Khione couldn't sit still. There was just too much on her mind. But how could she not be thinking in overdrive in that moment? She was going to see her mate again. Maybe it was because she could no longer feel the effect of her mate's cruelty but she couldn't help but anticipate his arrival. She should have been feeling anger or disgust or anything that wasn't happiness but her pathetic heart was leaping in joy at the prospect of seeing her mate again. And she was sure her wolf's state was even worse since she was the one that was feeling the true connection to Atlas.
The Princess of the Spirit Foxes watched the naive girl shuffle to her feet. She couldn't help but sigh in dismay. She couldn't believe that the young wolf was actually excited at the prospect of seeing her mate again. She simply could not fathom why she would want to see him again. He had committed the worst crime a werewolf could towards their partner: rejected her. And as if that wasn't bad enough, he had marked her first. His intentions were loud and clear: he did not want her. In fact, he wanted her dead. Yet why was this girl so hopeful? Why was she so forgiving? Princess Electra could not understand the thought process behind her actions.
Sure, the princess herself was once young and naive, however, that was before she had been wronged. Once she had been betrayed and taken advantage of, all of her feelings for lover were lost and the only thoughts and feelings left were those of hatred.
"How long until he arrives?" Khione asked, breaking Princess Electra's train of thoughts. She was sure it had to have been hours since she had called Otis yet there was still no sound. Even if Mount Nerei was far, if they were running in their wolf forms, it shouldn't take all too long anyway.
"He will be here soon," the princess sighed with a slight shake of her head. She couldn't help but think of Khione as pathetic in that moment.
It was only one hour later when the sounds of heavy paws on the mountain's outskirts sounded to Khione and Princess Electra's ears. Khione jumped up from her seat and went to look out of portal that the princess used to see the outside world. It was covered carefully so that no one from the outside could see her, however, covered sparsely enough so that she could still observe the outsides.
Khione's heart skipped a beat when she saw her mate and his beta shift into their human forms. Neither of them bothered to get dressed as they waited for Khione to show up. Khione had forgotten about Princess Electra's plan so she almost ran down the mountain towards her mate. However, the princess caught onto her before she could do such a thing. She then pointed with her head towards Atlas, making Khione realise that the illusion of herself was already walking towards Atlas.
She felt her heart break into small pieces upon seeing the disgust on Atlas's face. He looked as if he was looking at the most disgusting piece of dirt his eyes had ever set upon. Her illusion stopped walking when they were only a few feet away from each other.
"How are you still alive?" he asked, his voice sounding very aggressive. It was as if she was committing a crime by being alive.
Her illusion didn't speak and instead placed her hand on her stomach, as if protecting something lying behind it. Atlas's eyes trailed down and he scoffed as he took a step towards her.
"Are you sure it's mine?" he asked, the disgust on his face only growing further. Before her illusion could speak, he stepped even closer and took a whiff of her skin, taking in the scent of the body.
"It's your she confirmed," looking half as heartbroken as Khione felt. "I have only ever been with you."
Khione felt tears burn her eyes at the scene she was seeing before her. Had it been her in place of her illusion, she would have dropped to the ground and begged him to stop. He was only adding more fuel to the fire in her heart by behaving like that. And it was even worse considering she truly thought he would be happy to find out he was going to be a father.
"Why are you doing this?" her illusion asked, tears falling down her face. "He's your future!"
Atlas pulled back away from her and spat on the ground next to her feet in disgust.
"I'd rather have no future," he said so passionately that Khione felt his words vibrate through her bones.
She gasped, feeling pain so strong that even Princess Electra couldn't block it out. Slowly, the pain that she had been suppressing had been returning to Khione. She tried to ignore it by turning her attention back towards Atlas and her illusion, but that only pained her more.
"I will not claim this child," Atlas announced, rejecting Khione for the second time.
Khione's illusion opened her mouth to respond as desperate tears fell down her face, however, the words died down in her throat when Atlas suddenly pulled a large object out of a bag Khione hadn't even realised he was holding: a silver stake.
Another gasp involuntarily escaped from Khione's throat. Even if she wanted, she could no longer deny that he did not want her. In fact, she couldn't even delude herself into thinking that he didn't want her to suffer. The silver stake confirmed everything she hoped not to believe.
Not only had he meant to reject her, but he also truly wanted her dead.
There were only two things in the world that were absolutely toxic to werewolves: wolfsbane and pure silver. If either of them mixed with a werewolf's blood, the werewolf would be burnt down to dust. It was said to be excruciatingly painful and it was such an evil practice that only the worst of criminals were punished with it. In fact, it was so bad that only two wolves in history were ever staked by a silver stake covered in wolfsbane, both of which killed hundreds of wolves for their own personal gain.
Khione couldn't help but feel horrified. What had she done that he thought the most suitable death for her was to be staked?
"He wouldn't," she found herself saying barely above a whisper. Her voice sounded so broken that even Princess Electra found her cold heart ache. "He can't."
Her illusion shook her head as she took a step back. She was begging him to think over his actions, telling him that he would regret it. However, Atlas did not look like he was hearing a word of it. His eyes were blackened with hatred.
Khione did not know what she had done for him to hate her so much but no matter what she could not accept such actions. He had proven his cruelty when he rejected her however, this was just on a whole other level. This was simply evil.
