CHAPTER 1
JESSICA Today is the last day of my dance rehearsal with Wesley for our birthday party tomorrow, so I want to look good in case Wes is my mate. I didn't care about the other men in the party, the only one matters was Wes. I scanned the dresses in my closet and took out the satin knee-length powder-blue sleeveless dress with a keyhole-type neckline. I slid into it, amazed at how it hugged my body's curves perfectly. Some cleavage was showing, but not in a slutty way. Exactly the way I liked it. To finally complete my outfit, I grabbed the silver dancing shoes. After getting dressed, I went to my dresser and put on light makeup, just enough to get that fresh kind of look. Satisfied with my look, I went straight to the ballroom. I hope Wes will find me attractive today. *** When I arrived in the ballroom, I placed my cell phone on the grand piano and decided to walk around the ballroom while waiting for Mom, Wes, and the pianist to arrive. As I turned towards the entrance, I saw Wes standing. He was wearing a black tuxedo that complemented his tan skin. His short brown and neatly combed hair emphasized his chiseled jawlines, tall, pointed nose, and enticing hazel eyes. But what made him more attractive was his close-trimmed beard, which made him look more manly. We were both eighteen, but his physical features matured pretty fast. Was it that stressful to become the successor of the Blood Moon Pack? Lately, I've heard the pack members talk about how Wes's father, Alpha Cayden, succumbed to his madness. At a slow pace, Wes walked in my direction. "You look lovely, Jes," he said when he stood before me. "You look great, Wes." I looked down at my dress. Wes's outfit made me look underdressed for the occasion. "Mom didn't tell me it was a dress rehearsal," I continued. "It's my own decision to dress up today," he replied in a low voice. Wes never spoke with me in such a manner. He was always friendly to me. Never heard of him talking to me in a deeply deep-toned voice. It made my body weak, and all I wanted was to collapse in his arms. But why was he acting like this? Did he like me now? But tomorrow, we'll be nineteen. The age when the moon goddess will grant us our mates. Please, Wes, don't make things more complicated for me. I've been struggling to hide my feelings for three years. Don't make me lose it. Wes offered his hand. "May I have this dance?" "But the pianist and mom aren't here yet," I said. "Please, Jes." Wes requested, along with a pleading look in his eyes. This is really weird! But then I thought of it. It was my chance to get closer to him and to know what it felt like to be in his arms with only the two of us. "I'd be delighted to." I went along with his game and took his hand. Wes pulled me closer and slowly wrapped his free arm around my waist. So close! The feeling of his hard chest against mine made me nervous, and it scared me that he would feel how hard my heart was beating. "Follow my lead." He took a side step, and I did as I was told. I followed his lead and ended up swaying together to a piece of imaginary music. We held each other's gaze. It was a dream come true for me. I always wanted Wes to look at me this way, the woman he admired. "You look stunning, Jes. This shade of blue suits you." Wes's compliment made my knees wobbly and threw me off balance, but Wes's arms immediately caught me before I completely fell. Our gazes locked. A hint of desire flashed in his eyes, but he blinked them away. Wes helped me straighten up, then his hands moved upward, skimming my bare arms. He stopped when he reached my face and gently pressed his palms on my cheeks. His following action made my heartbeat race. I noticed his face getting closer, and his cool breath was fanning my face. "Wes," I whispered, calling his attention, but he kept moving. His bottom-heavy lips brushed mine before he pressed on them hard. It felt so soft and warm, and somehow, how he kissed me made me think he wanted to kiss me badly, and I loved it! Savoring the moment, I parted my lips. I wanted more! I wanted to taste him, and gladly, Wes did not fail me. He reacted fast. His tongue invaded me, and I willingly welcomed it. His kiss turned passionate. I could clearly feel the velvety texture of his tongue as he moved it slowly in my mouth. I'd never kissed a man before, so I wasn't sure if I was responding correctly to every movement of his tongue. May this experience last forever. Please, moon goddess, let this all be mine! His hands traveled down my waist, and mine found their way around his neck. Without breaking the kiss, he slowly walked forward until my back touched the wall. Our kiss grew deeper and deeper, as if Wes was trying to claim me. Did he find out that I like him, and this is his way of telling me he likes me, too? Wes's lips found my neck sucked on the marking spot. "Wes..." I moaned. My moan fully awakened Wes's desire. A hard bulge pressed against my sensitive part. Instinctively, I wrapped one leg around his waist, and that bold move made me feel his hardness more since my dress slid down to my hips, leaving a thin fabric as the only barrier between our flesh of desire. My body felt like it was on fire, making me want to get rid of every piece of cloth covering me. Wes buried his face in my hair and inhaled deeply. "f**k!" he groaned, then suddenly, Wes pulled away. He gently placed my leg down and wiped my lips with his thumb. Damn it! Why did he stop? "I'm sorry, Jes," he apologized, his eyes on my lips. "It's okay," I replied quickly before he thought I got offended. He had no idea how much I enjoyed it, and I wouldn't want him to stop. I tried to pull him closer with my hands that were still around his neck, but he resisted and remained stiff. "No, Jes. I'm really, really sorry, and I hope one day you can forgive me." His voice was low, and I could see despair gleaming in his eyes. I seized his face between my hands. "What's wrong, Wes? Tell me," I demanded. Wes grabbed my hands, dragged them down to my side, and repeated the same words, "I'm sorry." He turned and strode in the same direction where he entered, but I grabbed his wrist before he could go further. "Sorry for what, Wes?!" My voice thundered. "You kissed me, and now you will just leave me without saying anything? What's going on, Wes? Tell me!" I demanded. Wes turned. "I should never have kissed you," he muttered. His voice was cold. The atmosphere in the room suddenly became uncomfortable, and I couldn't help but be mad at Wes. How could he embarrass me like this?! "Never?" I scoffed. "I never thought you could be a total jerk, Wes," I continued. I would like to say many things, but I was afraid that we might end up fighting and ruin our day tomorrow. "I said I'm sorry, okay?!" He snapped. Stunned by his reaction, I let go of his hand and stepped backward. "What is wrong with you?" Tears were building up in my eyes, so I took a deep breath, opened my eyes widely, and then blinked twice to hold back my tears. It would be pathetic to cry in front of Wes after what he did. Guilt sliced across his face. He moved forward, but reflexively, I stepped back like I was trying to distance myself from an enemy. "Jes," he called in a nonchalant voice. This is different from the Wes I knew. The Wes I knew would never shout at me. This conversation must be cut short. "We better skip the rehearsal today and forget everything that happened. It's not just my birthday. It's yours, too. Let's just rest well today and look forward to meeting our mates tomorrow," I said calmly. Wes nodded. "Goodbye, Jes," his tone indicated no argument. He turned around immediately after saying goodbye and went straight to the door without sparing a glance. My muscles stiffened, completely dumbfounded at what had happened. What's going on, Wes? What are you apologizing for?
