Calla Harlow
“Mum, mum!” I called, stepping into the house, as I shut the door gently behind me.
There was no reply, and I immediately went to see if she was fine in the bedroom, but when I got there, I didn’t see her anywhere in the room.
I began to panic, knowing how crazy my mother could get. If she had sneaked out of the house again, I would need to find her as soon as possible, before she created one of her usual scenes like she always did.
As I was about to leave the room, I heard her say my name, in a very low tone. I looked up, towards the direction where her voice had come from, and saw her sitting in the wardrobe, trembling in fear as her mouth quivered.
“Calla,” she called.
“Mum, what are you doing up there? How did you even get up there?” I asked her, in a very loud voice.
“Stop shouting, Calla. Stop it. They’ll hear you, and they’ll find us if they hear your voice. They want to kill us, Calla. Don’t let them hear you,” She said, in a hushed tone.
I heaved an exasperated sigh. “Mum, listen, no one is looking for us, and they’re certainly not going to find us; neither are they going to kill us,” I said.
She shook her head, refusing to believe what I had said. “You’re lying. They’ll kill us all, just like they killed your father and my brother,” She said, as tears streamed down her face.
My mum had never really gotten over what had happened a decade ago. Her brother and my father had been falsely accused by the Alpha’s brother of treason, and they had been arrested by the guards after evidence, which my father claimed to have been planted, was found on their premises. While my father had escaped to an unknown destination, his brother had been executed, even though he claimed to be innocent till he drew his last breath.
My mother believed my father was dead since he never showed up after he had escaped, and being made practically a pariah by the Pack members, she had devoted her life to a state of solitude and had come up with several conspiracy theories just to prove that her husband and brother had been framed for something they hadn’t done.
All she did was try to prove my father’s innocence, and soon, she began to forget about focusing on her own life and that of her only child. Slowly, she lost her mind and forgot who she really was. Sometimes, she was calm and just spoke to herself, while other times, she made a mess outside of the house and screamed for no reason. When things were really bad, she’d leave the house and roam around the streets, laughing hysterically and spewing what no one could comprehend from her mouth.
A drop of tear slid down my face, and I immediately wiped it with the back of my hand. Looking around, I saw the high stool she had probably used to climb up lying at the foot of the wardrobe, which meant that it was possible that she had kicked the stool away after climbing up.
I knew it was pointless to argue with her or try to persuade her into coming down. I picked up the stool and made it stand so that she could easily come down from her so-called hiding place whenever she felt she was ready.
“I have things to do, mum. When you’re sure the guards are no longer looking for us, you can come down,” I said, and turned my back, prepared to walk away from the bedroom.
“Aren’t you going to hide, too?” She asked before I left.
I turned back around and gave her a small smile. “I will hide somewhere else,” I lied.
“Good. Go, go, go. Don’t let them see you,” She said, still in a whisper.
I nodded my head, then I departed from her presence, with the smile disappearing slowly from my face.
Knowing fully well that if I ate now, there would be nothing left to eat in the evening, I just decided to work on the assignment Miss Andrea had given to us, which the Class representative had made sure he distributed before I left school when he saw me struggling with my books that had gotten badly wet, thanks to Adan's friends, who seemed to hate me for literally no reason.
I picked up my laptop and decided to begin my work on it when, to my greatest dismay, I discovered that it was broken again.
“Oh no!” I exclaimed, remembering that I was two weeks away from collecting my salary at the confectionery store where I worked. It was my day off, and I already had my remaining salary budgeted for other things, and it wasn’t even enough.
“How the hell am I supposed to repair this laptop for the umpteenth time in two months, when I don’t have money?” I wondered aloud.
The laptop had never gone through a full month without crashing or breaking down. It was very old, and I was grateful to the old woman that once lived next door, who had given it to me when she was moving to another city with her family, to show her appreciation to me for taking care of her cat whenever she wasn’t around.
I had said “thank you" to her so many times that day, not knowing I was bringing another problem into my life. I never knew it was another one of those things that were going to finish the little money I was able to make from working two jobs, even as a student.
