Elena
After I am done with the work, I quickly plan the rest of the things I need to do before they come back.
I was on my way towards the living room when I saw my uncle sitting on the couch. I hurriedly went towards him with a smile on my face. He noticed me and smiled at me warmly.
" You look happy, child," he said with a small smile.
" Yes," I replied.
" I have some good news to share with you, but first let me serve breakfast. Come on," I said, urging him to follow me to the table.
" What good news do you have early in the morning?" Liam said, coming towards us.
" You will know," I said, and hurried into the kitchen to bring the breakfast to the table. Liam followed me behind and helped me take the dishes outside.
Looking at the table, I realised I hadn't brought out the coffee, so I went back into the kitchen to bring out the coffee.
" You didn't like your birthday present?" Liam asked, coming behind me, making me jump out of my skin.
" I am sorry I didn't mean to scare you," he said quickly.
" Oh no. It's ok. I wasn't paying attention," I said.
" You didn't like it?" He asked. Making me confused.
" What?"
" Your birthday present!!"
" No no no. I loved it, really," I said. He looked at my face for some time and relaxed when he realised that I liked the necklace.
" It was the best gift that I have received until now," I said with a small smile.
" Then why didn't you wear it?" He asked again and I felt bad and didn't want to tell him the truth.
" Well, you know what happened when I received a present on my birthday a few years ago!! I didn't want to lose the necklace either," I explained. He looked at me with sad eyes.
" Come out. I still need to share the news. And breakfast is getting cold," I said and walked past him.
But before I could go out, something happened that made my heart race.
Liam grabbed me by my waist and hugged me from behind. My body went immediately stiff at his behaviour.
" Happy Birthday Elena," he whispered in my ear.
I was too stunned to say anything to him. I just stood there dumbfounded with coffee in my hand. I could hear my heartbeat. He released me from his hold and walked outside without looking back. I let out my breath and was thinking about what had just happened.
I shook my head and went outside to have breakfast with them. It's been a long time since I had a meal with my uncle. I pulled out a chair and sat in it.
" Aunt Lina and Sara went shopping and they told me to inform you," I said before I could share the news.
" Good," the uncle said.
" Happy Birthday, dear," he said and passed an envelope. And I immediately knew what was inside the envelope.
" Thank you," I said with a small smile.
They both started to serve themselves. And served me too. I took a bite of my sandwich. I was starving in the morning from doing all the household work.
" So?" Liam asked, looking at me. I avoided eye contact with him and cleared my throat.
" Remember about the exam I took for my admission to an elite college?" I asked. I couldn't stop the smile that was forming on my face.
" Yes. What about that?" My uncle asked.
" Well! Yesterday I got an email from them. And it said I was selected," I said finally. My heart was bursting with happiness. This birthday couldn't have made me any happier. My uncle put down the cup and smiled brightly at me.
" I knew it. You are going to get selected," he said. He is smiling at me. I looked straight at where Liam was sitting in front of me and was looking at both of us in confusion.
" Did I miss anything?" He asked, putting down the toast he was eating.
" Elena wanted to go to college and she told me she didn't want it anywhere near. And I understand her. So she wanted to give the admission exam for an elite college and I managed to get the form and she took the exam and now she is selected," uncle explained to Liam. His expression changed into a sad one when he heard the whole story.
" By the way, when are you going?" My uncle asked me.
" One week from now," I said.
" That is Sunday then," he said.
" Yes," I confirmed.
" Congratulations child. I couldn't be happier than this," he said honestly. He sighed and shook his head.
" I am truly sorry for what you have been through all these years," he said, looking at me sadly.
" When I brought you here I didn't ever think that you had to go through all these. And I had never imagined that they would become like this," he said and sighed.
" I don't know what to say anymore. And I have never blamed you or anyone for what they did to me. But I didn't like it either. And that's why I decided to leave here for good," I said and gave him a small smile. He took my hand in his and squeezed it gently.
From the corner of my eyes, I saw Liam leaving the dining table quietly without finishing his breakfast. I didn't try to stop him, thinking maybe he was upset that I didn't tell him about all these things when he was being nice to me for all these years. And I felt bad for not telling him. I just didn't think that they would select me. I sighed, thinking that I needed to go to him after I was done with my duty for the day.
