“ALESSIA! ALESSIA!” She heard her mother scream her name from the living room like she saw a ghost. She quickly ran out of her room and went to the living room to see her father on the ground. She knows her father has been unwell for some days but she thought he was already getting better, as he showed no signs of the underlying illness. “Alessia stop standing there and help me carry your father to the car” her mom cried as tears were already brimming in her eyes. They drove to the nearest hospital and he was rushed to the ICU immediately. Alessia and her mother sat anxiously in the waiting room expecting to see a doctor come out soon. “What is your relation to the man?” The doctor asked as he marched to the ladies who brought him in. Alessia told him “I am his daughter” with an expectant tone as to what he had to say about her father’s condition. “And I am his wife” Alessia’s mother, Mrs Xanwood replied to the doctor in a calm but inquisitive tone in hopes of hearing good news about her husband. “His cancer has gotten to the last stage of its kind, if something is not done quickly all his organs will shut down eventually leading to his demise”. Her heart ached after hearing those words. She knew money was needed to pay for the treatment of her father but knowing their financial status, medical bills weren’t even in their top priorities. Alessia could barely afford these bills with no job in sight for her and her parents were already retired. It was a hopeless situation for them. “Can we go in and see him?” She heard her mum’s voice breaking her thoughts, The doctor then led them inside, and the state she saw her father in drove her to tears. He looked pale and drained of all life in him, They connected different tubes to his chest, and one tube connected to an oxygen tank was removed from his mouth as they entered the room. Alessia went to stand by the side of his hospital bed while her mother sat on the chair opposite Some minutes passed and Mr. Xanwood coughed, opening his eyes to the white room surrounding him. He looked at his wife and daughter with a weak smile. “How are you, my daughter?” Mr. Xanwood asked Alessia whose eyes already started to form tears. He gently wiped away the tears and told her “I will be fine my dear don't worry”. Alessia wondered how her father could still keep up the positivity he always had but that is one thing she loved about her father. “I am fine”, she replied to him as she stopped herself from letting more tears out. Mr. Xanwood also wiped the tears off his crying wife. He already knew what was happening to him and the bills they needed to pay. “Alessia my beautiful daughter, you know we cannot afford the bills for my treatment”, he said this then started coughing which prompted Alessia to call the doctor, but he stopped her and continued. “My friend, Mr. Miller has a rich son, he could support us financially if you would consider marrying his son, in the same way, becoming his secretary”, he stated. Alessia went silent after hearing the statement her father just made and her mind brought up many questions. “So I would become a billionaire's wife and his secretary at the same time?”, “What about Ashton whom I love and I’m secretly engaged to”, but she had to consider her father’s health. Alessia was still deep in thought when the room door opened revealing a nurse who came to check her father's vitals. Her father looked at her and said “My dear, what are you thinking about?” Without waiting for a response, her mother added. “You are going to marry him right? You know it is in the interest of your father and our family”, her mum said with an expression of worry on her face. Without sparing any thought to her secret engagement she replied “Yes, I will marry him but just for the sake of you Dad”. As she said this, smiles beamed across the faces of her parents. Her parents were in the living room when she heard them call her name. She approached the living room and heard an unfamiliar voice as she came closer she got to know the man as Mr Miller. “You look beautiful Alessia”, the man told her as he scanned her appearance, he didn’t let her reply before he asked her parents “Is she as brilliant as she looks, I wouldn't want an illiterate as her son’s wife and secretary”. She could already tell how arrogant and prideful her future father-in-law was. She expected a retaliation from her parents but she was disappointed at their response. “Yes she is, We trained her up to the final stage of education and she got an outstanding degree in her field of study” her father replied without giving thought to his condescending words. Her mum added, “That is true sir, she will also make a very good wife to your son as she is hardworking and knows her wifely duties”. Her parents didn’t even spare a glance at her after all they said. Mr. Miller and her father chatted while her mother went to bring refreshments for him. She was shocked as to how her parents could still be hospitable to him despite his wealth. Alessia made up her mind to return to her room as Mr. Miller was about to leave, but he stopped her in her tracks. “We will see you first thing tomorrow in the office and from there discuss the wedding plans, Do not be late”, he stated in a haughty tone. Alessia couldn’t help but throw cold glares at him as he turned to leave. She quickly rushed to her room and locked the door. Knocks sounded on her door but she played deaf ears to them. “My dear I know this is a lot for you to take in but this is the best for all of us, especially your father” she heard her mother say from behind the door and her footsteps disappeared into the hallway. Alessia couldn’t stop the tears from rolling out of her eyes as she cried her heart out. She picked up her phone to call her only friend. “Hey Sierra,” Alessia said in a low tone as she answered the phone. After listening to the events happening in her friend's life, Sierra retorted “You should have just run away with Ashton who cares about your father’s health they would have found another way”. Her statement only made Alessia cry harder, “Please stop crying I didn’t mean to be harsh, I just want you to be happy” she tried consoling her sobbing friend. “I know you mean well Sierra I just wish he never had this sickness then I wouldn’t be going through all this but I’m left with no choice now” Alessia stated. “Let’s just hope he’s good-looking and not some grumpy old troll with anger issues,” Sierra said which made Alessia burst into laughter.
