SUSPECT I : RON JAMES (PART 2)
"Ron we need to talk."
He turned around slowly with his usual dramatic effect trying to look cool but uninterested, he always switched character whenever he was around the female gender. I guess if you're once a playboy you're always a playboy.
"Sup pretty....oooh kimberley," he tried to hit on me without realizing before he dialed back and scratched his head in embarrassment. His two friends Marcus and Fred burst out laughing at his reaction knowing he screwed up. How kayla was still dating him was a mystery to me.
I overlooked everything and went straight to the point, "we need to talk," I looked at the two fools behind standing by the lockers waiting on me to spill it, "just you and me."
"Oh come on what's to hide kim I promise I wont tell," Marcus countered quickly like he knew I was about to tell them to buzz off. He was basically a cheaper lesser version of Ron trying hard to emulate his friend but only being half as good. Marcus was a dumb follower, there was once a time when we were friends back in middle school and his main motivation in life was call of duty and other weird video games. He was cool and fun to be around but that all changed when we became freshmen and he was swept under Ron's wings, he dyed his hair black, completely renovated his wardrobe, got rid of his glasses in favour of contacts and generally became an asshole. Sometimes I wonder whether it's all a ploy to stay afloat socially and the old marcus is still in there.
"Shut up marcus nobody asked for your opinion," I spat back.
I saw a hint of sadness and something deeper in his eyes but he pulled on the cover in a flash once again hiding his emotions.
"Whatever let's go fred and leave RJ to deal with the bitch."
Ouch I know I was harsh but did he really have to call me that. I let him have his petty last words.
"Yeah so what's up second period is about to begin so make it quick," ron said.
"Its about kayla do you know where she is."
He frowned and huffed heavily like he was lifting a heavy load, " no I dont."
"Well she didnt come to school this morning and no one else has seen her since yesterday evening I was hoping maybe...."
"Look I dont know means I dont know okay you're her bff why dont you ask yourself that question."
It was a vicious response and one I didnt personally provoke. There was definitely more to their relationship that I was out of the know and it showed on Ron's face, he was mad at kayla mad at something she did. But the question I needed an answer to was did he know anything about her sudden disappearance.
"Well you're her bf so you're going to be hearing more of that question maybe more than me if she doesn't show up," it was a subtle threat and eye opener for him. He relaxed and scratched his hair roughly, something was clawing at him from the inside and it showed.
"I really dont know Okay I last saw her yesterday at lunchtime and we havent talked since."
"Well her parents are going to file a missing person report soon if she doesn't show up."
"f**k look kayla and I we have our issues but uurgh f**k I love her and I wouldn't hurt her."
I grinned slightly seeing through his sugar coated lies, it really wasnt hard to get the words out of him, it was embarrassing for a self proclaimed master of the tongue but he was spilling it out without me insisting.
The bell for second period rang cutting our conversation short.
"Kim I'll find you later after school and we can figure this out look for her even," he turned around and walked into the sea of students.
Even though he was bitter at the beginning his mood shifted drastically to worry once I mentioned her possibly going missing, I still didnt believe he was genuinely scared for her more than for himself but maybe it was my own biased feelings. I didnt know what to make of it and had to wait until after school to see his moves.
I made my way to the English literature class. It was kayla's favourite session of the day. She was such a bookworm going through novels, books articles and almost everything that virtually had words on it. I smiled thinking about her nagging on about me not expanding my imagination when I bailed on writing our joint book report.
"I should dump you as a friend," kayla said with a playful grin.
I decided to go along with it, "yeah and what would you be without me."
"The coolest girl in school."
"Please dont make me laugh you're a nerd if it wasnt for me you'll be way lower on the social spectrum."
"Well better that than lose out on a scholarship to Yale or Princeton."
I rolled my eyes at her response, "good luck with that nerd."
She threw a book which hit me square in the face before falling into my hands, she laughed and ran off trying to get away but I wasnt going to let her get one over me as I chased from behind around her house with the book in hand.
This is why I valued her more than most other people, her determination and focus to be the best and get the most coveted prizes available but do it with flair and have fun filled life while doing it. The weight burdened on her from all the work she did never showed on her face she was always smiling, always ready to help others.
"Ooh not know why why why me," she said suddenly stopping in the kitchen as her phone rang. Her mood changed as she seemed more annoyed .
I stopped the chase as well concerned, " what's wrong?"
"Oh it's nothing," she said cutting off the call and placing her phone on the kitchen counter.
Wrong move as I caught a glimpse of the caller id.
It was saved as only one letter 'M'.
