It was a Friday afternoon in April at the end of the fourth week of Ryker’s stay. Ryker had gone to see the doctor and was sure he wouldn’t have to wear the boot anymore. Though he’d have to do physical therapy and ease into his normal activities, he would be able to handle most things by himself now, which meant his time with me would soon be over. And while I was happy for him, my heart hurt. When he came into the office, walking close to normal, I wanted to cry. He stopped at my desk. “Hey, boot came off.” He wiggled his foot and I scowled. “It was inevitable, right?” I cleared my throat and grabbed an invoice. “Just leave the key under the mat at the front door when you’re done moving out. I’m sure you want to get back to your regular life as soon as possible.” I worked on my compute
