EMERALD’S POV
-----
After breakfast, I went back to my room. I wore a body-fit high-neck sleeveless white dress. I put on my white heels and took a small white clutch.
I sprayed some perfume and let my straight brown hair be as it was. My makeup was on point and I was satisfied with my look.
“Emerald!” I heard my voice being called and I turned to see Kayla enter my room. I didn’t say anything but let her tell me what she wanted.
“That day at the mall, I had bought a chain for you when I was angrily walking towards the food court.” She confessed and I noted that she had brought the chain for me before she knew I was buying her clothes.
“I saw it and it reminded me of your eyes, so I just ended up buying it for you. I just didn’t know when to give it to you but since you have an interview today, I wish to give it to you as an encouragement.” She said while opening the small box.
There laid an emerald green diamond in circle shape, enclosed in a rose gold chain. I did like it at first glance.
“Can I put it?” She asked and I nodded. Since I had my heels on, she couldn’t reach up. She was already an inch shorter than me so I bent down a little, putting my hair on the side so she could put the chain on for me.
“Thank you,” I said as she finished latching it on my neck.
“Do well,” She wished me and left the room. I sighed as I felt happy but also burdened by the chain’s presence on my neck. I played with it while glancing at it in the mirror.
I took a deep breath and regained my stance. I carried my purse and my file in one hand while picking up my car keys.
“Take West with you,” Dad suggested as soon as I stepped down. I shook my head.
“I suggest you send him with Kayla. She is going to finalise her engagement and wedding grounds.” I suggested and he glanced at Kayla, who nodded.
“Okay, but you take care of yourself,” Dad advised and I nodded. I went to him, pecking his cheek and he smiled.
“Now it looks like someone does love you.” I teased him as I saw my lipstick mark on his cheek.
“You naughty child!” He called out but I was already going down the garage.
-----
I parked my car on the curb before getting down. As a given, my blue Ashton Martin was gaining attention. My Chevrolet was for racing so I seldom took it out for going out.
Kingstons and Co.
I read the name and smiled. I always wanted to work in this company to design homes for everyone. As an architect, it was my dream to build homes for people where they found happiness and comfort.
I walked inside and as expected, the building was quite sexy. With all the walls and glass doors, it was well-made. I liked the architecture of the building.
I found the receptionist desk and went over there. She glanced up at me and gave me a polite smile. She had a smiley face that wasn't caked much with make-up. A dress code like the others on the table.
“What can I help you with?” She asked me and I nodded.
“I’m here for an interview. Where should I be?” I asked her while I informed her about the reason for my arrival.
“Your name?” She asked me. A small crowd gathered and it consisted of mostly women.
“Emerald Lance,” I answered, ignoring the crowd and she checked it on her computer.
“You should go to the twenty-eighth floor.” She instructed me and I nodded.
“Who’s that?” I asked her and she blushed. I turned to see the man’s back as he walked towards the elevator.
“That is the CEO of the company, Mister Kingston. He only recently arrived here or he used to stay in London. Everyone is too fond of him and can’t get used to his charms yet.” She blabbered continuously and I could tell even she couldn’t get used to him, yet.
“Thank you,” I muttered before walking towards the elevator. I needed to go upstairs and I didn’t like to be late unnecessarily. I pushed through the crowd to at least take the elevator beside it.
As I was almost reaching, their elevator arrived and they stepped in. I was getting happy that the crowd was getting divided but a woman dashed me in the back.
“Excuse me?” I yelled at her, turning back and she looked at me, glaring at me. The woman was in a white shirt and black skirt with heels but couldn’t tower over me.
“Excuse me! Because of you, I missed the elevator.” She said to me and I glared at her. She should be apologizing but she was blaming me.
“And? Taking that elevator was the only way to converse with him?” I asked and she was taken aback by my statement.
“How dare you?” She yelled at me and I felt rage.
“Just how you dare to argue with me when you should be apologizing. Mind you, I’m not the one you should be messing with.” I warned her and she glared at me.
“You, mind yourself.” She tried to warn me but it was clear as water that she was scared.
“I will. I don’t like to waste my time on useless things.” I told her and at the same time the elevator came down. It was empty so I went inside and shut the door on her face, pressing 28.
I do tend to make good exits.
-----
I walked inside the cabin when I was asked to. I was the first one on the list and the interviews hadn’t started yet. I kept my calm and sat waiting for my name to be called.
“Miss Lance, you can go in now.” The receptionist on this floor said. I stood up and walked towards the room I was asked to.
