‘It is not true, I am dreaming,’ Odetta told herself as the train started off from Calais and she tried to realise that she actually was in France. It seemed so incredible that she was quite certain she was living in one of her daydreams and it was going on for longer than usual. When she had said to her father, “I am going up to The Hall to say ‘goodbye’ to Penelope, who is going to Paris,” he had not answered her. This did not surprise Odetta, because, just like herself, he was very vague when he was concentrating on something else.
