time.
“Are you okay with not having that much connection with your family? I am very sorry that we did not have everything we needed.” Granny asked, knowing that our connection had been down since I arrived.
I only nodded. “They know that I am fine, and I do not want to miss them more than I already do.”
As we all headed back to sleep, I walked back to my room.
Lightly jumping on the bed, a soft smile ceased on my face as I looked at my view. I could see the palace walls from here. My aunt would share stories about this place, and as she had said, it was beautiful than the pictures. I carefully pulled the curtains down, stopping to give me enough space to enter the balcony.
The breeze from the forest makes my skin itch, the soft hoots from the owls that seem like lullabies along with trees softly hustling to each other. Maybe there was a good thing in being isolated in this place until everything settled down.
Maybe it was not lousy listening to my parents speak nothing but facts.
For I was not even aware that this… this is what I wanted all along.
They were right.