As I entered the room, I saw a big table where three people were sitting, two men and one woman. One of them was the woman I had a conflict with earlier. I sat on the opposite side of the table where a chair was present.
“Oh, welcome.” The woman taunted me and I kept a straight face. I handed my file to her and she opened it.
“Introduce yourself, Miss Lance.” The woman was particularly picking on me but I had resistance over myself before making a person cry to tears or insult them.
“I’m an NYU graduate in architecture. Still twenty-two with new ideas blasting my mind every moment and who is enthusiastic to always create something new.” I answered and she nodded, looking at my file.
“You’re quite young to be coming here and that too without any experience.” She commented and I nodded.
“Just like how old age doesn’t mean being well-knowledged or having etiquettes, the same goes for young people. Young doesn’t mean stupid or mannerless.” I answered and she knew what I indicated.
“What are your plans, coming here?” She asked and I smiled at her.
“They surely aren’t the same as you,” I asserted and she narrowed her eyes at me.
“I mean, I am here to learn and grow from scratch unlike you who already has so much experience and has learnt a lot of things,” I explained and she looked away.
After that, she kept herself under control and the other two men were questioning me. The interview went quite well after that. I was able to answer all the questions easily.
“Miss Lance, what if we won’t be able to hire you?” The woman whose name I didn’t bother to remember, asked me and I just smiled at her.
“First thing, everything states that I’m fairly qualified for this position. Second thing, if you still don’t hire me, I would believe you’ve crossed the line between personal and professional. Thank you for your time. Have a good day.” I illustrated all at once not giving a chance for them to speak, leaving the room before I burned it down.
I walked towards the elevator with my head held high. The elevator was almost reaching my floor when I felt someone call for me. I turned back and the elevator dinged.
“I won’t be taking it, sorry,” I muttered as I tried to reach out to my phone in my purse. It was Miranda calling me. I immediately put it in silent mode.
“Good morning, Sir.” The receptionist in front of me greeted someone behind me. I glanced at her and then turned around only to see the elevator doors.
“Were you greeting a door?” I questioned and she chuckled.
“Our CEO was in the elevator.” She informed me and I hummed.
“Why did you call me?” I asked her to ignore that CEO because I had heard enough about him. I would search on him if I had some time on my hands.
“Oh, right. I was here to inform you that you have cleared this round. The other one will be a small test regarding the history of buildings and materials, as such. You’ll be notified by the end of this week about your selection.” The receptionist informed me and I nodded.
“Anything else?” I asked her and she nodded.
“Please take that elevator. This one is private.” She asserted and I nodded. I walked two steps to the left and pressed the other button.
“If I didn’t call you, you could’ve met our CEO.” She continued, sighing dreamily. The women here and the CEO.
“I’m not interested,” I answered and she scoffed, thinking it was a lie or so.
“It’s a pity that you bat for the other team.” She commented and before I could say anything the elevator door opened and I stepped in.
“Even then I wouldn’t be interested…in you,” I said to her while pressing the button and then closing the door. She registered my words too late. I didn’t want to say those words to her but her speculations made me want to tell her the truth.
My phone was vibrating in my purse and I finally answered it.
“Where the hell are you? I’m waiting by your car.” Miranda proclaimed and cut the call. I glanced at my phone with a questioning look but I was already down. I stepped outside the building and as said, she was by my car.
“The love you have for me makes me want to bat for the other team.” I cooed, recalling the earlier incident. We both sat in the car and I drove away from the office.
“I know, right. I have the same feelings.” She teased and I chuckled.
“Where is this coming from, though?” She asked and I ended up narrating the whole story to her.
“You should’ve seen the CEO then, what’s the big deal in that?” She huffed and I shook my head.
“I already have my eyes on someone,” I answered and she squealed.
Aiden's handsome face flashed in front of my eyes and I wondered when I'd be able to see him again.
“I don’t want to be deaf,” I warned her but she ended up squealing one more time while I glared at her.
“By the way, should we search about that new CEO… for me?” She questioned and I gave her a deadpanned look.
“If you want me to throw you out of the car,” I warned her. I had heard too much about that CEO and I didn’t want to hear anymore.
“What about once?” She attempted again and I let out a deep sigh.
“I don’t like to waste my time on things that don’t mean a lot to me.” I declared and she huffed.
“Okay. What do you say about going to have something?” She asked and I smiled.
“좋아! What about pizza?” I asked and she nodded, frantically.
“Let me treat you because there was no way I am not getting that job,” I announced and we both squealed at the same time.
“Celebration morning!” We cheered and I zoomed my car on the road.
