Ashley Lane POV
The next day, our team was scheduled to go home. We took the afternoon flight.
And thankfully, everything was fine, and we managed to get back to our town on time.
My mother picked me up at the airport. She was shocked and worried when she heard what had happened at the race.
"Honey, are you alright? What did he do to you?" Mum asked me; she couldn't hide her anxiety.
"I'm fine, Mum. He pushed me. That's all." I didn't want my mother to worry about me and freak out if I told her about the canines. So, I didn't tell her everything in detail.
"Do you know him? Have you ever seen him?" Mum asked me again.
I shook my head. I really didn't know him.
"Mmmm Ash, what did Twinny say about him?" She asked me again, this time asking about Twinny's opinion.
Why did my mum ask Twinny's opinion about the man?
"Mmm.. Nothing?" I hesitated to answer her.
Twinny went silent after what happened. She didn't even make a comment about the canines. I was sure Twinny saw it, but why didn't she say anything about it?
"Nothing? Are you sure?" Mum looked surprised. She knew about Twinny.
I often shared with her what I had experienced with Twinny. She knew how Twinny's instincts would react to something. Especially when it comes to danger.
"Yes," I answered.
"Mum, I'm tired. Can we go home now?" I asked her. I decided to end our conversation about what happened in California.
"Sure, honey, let me help you with your bag," she said as she took my bag and carried it to her car.
I took a seat in the passenger car, and she took the driver's seat.
"Anyway, congratulations on the win. I'm very proud of you!" Mum said this with a smile on her face. I can see how proud she was.
"Thank you, Mum." I smiled back at her, appreciating her.
Mum drove us back to our house, and soon we were there.
I went straight to my room and got myself clean. After taking some time to unpack my things, I called Brian.
I tried to call him a few times, but his phone was not active.
And then Debbie called me.
"Ash, are you okay? I heard what happened. Are you hurt?" She asked me in concern. She was worried about what had happened.
"I'm fine now," I replied. I didn't want to make her even more worried.
"Why don't you tell me about it? I tried to call you yesterday, but your phone was off," she said.
I know she was worried, and she must have been scared if anything bad happened to me.
"I'm sorry. I was still shocked and forgot to charge my phone." I explained why my phone was off.
After that happened, I totally forgot to charge my phone.
"Do you want me to come over?" she offered me. Debbie probably wouldn't have felt relieved if she hadn't seen me.
"It's okay. It's late already. We will meet tomorrow." I answered her. It was late, and I didn't want to bother her.
"Ashley, did you know who he is? The man who attacked you?"
"No, I don't know him," I replied. I was going to tell her about him, but I hesitated.
"Ash, what's wrong? You can tell me." Debbie could probably feel my hesitation.
"Deb, it sounds crazy... But I swear I saw him with long canines. He was about to bite me. Can you believe me?" I told her, finally. I really needed to tell someone about it. And Debbie would most likely believe me over other people.
And with her, I didn't have to be worried that I would freak her out like my Mum would.
"What? Canines? Are you sure?" She asked me to make sure.
"Yes, canines! The long one, like dogs, tigers, and wolves!" I exclaimed.
"I know it sounds crazy. But Debbie, do you believe me?" I was hoping she believed me. If she didn't, then who would?
Debbie was silent. She didn't laugh or say anything.
"Deb?"
"Ash, I don't know what it's like... But yes, I believe you," she answered after being silent for awhile.
"Really?" I asked because she sounded hesitant.
"Mmm... It sounds impossible, but if you say so, then I believe you. I know you won't make up this kind of thing," Debbie said in more convincing tones.
"Thanks, Debbie." I felt touched. I know what I said sounds weird and impossible, but she believed me. That's all that matters.
"I want to hear your story tomorrow, Ash. We meet at the usual place," Debbie said with curiosity.
I know she can't wait to meet me to tell her everything, and I couldn't wait to see her either.
"Sure. See you tomorrow, Deb!"
"Oh, I almost forgot! Congratulations to the winner! I know you will get first place, Ash! You are awesome!"
"Thank you, Deb! It was a team effort, not only mine." I thanked her.
"Yes, but we can't forget that you took first place either! I'm so proud of you, Ashley!"
"Thank you, Debbie." I smiled wide, feeling so lucky to have friends who support me.
Soon, we ended our phone call because Debbie's mother was calling her and she had to go.
Knock! Knock!
"Ash?" Mum called me from outside my room.
"Yes, mum?" I went to the door and opened it.
"Hon, something came up, and I have to go back to the office for awhile. Are you okay if I leave you? Do you want someone to accompany you? I could ask--"
"No, Mum. I'm fine. You can go; I'll be okay." I told her not to worry. Besides, I'm in my own house. What could possibly happen?
"Are you sure?" Mum asked me once again while her gaze was on me.
"Yes, don't worry. I'm just going to have some rest," I told her to make sure.
"Oke," Mum replied as she sighed deeply. "I made you dinner; it's in the kitchen," she added.
"Okay," I answered with a smile on my face.
"Okay, call me if anything happens, I'll be right home!"
"Okay," I answered.
"I love you, sweetheart." As usual, she gave me a kiss on the forehead before she left.
"I love you too," I replied, and then I closed the door.
After Mum left, I tried to call Brian.
I had not heard from him all day, and I couldn't reach his phone either.
After a few attempts, I decided to go to his house and call a cab.
Soon, the cab came, and I went to his house.
Brian's house was not too far; it only took ten minutes of driving.
