SILAS’S POV
I was beside her, smelling her, feeling her body heat radiating toward me like her skin wanted my touch. It was almost more than I could bear. But I had my ultimate goal in mind. I needed to stay focused on the mission.
I leaned over, whispering to her. “Let me guess, you go for a snack after class, Pumpkin? Want to join me?”
She kept her eyes straight ahead, whispering through gritted teeth. “Go to hell.”
I smirked. It wouldn’t be long before I could bring her into our world, explain the situation, and get her to reject me happily. I just needed to make sure that she wasn’t going to be scared or run and expose shifters to someone who mattered. Professor Ludwig wouldn’t be one to tell, seeing as he was also a shifter.
Why was this school crawling with so many shifters? Was there something I was missing about this place? Did I not get the memo, and was St. Peter’s the place where all shifters were happening?
Staring at Aurora from the corner of my eye, I saw she gripped her pen so tightly that her knuckles were white. She was still angry. I felt a twinge of regret for a brief moment. Looking at her desk, I saw her notebook lying there; I reached over, knocking her notebook to the floor. Juvenile. But seeing her face turn red, I knew it was enough to annoy her. Had I gone far enough today? Did I need to pace myself?
She leaned down, quickly grabbing her notebook. “Can’t you just leave me alone?”
That’s when I saw it. Tears. She had tears in her eyes. I wanted to wrap my arms around her and pull her close. This was torture, having to torture my mate and force rejection. But I couldn’t be mated to a human.

AURORA’S POV
As class ended, I hurried to grab my things, keeping my eyes off Silas. After the notebook incident, he’d cooled it, not speaking another word to me or touching my stuff. I was surprised he stopped at all. But was that just for the day?
I didn’t look back as I almost sprinted out of class, whizzing past Professor Ludwig. I had wanted to stay behind earlier to discuss a project we had created, but today was not the day. I kept my head down, rushing towards Lou’s. I’d wait for Maya and pretend the last hour and a half had been a regular class. Maybe a cookie and some coffee would calm my nerves. Something sweet usually did.
I wasn’t paying attention, thinking about what cookie I’d get, when a hand on my arm pulled me back. I gasped as the hand pulled me, dragging me backward. A hand on my hip held me in place when I finally met the rigid body of the person grabbing me, pulled flat against their front. A mouth pressed to my ear. “Forward.”
Was that…? No way. Whoever it was, he twisted my arm behind my back and dug his fingers into my hip. I was suddenly very self-conscious of my weight. I really shouldn’t have been in the situation, but I couldn’t help it when someone was grabbing my hip. No one ever had me in this position. I moved forward, letting them guide me to a corner, behind a soda vending machine.
Then I was shoved against the wall, still facing away from my assailant. He was breathing heavy now, deranged short breaths. I stayed still. Had no one seen someone grab me and pull me behind the vending machine? Did anyone care?
I closed my eyes as my assailant continued to breathe heavily in my ear. Then I felt it. He pressed up against my backside. He was hard. Oh no. Would someone do this in the middle of the day or on campus? What had we always been taught? Yell fire. I opened my mouth, but a hand instantly clapped over my mouth. “Don’t you dare.”
It was. It was Silas. Why was he here and what was he doing? “I’m going to uncover your mouth and you’re not going to scream. Got it?”
I nodded. As soon as his hand left my mouth, I opened my mouth to let out a scream but his hand instantly covered my mouth again. “Damn it, pumpkin, you just don’t want to listen, huh?”
I shook my head. I’d never listen to him. “Now look. I need you to do me a favor. I need you to reject me. Tell me, ‘I reject you, Silas Bennett.’ And then once you say those words, you never have to worry about me again.”
I narrowed my eyes. What was he talking about? Reject him? Like I hadn’t been rejecting him since day one, trying to get him to leave me alone? “Got it? Do you think you can do that for me?”
I nodded again. Sure, I’d say whatever he wanted to get him to leave my life for good. When his hand was removed from my mouth, rather than screaming, I repeated what he said word-for-word. “I reject you, Silas Bennett.”
His head fell on my shoulder, and both of us were silent. I said it right. Why wasn’t he releasing me and letting me go? “Can you let me go now?”
He groaned. “It didn’t work.”
“What didn’t work?”
He turned his head, his face pressing against my neck. I felt him sniff. What a f*****g weirdo. “Hey, what are you doing?”
“I guess you have to be aware of who and what you’re rejecting.”
“I’m aware I’m rejecting a total asshole. Isn’t that enough?”
He groaned, running his nose along my neck, up to my ear. “It’s not.”
“Could you please explain what you’re even talking about anyway? Why do you need me to say I reject you? I’m pretty sure I’ve rejected you from the moment I laid eyes on you.”
Without prompting, he pressed into my backside, his erection evident. f*****g hell. What was this guy’s problem? And why did it send a thrill straight to my core? I squeezed my eyes shut. “What are you doing?”
“You’re making this so hard, pumpkin.”
He kissed my neck softly, sending chills through my body. Then he stepped backward, releasing me. I stood there, stunned. When I turned around, I saw nothing and no one. He was gone.

SILAS’S POV
I thought maybe if she just said the words, it would work. But obviously not. I still felt the bond, pulling me to her. I’d almost given in, turning her around, then claiming her mouth. Kissing her so hard that she’d forget all about the cruel words I threw her way.
But I had resisted, as I should. Pressing my lips to her neck at all had been a danger. I needed to keep my mouth as far from her neck as possible. I had felt my teeth changing, begging me to bite her, to claim her. I was going mad wanting my mate.
Shoving my hands in my pocket and lowering my gaze, hoping no one noticed me in the sea of students, I was walking towards my car. I was almost there when I heard a voice behind me. “Silas?”
I froze before slowly turning around to see Lucas standing there, a shocked expression on his face. “What are you doing here?”
I shrugged. “Just checking out college life. Nothing special.”
“Oh, that’s cool, man. I didn’t know you were interested in college with how awesome your career is going.”
I offered him a half-smile, trying to appear flattered. “Gotta plan for the future, ya know?”
Lucas nodded. “Yeah, I guess so. Are you busy tonight? I know you’re just here checking out college life, but I bet you haven’t been to a college party like what’s being thrown tonight.”
I’d never been to a college party since I had not attended college. “Are you going stag?”
He shook his head. “Unfortunately not. Aurora is tagging along, and so is her silly friend, Maya.”
I nodded. Another chance I could harass Aurora is if I went to this party. “Count me in. But do me a favor and don’t tell Aurora or Maya that I’m coming.”
Lucas stared at me, trying to read me. “Why is that?”
“Aurora and I didn’t get off on good terms, and I don’t want to ruin her night. Let her come and have a good time, not worried about me.”
“Ah, okay. Thanks, man. Maybe if she gets tipsy enough, I can make my big move on her, ya know?”
My stomach felt like a vice grip, but I forced a smile. “Yeah, man. Totally.”
He slapped me on the shoulder. “Alright, let me give you the meeting details tonight, man.”
I kept the forced grin on my face. “Sure, thanks.”
If he laid a finger on Aurora while she was compromised, he’d lose all his fingers, his hands, and his head. Not that I cared for Aurora. That wasn’t it. It was just doing what was right.
