“Ha! I’ve already seen it.” Marlow’s gloating made Scarlett clench her teeth but she couldn’t think of anything she could do.
She couldn’t fight against him. Her cell phone was taken by him. She managed to maintain her dignity and tried to win on morality.
So she changed to use a cold tone and said, “I don’t care how you came in, but this is my house, please leave here.”
Marlow glared at her and said, “Your house? How do you prove it? I’ll say that it’s my house.”
Scarlett’s shapely eyebrows raised and she said, “Why should I prove it? I moved here three years ago, though I don’t often live here. You can ask the neighbors if you don’t believe me. They all know me.”
“Haha. That’s interesting. If you want to prove it that way, I can tell you that all the neighbors know me too.” Marlow started to feel that this had become interesting. He took out a cigarette and lit it slowly before he said that.
“Nonsense! How could they know you…Do you dare to ask them?” The idea came to her in a flash of inspiration.
She thought she was smart. If this bastard went with her to see the neighbors, she would be saved.
She couldn’t fight the guy herself, but if with the neighbors, they could definitely bring him to the police.
“Sure. Why not?” Marlow replied lightly.
“Okay. Give me one minute. I’ll go change my clothes.”
Marlow waved his hand impatiently, signaling her to be quick.
Scarlett’s expression was still cold, but she was exhilarated inside.
‘Scum! You wait!’ said her inside.
In a short while, Scarlet came out again in a simple white T-shirt and a pair of cute denim cropped pants.
The two of them got out of the house together.
The first door Scarlett knocked on was the house to their right. It’s Uncle Lee’s house.
The reason why Scarlet picked it was because not only Mr. Lee was tall and robust, but also he had two sons who took after their father in size and shape. She was sure that as long as she screamed, the Lee’s would make Marlow see his own blood.
Knock, knock, knock.
“Who is it?” Mr. Lee’s voice sounded from inside.
“It’s me, Scarlett.” Scarlett was excited when she heard his voice.
The door was opened and a bruiser showed up. He said smilingly, “Hi, Scarlett…”
As Scarlett just was going to scream out for help, her Uncle Lee saw Marlow behind her and widened his eyes in surprise. “Marlow! Are you Marlow? When did you come back?”
Marlow put on a smile and came up to reply him, “Uncle Lee, how are you? I just came back today. You look great, Uncle Lee. How is Auntie Jenny? Are Jimmy and John at home?”
They started to catch up friendly and left Scarlett in a state of confusion.
‘What the hell is going on? Is this really his house?’
Uncle Lee’s wife Jenny heard the sound and came to the door too. When she saw Marlow, she also talked with him warmly and asked about some people they both knew.
In the end, she even said with reddened eyes, “Marlow, if your mother saw that you had such a beautiful wife, she would be very happy. Alas, she was such a nice person. Why would God let her have cancer and die so young? It’s not fair…”
Uncle Lee detected Marlow was low in spirit at his wife’s words. He then blamed her, “Marlow just came back. Why would you mention this? You are such a turn-off!”
“I…Uh…” Scarlett who stood aside couldn’t get in a word. Uncle Lee seemed to know this scum so well. Could she scream for help in this situation?
As she was still wondering what she could do, Marlow wrapped his arm around Scarlett’s shoulders and said with a smile, “I just came back today and Scarlett told me that your family had been very kind to her and had helped her a lot these years when I was away. She dragged me to say thanks to you. I told her that Uncle Lee and Auntie Jenny are just like my family, but she still insisted that we had to invite you to dinner.”
Scarlett was furious at Marlow but under that circumstance, this seemed to be a relatively reasonable explanation. So she had to force a smile, ignored the hand on her shoulder and said in agreement, “Yes. Uncle Lee, Auntie Jenny, let’s go out to have dinner. It’s my treat.”
“No, thank you. You see, Jenny has already prepared the dinner. We can’t go out to eat today. It’s very nice of you, Scarlett. We and Marlow’s family have been neighbors for over ten years. We saw him grow up. He used to hang out with my two sons…”
Scarlett tried hard to maintain the smile on her face and nodded frequently, but her heart sank at the same time.
When they got back to the house, they seemed to both understand what had happened.
Marlow recalled her mother before she died. She held his hand and said pleased, “Marlow, I can leave this world without worry now. You have to treat her well, okay?”
Marlow was puzzled and asked his mother who she was talking about, but she kept silent and smiled.
She then told him that if he left the city, he could ask Uncle Murphy to help him take care of the house.
Likewise, Scarlett also lost in her memory. Before she moved to this house, her father took her to a hospital to see an old friend of his. It was an amiable middle-aged woman. Though she was very sick, everyone could see that she used to be very pretty.
That woman held her hand and asked her a lot of questions. She looked at her lovingly that for a moment she was worried if his father would make her become her adoptive daughter.
Two months after that meeting, her father gave her a key and told her about this house. He said that she could have the house cleaned and come to live here whenever she wanted.
When she came to this house for the first time, she saw a picture of that woman. She didn’t give it much thought. She thought that as she was her father’s old friend, she gave the house to him before she died.
Now she realized that that woman was Marlow’s mother, and she was looking at her future daughter-in-law when they met in the hospital.
At this moment, both Marlow and Scarlett understood what had happened. Their parents decided their marriage secretly a long time ago and were waiting for this day to come.
Since everything was clear, Marlow smiled and said, “So do you believe me now? Do I need to show you the paper of ownership of this house?”
“It’s not a big deal that you own this house,” Scarlett glared at him angrily and said.
“Right. It's not a big deal, but since I am the owner, I have the right to kick you out. Miss Murphy, please get out of here. I don't welcome you. I don’t want my future wife to see me live together casually with another woman. I have my reputation to protect.”
“Scum! You have a reputation as a scum,” rebuked Scarlett, but her mind raced quickly.
Her father had cut off her retreat. She was bound together with this bastard in this house.
Though she didn’t want to stay here, there was nowhere she could go now. So she had to find a way to stay.
