Chapter 5:

This man had given her one million USD... The car stopped in front of the registration office. Louis opened his eyes, seemingly unwilling to look at her, and coldly said, “I don’t want to marry you. You know what tricks you’ve used. You’ve manipulated my grandparents, making it so I have no choice but to marry you. The Sherwood family is like a leech, always greedy. Don’t think you’ll get anything from me. The position of Mrs. Atcentret will never be yours.” His voice dripped with sarcasm as he handed her a document: “Sign this agreement. We will divorce automatically in one year.” Nancy gripped the pen tightly, her knuckles white, and signed her name. Louis was slightly taken aback when he saw that she didn’t cry or make a scene, but obediently signed the agreement, before saying, “Get out of the car.” Nancy opened the door and got out. The car drove away arrogantly. Nancy watched it disappear from her sight, just like she had watched his car disappear when she waited for the bus four years ago. But now her feelings were fresh. Back then, she felt excited; now, she felt only helplessness. How could that man be Louis... Nancy visited a bar and enjoyed some drinks. She wasn’t good with alcohol, so she drank little, just enough to ease her mind. That night, after leaving the bar, she went to the Sherwood family cemetery. “Mom, I got married today. Look, here is my marriage certificate. The man who helped me back then is on it. Mom, how could it be such a coincidence that he is Chuppie’s biological father...” The man she couldn’t forget for four years. Nancy sat on the steps, smiling, holding a bottle of rice wine, staying at the cemetery until ten at night. The cemetery guard approached: “Miss Lesli, it’s time to leave. It’s too late. I’ll escort you out.” Nancy stood up: “Mom, I’ll come visit you again in a few days...” An icy wind blew, and she wrapped her coat tightly around herself, calling a taxi. “Miss, where to?” Nancy didn’t know where to go. Where could she go now? She mumbled, shaking her head: “I don’t know. Driver, I’ll pay you, just drive around for a while...” The driver looked at her, sensing something off, especially since she came from the cemetery. After driving around, he quickly dropped her off. Nancy crouched by the roadside, burying her head in her knees, her shoulders shaking. She clutched a red booklet tightly in her hand. Why did Louis, that unconscious man, have to be the man from that night... No wedding, no ring, nothing. Nancy had just married Louis. Many people in high society laughed at her, mocking her for not even having a proper wedding, showing that Mr. Atcentret didn’t care for “Wendy” at all. Regarding this matter. Mr. Tony Atcentret felt sorry for the Sherwood family but couldn’t force his grandson, who finally agreed to marry Wendy. So, he compensated the Sherwoods more in business dealings. Norman felt a natural delight. The absence of a wedding didn’t bother him, as Nancy was simply a girl from a small town. Nothing was more important than business interests. Every Friday, the Atcentret family had dinner together, a family tradition. Louis threw a ring at her: “Put it on. In front of my grandparents, say nothing unnecessary.” Nancy looked at the ring in her hand, dazzling and beautiful. Gorgeous and enchanting. It was something all girls longed for. But to her... It was just for show. Nancy lowered her head, hiding the disappointment in her eyes. She put the ring on and followed him. Seeing him standing at the entrance to the Atcentret house, she wondered what he wanted to do. Looking down at his ring finger, he was wearing a diamond ring matching hers. Nancy clenched her fists tightly. She knew well that the handsome and elegant man before her looked at her with undisguised disdain. “What are you standing there for, waiting for the servants to see?” Louis said indifferently, making Nancy understand. She slowly placed her hand on the crook of his arm, holding onto him as they walked into the Atcentret house. They looked incredibly intimate and loving. Just like any newlywed couple. It was Nancy’s first visit to the Atcentret house, meeting Mr. Tony Atcentret and Mrs. Linda Atcentret. Both were very kind. Mrs. Linda Atcentret held her hand, pulling her to sit on the sofa: “Wendy, it must have been hard for you. This boy is so stubborn, I don’t know what that Miss Richart did to him.” “Grandma... I don’t feel it’s hard. I’m fine.” Nancy spoke while glancing upstairs, watching the man’s figure disappear. Louis followed Mr. Tony Atcentret to the study. Mrs. Linda Atcentret knew Louis’s character well: “Wendy, if you ever feel wronged, tell me. I’ll handle him.” “Thank you, Grandma.” “Wendy, there’s no need to be so polite.” The old lady was thrilled, liking Nancy more and more, appreciating her appearance and manners, liking her gentle and elegant demeanor. She couldn’t understand why her grandson was so infatuated with that singer Irene... That evening, after the servant had finished cooking, Mrs. Linda Atcentret noticed Louis and Mr. Tony Atcentret were still upstairs, so she asked Mrs. Lam to call them, while pulling “Wendy” into the dining room. “Wendy, these are Mrs. Lam’s specialties. Make sure you eat plenty.” “I will, Grandma.” Nancy looked at Mrs. Linda Atcentret. When she was young, her grandmother had cared for her and her mother the same way. After her grandmother passed away, her father brought Sandra to their home. Her mother divorced her father. Nancy’s eyes reddened as she quietly wiped her tears. When she looked up, Louis had already entered the dining room, sitting beside her. Having the whole family together for dinner made the elderly couple thrilled. Nancy drank a bowl of porridge, not eating much. Suddenly, a pair of chopsticks placed a piece of sweet and sour ribs into her bowl. Nancy was stunned, seeing the man’s hand in front of her. Louis’s voice was gentle, just like on her most desperate day: “Eat more.” Nancy knew he was just putting on a show for Mr. Tony Atcentret and the old lady. She looked up, smiling: “I’m full.” Then she picked a piece of fish, deboned it, and placed it in his bowl: “You eat more.” Mrs. Linda Atcentret watched their intimate behavior and nodded at Mr. Tony Atcentret. Nancy noted Mrs. Linda Atcentret’s expression, lowering her head to eat the ribs. She glanced at Louis, seeing his strong jawline from this angle. That night, they stayed at the Atcentret house. Nancy lay on his enormous bed, listening to the water running in the bathroom. She removed the ring from her finger and placed it on the nightstand. The bathroom door opened, and Louis stepped out, wearing only a gray towel around his waist, his hair still wet, water droplets sliding down his well-defined chest. Nancy sat up, biting her lip: “Mr. Atcentret, maybe I should sleep on the sofa.” She saw the disgust in his eyes, his lips curling into a smile. He wouldn’t want to share a bed with her... Louis squinted, grabbed her wrist, and threw her onto the bed, his body pressing down on her, his mint-scented breath enveloping her. Nancy instinctively struggled. He sneered: “You’ve spent all this effort on my grandparents, making them happy, just for this moment, right? Now, you’re pretending? Fine, I’ll satisfy you.” When he tore her nightgown. Nancy closed her eyes, her lashes trembling. His movements were rough, not gentle, his kiss stealing her breath, one hand pinning her wrists above her head, his kiss moving down her jaw. Suddenly, she felt a sharp pain in her collarbone. Nancy frowned, letting out a soft “shhh.”