I didn’t have any friends, but I decided to swallow my pride and plead with Eugenia, a sassy and rude girl with a very loud mouth. Her father was my boss at the confectionery store, and whenever I asked her to help me with something, she always asked me questions about why my family couldn’t do that for me. At the end of the day, she’d give me what I needed on a condition, and still go ahead to inform whoever cared to listen that she had done something nice for me.
However, I didn’t have a choice but to ask her, since I couldn’t ask any of the members of my Pack, who treated me like an outcast and didn’t want to have anything whatsoever to do with me. Eugenia was a human being, and she didn’t know about the werewolves in the city or the real story of my life, and that was why it was better to ask her for help than those who were like me.
I stood up and decided to go have small talk with Eugenia. I was so thankful that I hadn’t changed the clothes I had worn to school yet, as it would have been so stressful to begin looking for something else to put on.
When I got to the store, I was lucky to find her there before she went for her private tutorial class, and her lips gave way to a wide grin as soon as her eyes caught sight of me.
“Hey, Calla. What are you doing here? Wasn’t today supposed to have been your day off?” She inquired, expressing fake concern.
I faked a smile, as I walked toward her. “Yes, Eugenia. However, I needed to see you concerning something,” I said.
She laughed, in a mocking manner. “What is it you want this time around?” She asked.
“I never said I wanted anything,” I said, already regretting why I came to see her in the first place.
She clicked her tongue. “Tch. Stop lying, Calla dear. I know you want to beg for something, as usual, since you claim to have no father or mother...”
“I never said I didn’t have a mother,” I interrupted.
“Having a lunatic for a mother is akin to having no mother at all, you dummy. Now, since I am very fortunate to have been blessed with two parents and I really do feel sorry for your plight, I may be willing to help you,” she said.
I ignored the silly comment she had made, even though I felt really hurt by her words, and focused more on what sounded positive. “You’re going to help me?” I asked.
“No. I may be willing to help you, but on one condition,” she said.
I rolled my eyes, not in the least surprised. She opened the backpack that was loosely hanging from her shoulder and handed some books over to me.
I collected them and heaved a sigh. “You want me to do your assignments?” I asked, with my shoulders drooped.
She nodded her head, in the affirmative. “Yes, I do. You already know how this goes, thankfully. Now, what is it you came to beg for?” She asked.
“I need your laptop for an assignment,” I said.
“Oh. That’s not a problem at all. You can have it,” She said, bringing it out of her bag and giving it to me.
I beamed. “Thank you so much,” I told her.
“You’re welcome, Calla. Meanwhile, I also have an essay I need to complete on the laptop. Will you be a darling and do that for me?” She asked.
I nodded my head, rapidly. Of course, I was going to do anything to ensure I did my assignment, had a perfect score, and got a scholarship to study medicine. “Yes, I will,” I said.
“No, you won’t,” a familiar voice said, which came from behind me.
I turned around, and while my mouth opened wide in surprise on seeing Adan standing right behind me, my eyes nearly popped out of their sockets.
I hiccupped, as he came closer to me, with the fragrance of his cologne filling the air.
“You’re so pathetic. Don’t you have even a little pride?” He asked, and before I could give him a response, he took the books and laptop which belonged to Eugenia away from me and dropped them heavily in her hands.
Eugenia appeared stunned and looked really confused. “Who...who are you?” She stuttered.
“I’m someone who can boldly tell you to go f**k yourself, and keep your ancient laptop to yourself,” he said, and before I could comprehend what was going on, he took me by the hand, and began to pull me away.
“Stop! Where are you going to? You’ll regret this, I swear,” Eugenia yelled, as Adan led me out of the store.
My heartbeat increased fourfold, and for no reason, my teeth seemed to be clattering, and I remained speechless and unable to say a word, overwhelmed by the warmth of his hand upon mine. It was a feeling that I had never felt before, and I couldn’t help but allow myself to be led away by him, without bothering to put up even a little resistance.
