KIMBERLEY
"Hey Kim why dont you let me drive today," my annoying little brother Todd pleaded.
I had to put up with his pleas for the better part of the semester ever since he became a freshman and had to transfer to my high school which meant free car rides for the rest of the year. Lucky brat, I had to to rely on the school bus for two years before I got my baby BMW 3 series G20 and he just hitches rides with the cool senior and scores more extra popular points with his class.
"For the last time no your not even near driving age you should instead be thanking me for letting you sit in my car."
"Huhh your car last time I checked dad bought it for you."
"Shut up you dork or you'll be riding the bus like a loser."
"Yeah whatever I'm still going to be cruising it in two years time when youre off in some college far away."
I rolled my eyes and let him have his short lived victory, I would definitely get back at him later. He continued ranting on about cars and his new video game that I could care less for , the usual nonsense and I just sat there trying not to go crazy on him for twenty minutes. I loved my bro but sometimes he was too much.
We finally made it to Edgewood Academy, the creme de la creme of the schools in the county. The school gate security guard smiled at us as he normally did welcoming us in, he was very jovial man for such a menial job position and always wondered how he was able to keep up the smiling charade every single day. We made it into the parking area where groups of blue blazers, sweaters and white shirts were huddled together around their cars chatting and texting away as they waited for school period to start.
"See you later siz," todd shouted while jetting out of the car to meet his friends before I could turn off the car after parking. Alone at last I took a deep breath and lay my head on the steering wheel, Edgewood was a stuck up private school where the weak willed were eaten on the daily and a tough exterior assured no one f****d with you but thiswas an especially rough week for me and I needed time to get myself together before stepping out. 'Just another crappy day' was what kayla would say most of the school mornings. I laughed thinking about her, I checked my phone to see if she had sent any message since yesterday but there was nothing.
"Get out of the car Kimmy girl!"
I rolled my eyes and groaned knowing my last moments of peace and deep thinking was over.
"Kim are you dead come on youve got to know what I just heard it's so juicy."
Anita was my second best friend after kayla of course since freshman year. She was originally from Nigeria but moved here when she was thirteen, her father was an oil baron and money was basically an after thought for her. She is by far the richest student in the school and she's really not afraid to flaunt it. From the expensive Lamborghinis, jaguars and cadillacs she shift on the daily and the gold and diamond studded jewellery, she was on a another standard of living. But deep down we both knew it was all a cover up.
"Alright chill I'm getting out are you high," I said getting out of my car.
Anita was leaning on my car's back door, her eyes fully focused on her iphone, next to her was her boyfriend Jordan.
"What's up kim," he greeted with his usual swagger that made him an attraction among the schoolgirls.
"Cool."
"Guess what," anita said her eyes still on her phone.
"I really dont know just tell me already."
She put her phone back in her blazer pocket and looked at me with a big smile on her face.
"Linda just quit the team yes!yes!yes! that means new volleyball captain which means kayla is captain and you are her vice isn't that great."
She was in a cheerful mood about but after the big fallout and the consequences I dont think I wanted to be around the team for a while.
"Hey by the way have you heard from kayla I texted her yesterday but I haven't gotten a reply."
"Havent seen her or her ride in school this morning either," Jordan added on.
That got me worried, kayla was an early bloomer and she was always among the first to arrive thanks to her a thousand extra curricular school activities. Sometimes I thought she was a machine juggling her studies, volleyball, swimming, numerous clubs and being a student counsellor as well as a student leader. 'Do it all' kayla was what many students had dubbed her and I couldn't agree more.
"Maybe it's a bad day for her," I pitched in, "but it's not herself to be this late let me call her."
I took out my phone and went on with calling her, the phone rang for about half a minute before going to voicemail.
"That's so not her," anita said.
Our conversation was cut short by the school bell ringing signalling the beginning of first period. We made our way into the large main building of the school together with hundreds other students. A hey here and a hi there were passed around as we walked through the hallway, being we were seniors and high up on the popularity scale we had a large 'friend' group to appease.
"Uhhh I have physics in the morning sooo lame look kim if kayla doesn't show up by first period we gonna have to find her," anita said before branching off with jordan leaving me to walk alone to my literature class.
It was when I passed by the principal's office did I realize something was really off. Kayla's parents were standing outside in the hallway with our guidance counsellor, Mr. Lowry.
"Kim kim," kayla's mum called out after seeing me causing all six eyes to look my way.
"Frank, Nancy is everything okay I havent seen kayla this morning," I said with concern approaching them.
Nancy was close to tears, a frightened expression on her face while Frank was as stoic as he could be but with hints that he was obviously worried. He was the one who spoke up.
"No kimberley it's not okay kayla didnt make it home yesterday."
