Lili bitterly strolled down the police station’s staircase. She found it hard to walk. She could’ve taken the elevator, but she had decided to take her time instead, not wanting yet to walk out onto the bustling street and get swallowed by the crowd. She would’ve rather collapsed on one of the stairwell landings and spend the next couple of days there. She wanted to be alone. She didn’t miss the angry, honking drivers or the people rushing off on their way to work. Who knows what kind of monster – like the one that had killed Nicole and Fanni Nyari – could be hiding behind a human face? Maybe the murderer had just sat down smiling next to an unsuspecting girl on the underground…