I knocked on the door, but no one answered. So I decided to take a look at his room from the window on the side of the house. I really hope I can meet him tonight.
I took a closer look at the glass window to see if he was there. But what I saw in front of me was not what I expected.
Brian was there. But he was not alone.
He was making out with Mandy!
I gasped and stepped backwards.
All of a sudden, I felt a pang in my heart, knowing that Brian had cheated on me!
I thought he really liked me! It turned out...
"I told you before, he—" Twinny said, but I cut her up.
"Shut up! I don't want to hear you!" I was upset, sad, and angry, yet she still said, "I told you before."
"Ash-"
"I don't want to talk about it!" I was really disappointed. I was hoping Brian could help me ease the things I had been through, but it turned out he made them even worse.
I decided to walk away and didn't bother to meet him. At least not at the moment.
I turned around and started to take a fast step out of his yard. I was not careful enough, that my feet got tripped by gravel in his yard, and I fell down inadvertently.
"Aah!" I grimaced, feeling pain in my knees that had hit the gravel.
"Who is it?" I heard Brian's voice from inside the room, and soon I heard the sound of the window being opened.
I tried to stand up as fast as I could, but I was late; Brian had already seen me.
"Ashley?" He was surprised to see me there, standing outside his bedroom window.
I didn't know what my face looked like at that moment, but I tried hard not to cry in front of him.
I looked at him, and then, without saying a single word, I left.
"Ashley, wait!" He called me, and somehow he managed to catch me.
He probably jumped out of the window to catch me. But I didn't give a s**t about him anymore.
"Ash, Babe!" Brian held my arm and turned me around.
"Let go of me!" I yelled at him in anger. I yanked his hand away and looked at him in the eyes.
"Ashley, I'm sorry, I..." He tried to apologise. His face was red, and he tried to hold my hand again.
"Don't touch me, Brian!" I refused and retracted myself.
"You lied and cheated on me!" I said with a shattered voice. I was trying not to cry, even though my eyes were blurred already.
"Babe, I'm really sorry. Let me explain," he begged, trying to calm me down and explaining himself.
"You don't need to explain anything. I saw it for myself. We are done!" I told him before I walked away from him.
"Ashley!" Brian called to me and followed my steps.
"Brian!" Suddenly, Mandy ran into him and held on to his arm, stopping Brian from catching me.
"Ashley!" I still heard him calling me, but I didn't care anymore and continued to walk fast on the pedestrian street in the neighbourhood.
I was so pissed, sad, and angry all at the same time as I moved faster, raising my pace as the emotion got stronger and stronger.
I didn't realise that I was running so fast, until I reached the city park, a few kilometres from the neighbourhood.
I stopped on the track, looking at the beautiful full moon in the blue sky.
My eyes were teary, and I couldn't hold it anymore. My tears were going down as my knees got weak. I sat down on the bench near by, feeling hurt and betrayed.
It was late at night, and the park was quiet. There were only a few people at the park that night. And no one noticed me crying because the bench where I sat was far from the road.
"Ash, he is a jerk. He doesn't deserve you," Twinny said after a few moments of silence.
"I thought he liked me. How can he do this to me?" I said, wiping my tears away.
"Now you know. You deserved better," Twinny said.
"I thought he was different. I really like him." I sighed heavily, realising I was just wasting my time with him and how stupid I was.
Maybe Mandy was right; I was probably just a distraction to him.
"You like him because he is cute and handsome. But that's all."
"Don't worry, we will find our mate. He must be much better than him." Twinny said to soothe me.
"I hope you are right," I responded.
Usually, I would roll my eyes whenever she talked about our mate. But now, I let her be. I even hoped that what she said about our mate was right.
My mind was in a daze, and I really couldn't think of anything else. Suddenly, I heard Twinny growl.
Whats wrong?
"Walk now, Ashley!" Twinny said in a stern voice that shocked me.
"What?"
"Go now! That man is here! Can you sense him?" Twinny said louder. There was a hint of caution and anger in her tone.
That man? I was stiff. My mind went back to the man with the canines. Soon, the strong ginger scent lingered on my nose.
He is here. The man who attacked me is here! Oh God, he found me! How can he possibly find me here?
I stood up right away and looked around. It was quite dark; only the moon shone through the space between the trees.
No one else was there but me, but I heard a twig snap as trees were brushed aside. And his scent was getting stronger.
God, he was close!
I walked fast in the direction where I thought there would be more people on the road.
But before I reached the road, I felt goosebumps on my skin as I heard a low growl behind me and the sound of snapped leaves on the ground.
Oh God, what is going to happen?
I got stiff again and had a strange cold feeling on my back as I could smell his scent stronger and closer.
Twinny growled very hard at him.
"Twinny.." I called her. I was so scared, not only because of the man, but also because of Twinny's growl.
I braved up to look back, and I saw a big black wolf behind me.
Holy s**t! It was bigger than the wolf I saw in the zoo!
I was so scared. I took a few steps backwards as the wolf stepped towards me. Growling, showing me his sharp, long canines.
He growled harder and looked at me as if I were his prey.
My legs were shaking, and I realised he could attack me at any time.
God, I'm going to die! He's going to eat me alive!
"No, he is not!" Twinny growled harder; I could even hear her growl louder, as if it were real. Like the growl coming out of my own mouth.
"I'll take it from here!" Twinny said as I saw the black wolf start to run and jump over me!
And then I felt pain! It was so painful that I thought I had died in a second. It felt like I was shredded into pieces, and there was nothing left of me.
And then I went blank. I was dying! The wolf must have ripped me apart!
