Then, as the wind caught the sails, the ship veered to starboard and she hastily put out her hands to steady herself and then sat down on a strong chair that was battened to the floor. She realised as she did so that in front of her was a mirror and she looked in it with horror. Her straw bonnet was crushed, bent and pressed down on her head, which made her, she thought, look grotesque. She quickly pulled it off and threw it onto the floor, knowing that she could never wear it again. Then she wiped her face with her handkerchief, feeling that it was not only damp, having been confined beneath the blanket, but also dirty from contact with it.
