Locked in the pack-house, Nadia's days were filled with pain, both emotional and physical. She had been arrested and thrown into the prison at Alpha Killian's pack house.
They planned to starve her to death as punishment for the death of Julian. The loss of her mate and rejection had brought immeasurable pain to her. It had been unbearable and, for the past three days, she had done nothing but cry until she felt numb.
The pain she had endured throughout her life seemed insignificant compared to what she was feeling now.
Even though Julian did not show any form of attraction towards her. She was already in love with him. She fell in love the moment she realised he was her mate.
Sitting down in the cell room, she pulled her knees against her chest, allowing tears to flow freely down her cheeks.
"Why?" She gazed openly at the thin air, wondering what kind of wolf she was born with. Why her? Why would her inner wolf bring her so much misery? "Why did you have to kill him?"
Tears streamed down her face as she questioned Gena's actions. "I hate you Gena!" She yelled, her voice laced with anguish.
The next day, Nadia's eyes remained closed as the room lay in silence. She was not sleeping, her eyes and body were tired. Her mind was blank.
Suddenly, she heard footsteps approaching, followed by a faint calling of her name. Nadia's eyes opened in surprise.
She opened the hinged door viewer to see Rena standing in front of her.
"Rena, what are you doing here? How did you get here?"
"I came with my dad. The Alpha called for a meeting. It's about you", Rena replied.
Nadia sighed deeply. "I guess they want to discuss how to get rid of me."
"It has already been decided. They plan to starve you to death. They fear your wolf and would rather deprive you of food than confront her directly."
"Sounds like a good plan."
"No!" Rena yelled but realised herself and reduced her voice. "No, Nadia. You have to run away."
"Look around you, Rena. How am I supposed to do that?"
"Allow your wolf to take over so you can both get away."
Nadia's anger flared at the mention of her wolf. "Never! She'll never come out again! I hate her!" She exclaimed, frustration written all over her face.
Rena pleaded, "If you stay, you're going to die. You are the only friend I have in this town. I don't want to lose you."
Just then, the sound of approaching footsteps reached their ears. Panic washed over Nadia. "Get out of here, Rena. I don't want you to get into trouble because of me," she urged.
"I'll be back…Just be alright, okay?"
Nadia nodded in affirmation as she watched Rena sneak away. She quickly returned to her sitting position.
The cell door creaked open, and Luna Victoria entered with eyes blazing in anger. She stared at Nadia, who managed to get on her knees, trembling with fear.
Tears streamed down Nadia's face as she choked out, "I'm so sorry, Luna Victoria."
"Sorry?" Luna Victoria's voice was filled with rage as she confronted Nadia. "Will sorry bring back my boy? What have we done to you to deserve this? Is it a crime to reject a mate?"
"I'm really sorry. I wish I could take everything back."
Luna Victoria couldn't hold back her tears any longer, allowing them to flow freely. "I should have protected my son, but I failed. This time, l'm not going to fail at getting revenge on the bastard that killed him."
The insults Luna Victoria were heaping on Nadia did not get to her. All she could see was a woman who just lost her only child, all because of her."
With a heavy heart, Nadia murmured, "l would gladly give my life in return for Julian's. I didn't mean to kill him. I'm so sorry."
Luna Victoria looked disdainfully at Nadia, and reached into her pocket, pulling out a knife.
"Here, take this and stab yourself with it."
The unexpected gesture caught Nadia off guard, but she accepted the knife from Luna Victoria.
"I'm waiting."
Nadia's hands trembled as she held the knife, her tears falling onto the cold, hard ground. She gazed at the sharp blade, contemplating the unthinkable.
With tears in her eyes, Nadia looked directly into Luna Victoria's tormented eyes. "Will my death bring him back?"
"It would give me peace of mind," She replied coldly.
Nadia was on the verge of plunging the knife into her chest when the cell door was suddenly pushed open, and Alpha Killian stormed in, yelling at her to stop.
Alpha Killian firmly took the knife from Nadia's trembling hand.
"What are you doing here, Victoria?" he inquired, his voice laced with authority and concern.
"I'm here to deal with my son's murderer. I cannot wait for her to starve to death. I want her dead right now."
Alpha Killian leaned closer, his voice hushed as he whispered to her, "Think with your brain. What if her wolf attacks you?"
"I do not care!" Luna Victoria blurted out.
Alpha Killian let out a deep sigh, his voice filled with grief. "My Luna, she will pay for our son's death with her life. But let us mourn our son first. Once we finish the funeral rites, you can do anything you want with her. I promise you, I won't intervene."
Luna Victoria's eyes locked onto his. "You promise?"
Alpha Killian affirmed, "With my position as the Alpha."
He led his Luna out of the cell room, instructing a guard to lock the room and station in front of the door.
Nadia lay on the cold, hard floor, desperately trying to find a moment of rest. Her weak attempts at sleep were interrupted by the guard's voice.
"Someone is here to see you," the guard announced.
Nadia groaned as she forced herself up, her body aching with exhaustion. She moved toward the cell door and opened the hinged peephole to see her foster father standing on the other side.
"Why are you here?" Nadia asked, her tone icy.
He didn't react to her coldness. His face was tense and filled with fear.
He requested a private moment with Nadia, initially met with resistance from the guard. After some persuasion, the guard reluctantly left them alone.
As soon as they were alone, Nadia's father pulled out a small box he had concealed when he entered. He handed it to Nadia, explaining that the box contained a picture and the address of her biological uncle-her mother's brother, who lived in a town miles away from their current location.
Nadia couldn't believe her ears. "Where did you get this? Don't tell me you had this information all this while?"
Her father shook his head. "Someone gave it to me today. I don't know who he is, but he threatened to kill me, and my wife if I didn't help you get out."
"Help me..get out of here?" Nadia asked, surprise laced all over her face.
Her father nodded. "Yes. The Alpha and the others are in a meeting right now. We have to hurry. I'Il unlock the door and take out the guard on my way out. The rest is up to you. Just make sure not to get caught. Get as far away from here as possible."
He handed Nadia some money, then proceeded to unlock the cell.
"How did you get the key?"
"I'm a locksmith, remember?"
It was the first time he had ever done something positive for her, all thanks to whoever threatened and made him have a change of heart.
"Good luck." He left to deal with the guard.
Nadia sneaked out into the night. Her heart raced as she discreetly headed to the back fence, but just as she leaped over the fence, she collided with a shifter guard who had been patrolling the perimeter.
"Where do you think you are going?" The guard roared.