" Here," the uncle said, bringing me back from my trance. And I saw he was giving me a card. My eyebrows furrowed at him.
" Why? I don't need anything. You already have enough of me. Please, I can't take this," I said, refusing.
" This is yours," he said. His voice was laced with pain and sadness.
" Huh?"
" I am not giving you anything. This is yours. You are the rightful owner of this money," he said.
" This is the money your parents left for you plus the money from your house that we sold and the company," he said, and I just sat there staring at the card in front of me.
" How much?" I asked, looking up.
" Enough to buy an apartment and support you for five years," he said, and my eyes went wide hearing his words. Then I remembered that my father owned a company back then and, after him, I told my uncle to sell the house and the company and that that took the money a few years back because he was the reason I was not homeless at the age of five. My mouth formed an o.
" Take this and hide it somewhere," he said, giving me the card.
" Do you need anything else?" He asked. And I lost it there. He is such a father figure to me and has been doing all this for me for all these years. I shook my head while sobbing. He stood up from his chair and came to me and pulled me in a hug while rubbing my back soothingly.
" If your parents were still here they would have done much more than what I had done for you," he said. I know he misses his brother as much as I miss them. But he never showed anything.
" You have already done so much for me. And I would be forever grateful to you," I said honestly, pulling away from him.
" I do need one more thing. The email said they needed a guardian confirmation letter," I said, looking up at him.
" Will be done," he said, wiping away my tears.
" Now finish your breakfast and prepare for the new life ahead," he said, sitting back in his chair. We both ate in comfortable silence.
" I will be at my office if you need anything," he said, getting up from the chair. And I nodded at him.
I need to hurry and finish the work before they come back. I stood up from the chair and looked at the card in my hand. I have to put it away. I put the card in my faded jeans pocket and took the dishes into the kitchen. I quickly washed the dishes and was thinking about Liam's behaviour.
He has been acting weird since yesterday. And now he didn't say anything when he heard that I was going to leave, he didn't even finish his breakfast.
In my heart, there is only one possibility and I am not going to think like that. He is my cousin's brother and I am his sister. There is nothing like that. I chanted in my brain again and again.
I quickly discarded my thoughts and started to think about what was left to do. I have done almost everything and there is only one thing left, which is to cook lunch and dinner.
I prepared all the things I needed to cook meals. I am going to make roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and peas, and noodles with broccoli and salad for lunch and dinner with mac and cheese.
I pulled out the vegetables from the fridge and put them in a bowl to wash. I switch on the stove to boil the water for the noodles. I went to wash the vegetables and when I was done I started to chop all the ingredients that I needed.
I am doing it as fast as I can. And the reason I need to talk to Liam. I needed to explain and most of all I needed an answer about his behaviour from the morning.
After three and a half hours, all the dishes were done. I put the dishes aside to cool down and washed the dishes that I used while cooking.
When I was done and satisfied with my work, I went out of the kitchen and saw Liam descending the stairs and, by the look of him, he was going out. That is completely weird of him; he doesn't go out until Friday or Saturday. I walked towards him as fast as I could.
" Liam!" I called his name and he ignored me but I knew he heard me. He opened the door and slammed it. I stood there looking at the door, then I heard the engine of the car roar and he left.
He was not doing this because I didn't tell him that I was leaving, right? If he is, well! Boy, was he wrong? I am not going to rot in this hell forever that was created by his mother and sister.
I turned around and walked towards the laundry room where I left the clothes to wash and now it was done.
I had done all the things around the house and went to my room to place the card in a safe place. I don't want anyone to know about my savings. It will give me a lot of trouble if they know and take it from me.
I went straight to my room after sitting on the couch waiting for Liam. Now I know he isn't going to come back any time soon. If he is angry at me for something like that, then I have more reasons to be angry at him. But I can't do that. Knowing he is one of the few persons who cared for me in this house and helped whenever he had the chance.
I walked through the hallway and towards the basement. The basement is located near the back door of the house. Whenever I feel sad or depressed, I go out in the backyard to spend some time alone in the night sky and the day gives me hope. A hope of a new beginning.
