Chapter 1: Prelude
“ The night is dark and full of terrors ” — Game of Thrones.
One word: vampires. We are an ancient race trying to survive in modern times. Our race is dying, ebbed away by a raging war that has lasted for thousands of years.
There used to be many of us, but now, so few of us are left. I’ve read about how large, powerful houses have fallen in the span of a single day. An entire clan, slaughtered mercilessly. One family can be completely obliterated in just one single attack. I’ve even seen some of it occur throughout my life.
It ’ s scary to think that immortals like us can die so easily. And we owe all of this terror to the werewolves, our arch nemesis.
The moon children used to only be able to turn during the full moon. But lately, we ’ ve heard some disturbing reports that say otherwise. As a child, I should be afraid. But instead of cowering in fear, I find myself ignited with curiosity.
How are they able to break out from their limitation? Is it thanks to science, or magic? Is the source of their newfound ability knowledge, or raw energy? Or perhaps something else entirely? And while I am fascinated by this new discovery, I find myself wondering if the same thing can also be implemented on to us.
Like how the werewolves are tied to the moon, the vampires are tied to the sun. We burn under the sun. I’ve tested it myself, and it was painful. The ache disappeared overtime, but the result is there, glaring. I was—am—pathetic. Our kind is pathetic against the sun.
Of course, there ’ s a high probability that the news can be false. But if it ’ s true, then we ’ re dealing with an extremely serious problem. Especially since the kill count is getting larger by the day.
How are these werewolves even able to penetrate the safety of coven houses, anyway? Commonly built underground, covens are made underground in order to protect us from the sun. There ’ s an intricate code that must be followed in order to open our main entrance — albeit old, but efficiently proven since the dawn of time.
Maybe that ’ s where our problem lies, though. If werewolves are able to break in through the entrances, then that must mean our safety mechanism is no longer working as best as it used to. Old tricks will eventually die, and our elders must realize that our defenses are not as good as it used to be.
Again, these breachings can also be caused if there are moles inside the fallen covens. A stupid notion, but not entirely dismissible. I mean, why would any vampire be willing to give out the secret of their hideout to a werewolf? So many theories, but so few vampires who will even bother with this type of critical thinking.
Long story short, if our covens are no longer safe, then there ’ s only one thing we can do. We must build a new one.