Atlas took another step forward and roughly pulled Khione's illusion towards her. He then leaned forward and whispered something in her ear. Khione could not hear what he was saying but she could see what he was doing as clear as day. Once he finished whispering to her illusion, he pulled the stake back and pushed in deep into her heart.
Khione's illusion let out a blood curdling scream, making Khione cover her own mouth to stop her own screams of dismay. He had really done it, he staked her right in the heart.
And then as if he hadn't just committed the most heinous of crimes, he turned around and shifted in to his wolf form before he set back off, not bothering to even give a second glance behind at his dying mate.
His beta, Otis, looked down at Khione, a somewhat sorry look on his face before he too shifted and followed his alpha back to their pack.
As soon as they were out of sight, Princess Electra stopped using her power, causing Khione's illusion to disappear.
Khione herself wished she could disappear. She began to hyperventilate as everything began to slowly make sense in her brain. He, her mate, killed her in the most evil and cruel ways known to her kind. And he held no remorse whatsoever.
Khione's entire body began to shake as she panted, trying to catch her breath again.
To believe that she had been deluding herself into believing that he would regret what he had done. To think that she thought he would take her back. She was a naive fool, and she was finally beginning to realise it.
As she sat there and replayed the entire scene of Atlas staking her in the heart over and over again, her heartbreak turned into anger. Her pain turned into hatred. She did not deserve what he had done to her and it was not fair that she was suffering alone.
They all deserved to suffer. Everyone who rejected her and kicked her to the side, all of them deserved to suffer just as much, if not more than her.
And she would make sure of it. She would not let any one walk over her again. Never.
"Help me," Khione said through her teeth. "Help me avenge myself."
"You do not want that," Princess Electra responded almost immediately. "You're just heartbroken. You'll get over it in a day."
Khione stood up to her feet and although her body ached, she ignored it and stalked over to the princess.
"No," she spat, a single angry tear dropping from her eye. "I am not heart broken. I am angry! What did I do so wrong that justifies such suffering? If I'm forced to suffer, then so should they!"
Princess Electra looked down at the shaking Khione and shook her head, "I am afraid I do not know how to help you."
Khione scoffed, her eyes burning with tears of anger. "You do. It's why she sent me to you. Because she knew that you would be able to help me avenge myself. You can help me!"
Khione sounded almost desperate by the end of her sentence. But she was at a point in life where she had no one around to help her – no one besides Princess Electra. And she was sure that her mother sent her to the princess because she believed that she would be able to help her.
"Please," Khione said, her eyes raging, "You have to help me."
"Is it what you really want?" Princess Electra asked.
Truth be told, she already knew it was what Khione wanted. Ever since Khione first walked in, she could see that the child was destined for greatness. She could see that there was nothing she would not be able to achieve as long as she put her mind to it. However, the Khione's mind was too preoccupied in self-pitying thoughts that she herself was not aware of her own potential. She was not aware of her own true feelings, her anger and her hatred. Princess Electra needed her to leave the self-pitying aside, which was why she suggested such a scheme to Khione. Of course, the course of action turned out even better than she had expected and Khione's mate turned out to be a true monster. Now that Khione was in the right state of mind, she was sure that she would be able to achieve anything.
However, she still wanted Khione herself to be aware of her own feelings. So she pushed her until Khione herself accepted her anger and hatred completely.
"Yes," Khione spat, her eyes burning red with tears. "There is nothing I want more in this world."
Electra nodded her head as a smirk began to grow on her face.
"As long as you truly want it," Princess Electra said, "I'll help you avenge yourself."
Khione swallowed the lump in her throat and forced the tears back. She would no longer let herself cry. Especially not over those who turned her life into the Hell that it now was. From now on she lived for one thing, and that was to take her revenge. And she would not stop until she had them all begging her for mercy.
"What do I do?" she asked, her voice low but clear. She was willing to do anything if it meant achieving her goals.
Princess Electra looked Khione straight in the eyes and uttered one sentence that Khione never even imagined.
"You become the Empress of the Wolves, and rule them all."
"W-What?" Khione asked, her mouth slightly parting in shock. She wanted to avenge herself, in fact there was nothing she wanted more. However, becoming the Empress was no easy feat.
"You have two choices," Princess Electra told the reeling she-wolf. "Either, you succumb to the pressure and live the remainder of your short life as an undignified rogue; or, you become just like your enemies until you rise above them all."
Khione's body slowly stopped shaking as she began to process all that information.
And at that moment, Khione had to make a decision. Princess Electra was right, if she wanted revenge, she couldn't just aim small. She needed to aim big. With how her body was reacting, she did not have much left to live. Her body was not taking to the rejection well and even with Princess Electra blocking out the pain, her body was reacting. She gave herself no longer than a month. Which meant that she had a month to live in hiding since she had no pack left to take her in.
Her other option was to become just like her enemies: cruel and emotionless. She needed to be strong to survive. And if she wanted to become the Empress, she needed to be deceptive and she needed to use her intelligence. But she was Khione Blaecwulf and she knew that she would be able to achieve anything she put her mind to.
So at that moment, she made her decision. She would no longer be the quiet and submissive weakling that obeyed the word of others. She would be the one that they would obey instead. She wanted to rule them all. She wanted to become Empress Khione, the ruler of the wolves.
Knowing very well that Princess Electra could hear her thoughts, she asked, "How do I do that? How do I become the Empress?"
"You die," Princess Electra answered, unfazed by her own words. "The first thing you need to do is die."