I pushed the door open and went in. I made sure to lock the door behind me in case they returned and decided to go there to torture me more.
I pulled the card out of my pocket and looked at it. Thinking even though they are not here, they are still helping me anyway.
I walked towards the chest dresser where the hole in the wall exists just above the dresser. I slightly tilted the painting to reveal the hole and placed the card in and adjusted the painting in its place.
I sighed and went towards my bed and slumped in. A deep sigh left my mouth.
There is a feeling inside my heart like there are so many things waiting for me outside of this little rabbit hole. I am excited as well as scared. Just thinking about my new life gives me butterflies.
I got up from bed and decided to go through my clothes and the other things that I wanted to bring to the college with me.
I was about to go and check the dresser for my dresses. Since I was going to a college of rich kids, I didn't want to be embarrassed and I also wanted to make some friends. I don't want them to think differently to them. Then it clicked. I sat down again on the bed and picked up a bag from the floor and pulled out the laptop and switched it on.
I began to search for all the details about the elite college and its atmosphere. I want to make sure that I know all about the place where I am going to spend time until my graduation.
I typed in the keywords and the image of the college popped up on the screen. I was awestruck for a moment because it was nothing like the normal college that I saw last time when I was searching for them two years ago. It changed and, in a good way, it looks more luxurious.
I was going through the details of the professor and all the things that I could do over there. I decided to do a part-time job even though I have enough money with me. That way I won't have any distractions. Then I saw some interesting news. The people who gave funds to that college are royals and they don't have a single picture of them. I was about to click on a single picture that was blurry and was taken from quite far away when the door of the basement swung open and immediately looked up to see my uncle standing by the door holding the knob.
" May I come in?" He asked.
" Yes sure," I said and closed the laptop and put it back in my bag. He came in and sat down on my bed in front of me.
" I wanted to give you something since you are going far away," he said, and I noticed a square wooden box in his hand. I waited for him to continue. He forwarded the box towards me and I took it from his hand.
" What is this?" I asked, eyeing the box curiously.
" After the accident, you took all the pictures of your parents thinking that maybe it would cause you pain if you saw them in the picture and you never asked about how they looked when they were alive. There are some things about your parents along with their pictures. I want you to take it when you leave," he said. My eyes went to the box from his face.
" Take your time, ele," he said and got up from the bed. I nodded at him without looking at him.
All these years, apart from my uncle, no one ever mentioned my parents. I don't have any pictures of them with me. The memories I have had with my parents were blurry so I don't remember what they looked like. I was always curious about who I looked like.
Without wasting any time, I opened the box and there was an envelope with a few other things. I put the box aside and opened the envelope and there was a picture of a lovely happy couple in front of me. My mother was the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. She has jet black hair and blue eyes, while my father looked the opposite. He had brown hair and hazel eyes. Now I realise I inherited something from both of them. My hair is black while my eyes are hazel. Looking at the picture I couldn't hold back the tears that are now flowing from my eyes.
I put the pictures back inside the envelope and looked inside the box. There were a lot of things, but a hair clip which I think is my mother's caught my attention. It was embellished with blue stone and was simple yet it looked gorgeous. Gently, I touched the clip and gasped when I heard the sound of the car stopping. Either it was Liam or the devil who came back from shopping. I got up and put the box inside my bag. I quickly wiped my face and ran towards the door.
I turned the knob and it came into my hand.
" Not again," I groaned. The knob broke again.
I ran towards the door when I heard the front door open and shut. I was standing by the stairs and was controlling my breathing when I saw the devil's back. Sara smirked seeing me. I do have the urge sometimes to punch her face. So that she won't be able to smirk again.
" Done already?" She asked for my aunt's attention and she was successful. My aunt snapped in my direction.
" You didn't forget to cook us dinner, right?" She asked, eyeing my face which was red now from running from the basement to here.
" Everything is done," I said quietly.
" Hmm," she hummed and went upstairs.
" Poor girl. You won't be able to go to the prom. I bet someone has even asked you," Sara said, and she followed her mother behind. I rolled my eyes when she was out of sight. I just want to get out of here and go to an elite college, not to the prom.
