17 “Drifter!” Allie shouted as she hurried to his side. She grasped his shoulder with her free hand and felt his body shiver beneath his clothes. “You shouldn’t have done that!” Drifter lifted his face to her and showed off a shaky smile. “Our foe didn’t give me much choice.” She shook her head. “There had to be another way.” Drifter clutched his chest but eased himself onto his feet. He drew off the handkerchief from his hand and Allie glimpsed his healed palm. “There probably is, but we need time to set it up. My effort may have just given us that time.” He tried to wrap the cloth around his new wound, but his other hand shook too hard. Allie set her hands atop his shaking one and smiled at him. “Let me do it.” A wry smile slipped onto his own lips as he held out the cloth
