CHAPTER TWENTY ONE Dakota double-checked she was buckled as Marcus sped through the streets, hastening away from the warehouse, through the industrial district. Generally, her partner enjoyed keeping speed limits, but now they zipped up the cracked and poorly maintained roads, sending up streams of dust beneath their tires. The same dust billowed over their windshield. Ahead, she spotted a tall, rusted fence topped in sagging barbed wire. More than one location had a hole corroded through the fence. Long weeds jutted between gaps in the metal mesh, and beyond the overgrowth, she spotted piles of scrap and old appliances stacked in corridors next to junked vehicles and crushed jalopies. Marcus slowed as they neared the gate to the junkyard, frowning and pointing through the windshield.
