Chapter Twelve Rigger stood behind the rope barricade with Katrina and Rachel, watching the B-17 taxi in from the runway and pull to a stop, fifty yards in front of them. Four crewmen jumped from the World War II bomber and went through their routine of chocking the wheels and inspecting the aircraft. Soon they lined up in front of the wing, then the pilot and co-pilot dropped from a door in the belly of the plane. The four men came to attention, and one of them snapped a salute for the two officers. One officer returned the man’s salute, and Rigger was surprised to see it was a young woman. He and the other spectators applauded as the two came toward the rope to greet the sightseers. Rigger gazed at the beautiful aircraft, hoping they’d allow people inside to see what it was like. B-
