"What the f**k, Veronica, what is it? Why are your cheeks so red from anger? You could explode at any moment." Alexander said as he gawked at her.
"What the f**k is wrong with you, Alexander?" She yelled. "I pleaded with you to offer Elizabeth a job, as a secretary, not as a slave."
His eyes narrowed. "Who enslaved her? Definitely not me!"
"For God’s sake, Alex, not everyone can survive being a workaholic like you." She stated, waving her hands in the air frantically.
Crossing his arms over his chest, he asked. "What’s all this about?"
"Well, I went to her house, and her dad informed me that she had not gone back home since she left for work yesterday. What the f**k have you been making her do?"
He shrugged. "The work she was paid to do, obviously."
"No, she wasn’t paid to come here and die!" She snapped.
"And she is not going to die here." He retorted.
She sighed. "Well, at this rate, she probably would."
Her gaze darted to Elizabeth. "And you, why haven’t you been picking up your calls?" she yelled.
"You have been calling?" Elizabeth asked.
She quickly opened her bag and searched through it for her phone. When she finally found it, she pulled it out and looked at the screen.
She gawked at her phone when she saw the number of calls she had missed. Not only did she miss Veronica’s calls, she also missed her father’s calls—He had called her multiple times.
"Let’s go, your parents are worried." Veronica said, pressing her lips tightly together as she sauntered to where Elizabeth was standing.
Her brows furrowed as she studied Elizabeth’s face. "Oh, look at you, just three days and you look pale already."
She turned back to look at Alexander. "She is taking three days off."
"She wouldn’t dare!" He retorted.
"She would!" Veronica fired back.
"Well, I hired her, not you." He snarled.
Grabbing Elizabeth’s wrist, she fired back. "I could always look for another job for her!"
"Perfect! I don’t know why you asked me in the first place." He yelled, as he watched them walk out of the office.
In the heat of the moment, he felt as if a part of him had left him and he couldn’t understand the feeling.
Before he knew what was happening, his legs carried him as if they were not his, and he ran after them. He could not understand why he was doing that. But he had to make sure that she would come to work tomorrow.
By the time he got outside the office, they were already by the elevator.
"And you." He yelled, pointing at Elizabeth. "I guess Veronica was not the one who hired you. If you still want to keep this job, you better come here early tomorrow."
Veronica hissed and quickly pulled her inside the elevator before she could reply.
"Babe, I know that he is tough and all, but I didn’t expect him to have worked you this hard." Veronica said, with hints of worry in her voice. "You are not coming back here."
"Well, do you have another job for me? I would be glad to leave this place if you do."
"No, I don’t. But—"
"Then I am staying here." Elizabeth cut her in.
"I know you are stubborn; you won’t listen. But you are taking at least one day off." Veronica retorted.
"Okay." Elizabeth muttered as she nodded her head, pretending to have agreed with her.
She couldn’t afford to lose her job, so she wasn’t going to defy her boss.
"By the way, do you know anything about Alexander’s nightmares? I am so curious to know why he has them." Elizabeth asked, as they stepped out of the elevator.
Veronica raised her eyebrow. "How did you know about his nightmares?" A worried look skated across her face. "Did he sleep at the office and have a nightmare?" She asked.
Elizabeth shook her head. "No, at his house."
"How did you know that he—" Veronica trailed off. She raised a questioning eyebrow. "Did you sleep at his house?"
She studied Elizabeth’s face as she awaited a response, hoping her guess was wrong.
"Yes." Elizabeth said and quickly explained before Veronica thought otherwise. "Last night, he got drunk, and I had to take him home. But he didn’t seem well, and that was why I had to stay back and take care of him."
"He has maids." Veronica pointed out. "Why you? Why did you have to be the one to take care of him? And he didn’t even allow you to go home the next morning to freshen up."
She shrugged. "I don’t know; he asked me to stay back."
"Why?" She pressed her lips together. “He just finds joy in overworking his employees.” She sighed. “f*****g Alexander! You can’t overwork my dear Elizabeth." She yelled as she turned on her heels, ready to go and rage war on Alexander.
But before she could walk away, Elizabeth quickly grabbed her wrist. "Let’s go, V. People are staring at us."
"Well, I don’t care." She yelled.
"I do." Elizabeth fired back as she dragged her, and Veronica unwillingly followed her until they were finally out of the company building.
"V, you haven’t answered my question. What do you know about the nightmare?" Elizabeth asked again when they got outside. "The housemaid told me that he has such nightmares every night, and he looked terrified when he woke up."
"Well, I don’t really know the details, but it has something to do with his childhood. Something about being maltreated or so."
"Maltreated? Who would dare maltreat a billionaire’s son? An heir to the company?" Elizabeth wondered out loud as she gawked at Veronica, totally surprised.
Veronica pressed her lips together. "You are my best friend, but I am not sure Alexander would like me spilling his secret. It's one of his insecurities."
"It’s okay if you don’t want to tell me. I don’t care anyway.” She muttered.
But that was a lie; she was totally curious.
"Alright, fine. You should get going. Your parents are worried about you." Veronica told her as she drew her in for a hug.
"Thanks for worrying about me." Elizabeth whispered into her ear. "I love you."
Pulling away from the embrace, Veronica winked at her. "If I don’t worry about you, who would?"
Rolling her eyes, she pushed her lightly, urging her to go. "Oh, come on. Bye."
With a smile curling on Veronica’s lips, she turned on her heels and started walking towards her car.
Before she got to where her car was, she spun around and yelled. "Make sure you stay back home tomorrow; do not go to work. I love you!”
Elizabeth nodded her head in response, a smile curling on her lips, knowing fully well that she wasn’t going to listen to her best friend.
